Preface
- S&H 18:-5--4 And
they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.--Paul.
- Gal 5:24 And
they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and
lusts.
- S&H 18:-3--2
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel.--Paul.
- 1Co 1:17 For
Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom
of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1. Prayer
2. Atonement and Eucharist
- S&H 20:27
St. Paul wrote, "Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set
before us;" that is, let us put aside material self and sense, and seek
the divine Principle and Science of all healing.
- * Heb 12:1 Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let
us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and
let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
- S&H 31:22
For what says Paul? "As often as ye eat this bread, and drink
this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come."
- 1Co 11:26 For
as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's
death till he come.
- S&H 39:18-22
"Now," cried the apostle, "is the accepted time;
behold, now is the day of salvation,"--meaning, not that now men
must prepare for a future-world salvation, or safety, but that now is the
time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and in life.
- 2Co 6:2 (For
he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation
have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is
the day of salvation.)
- S&H 45:10-13
Paul writes: "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled
to God by the [seeming] death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we
shall be saved by his life."
- Rom 5:10 For
if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his
Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Spiritualism
- S&H 79:17-18 The
The Apostle Paul bade men have the Mind that was in the Christ.
- Phi 2:5 Let
this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
- S&H 93:7 "Behold,
now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,"
said Paul.
- 2Co 6:2 (For
he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation
have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is
the day of salvation.)
- S&H 95:5-6
Paul said, "To be spiritually minded is life."
- Rom 8:6 For
to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace.
- S&H 99:5-9
"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling," says the
apostle, and he straightway adds: "for it is God which worketh in
you both to will and to do of His good pleasure" (Philippians ii. 12,
13).
- Phi 2:12,13
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only,
but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of
his good pleasure.
5. Animal Magnetism Unmasked
- S&H 103:2-5 (to
1st .) The Apostle Paul refers to the personification of evil as
"the god of this world," and further defines it as dishonesty and
craftiness.
- 2Co 4:4 In whom
the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not,
lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God,
should shine unto them.
- 2Co 4:2 But
have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness,
nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth
commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
- S&H 106:15-29
Let this age, which sits in judgment on Christian Science, sanction only such
methods as are demonstrable in Truth and known by their fruit, and classify
all others as did St. Paul in his great epistle to the Galatians, when
he wrote as follows: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which
are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft,
hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings,
murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like: of the which I tell you before,
as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall
not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against
such there is no law."
- Gal 5:19-23
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,
wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings,
and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in
time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom
of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is
no law.
6. Science Theology, Medicine
- S&H 107:-4--2
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not
after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but
by the revelation of Jesus Christ.--Paul.
- Gal 1:11-12
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is
not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it,
but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- S&H 108:3-4
According to St. Paul, it was "the gift of the grace of God given
unto me by the effectual working of His power."
- * Eph 3:7 Whereof
I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto
me by the effectual working of his power.
- S&H 151:24-26
The human mind is opposed to God and must be put off, as St. Paul declares.
- * Eph 4:22 That
ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt
according to the deceitful lusts;
- * Col 3:8,9
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy
communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye
have put off the old man with his deeds;
- S&H 164:25
"When this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal
shall have put on immortality [divine Science], then shall be brought to pass
the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory" (St.
Paul).
- 1Co 15:54 So
when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall
have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is
written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
7. Physiology
- S&H 172:18
On the contrary, man is the image and likeness of Spirit; and the belief that
there is Soul in sense or Life in matter obtains in mortals, alias
mortal mind, to which the apostle refers when he says that we must
"put off the old man."
- * Col 3:9 Lie
not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
- S&H 200:25-27
St. Paul said: "For I determined not to know anything among you,
save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." (I Cor. ii. 2.)
- 1Co 2:2 For
I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him
crucified.
8. Footsteps of Truth
- S&H 216:25
Paul asked: "What concord hath Christ with Belial?" (2 Corinthians
vi. 15.)
- 2Co 6:15 And
what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth
with an infidel?
- S&H 216:28-30
When you say, "Man's body is material," I say with Paul:
Be "willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with
the Lord."
- 2Co 5:8 We are
confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to
be present with the Lord.
- S&H 217:6
Medical schools may inform us that the healing work of Christian Science and
Paul's peculiar Christian conversion and experience,--which prove Mind
to be scientifically distinct from matter,--are indications of unnatural mental
and bodily conditions, even of catalepsy and hysteria; yet if we turn to the
Scriptures, what do we read? Why, this: "If a man keep my saying, he
shall never see death!" and "Henceforth know we no man after the
flesh!"
- 2Co 5:16 Wherefore
henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ
after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
- S&H 223:2-3
Paul said, "Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust
of the flesh."
- Gal 5:16 This
I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the
flesh.
- S&H 227:17-19
(only) Paul said, "I was free born." All men should be free.
"Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
- Act 22:28 And
the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And
Paul said, But I was free born.
- 2Co 3:17 Now
the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
- S&H 244:7
If we were to derive all our conceptions of man from what is seen between
the cradle and the grave, happiness and goodness would have no abiding-place
in man, and the worms would rob him of the flesh; but Paul writes:
"The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from
the law of sin and death."
- Rom 8:2 For
the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the
law of sin and death.
9. Creation
- S&H 255:-5
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together
until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits
of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption,
to wit, the redemption of our body.--Paul.
- Rom 8:22,23
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together
until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits
of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the
adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
10. Science of Being
- S&H 271:31
But, as Paul says, "How shall they hear without a preacher? and
how shall they preach, except they be sent?" If sent, how shall they
preach, convert, and heal multitudes, except the people hear?
- Rom 10:14 How
then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall
they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear
without a preacher?
- S&H 288:18
As St. Paul says: "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people
of God" (of Spirit).
- * Heb 4:9 There
remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
- S&H 300:9
So far as the scientific statement as to man is understood, it can be proved
and will bring to light the true reflection of God--the real man, or the new
man (as St. Paul has it).
- * Eph 2:15 Having
abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained
in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
- * Eph 4:24 And
that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness
and true holiness.
- * Col 3:10 And
have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of
him that created him:
- S&H 303:30-15
When the evidence before the material senses yielded to spiritual sense, the
apostle declared that nothing could alienate him from God, from the sweet
sense and presence of Life and Truth. It is ignorance and false belief, based
on a material sense of things, which hide spiritual beauty and goodness. Understanding
this, Paul said: "Neither death, nor life, . . . nor things present,
nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be
able to separate us from the love of God." This is the doctrine of Christian
Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object;
that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy;
that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life
result in death. The perfect man--governed by God, his perfect Principle--is
sinless and eternal.
- Rom 8:38,39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,
nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth,
nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- S&H 321: 3
As Paul says, in his first epistle to the Corinthians, "Flesh
and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God."
- 1Co 15:50 Now
this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
- S&H 324:19-31
Paul was not at first a disciple of Jesus but a persecutor of Jesus'
followers. When the truth first appeared to him in Science, Paul was
made blind, and his blindness was felt; but spiritual light soon enabled him
to follow the example and teachings of Jesus, healing the sick and preaching
Christianity throughout Asia Minor, Greece, and even in imperial Rome. Paul
writes, "If Christ [Truth] be not risen, then is our preaching vain."
That is, if the idea of the supremacy of Spirit, which is the true conception
of being, come not to your thought, you cannot be benefited by what I say.
- 1Co 15:14 And
if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also
vain.
- S&H 325:10
In Colossians (iii. 4) Paul writes: "When Christ, who is our life,
shall appear [be manifested], then shall ye also appear [be manifested] with
him in glory." When spiritual being is understood in all its perfection,
continuity, and might, then shall man be found in God's image. The absolute
meaning of the apostolic words is this: Then shall man be found, in His likeness,
perfect as the Father, indestructible in Life, "hid with Christ in God,"--with
Truth in divine Love, where human sense hath not seen man.
- * Col 3:4 When
Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him
in glory.
- * Col 3:3 For
ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
- S&H 325:20-24
Paul had a clear sense of the demands of Truth upon mortals physically
and spiritually, when he said: "Present your bodies a living sacrifice,
holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
- Rom 12:1 I beseech
you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies
a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service.
- S&H 326:23
Saul of Tarsus beheld the way--the Christ, or Truth --only when his
uncertain sense of right yielded to a spiritual sense, which is always right.
Then the man was changed. Thought assumed a nobler outlook, and his life became
more spiritual. He learned the wrong that he had done in persecuting Christians,
whose religion he had not understood, and in humility he took the new name
of Paul. He beheld for the first time the true idea of Love, and learned
a lesson in divine Science.
- S&H 332:6
As the apostle expressed it in words which he quoted with approbation
from a classic poet: "For we are also His offspring."
- Act 17:28 For
in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own
poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
- S&H 332:15-17
As Paul says: "There is one God, and one mediator between God
and men, the man Christ Jesus."
- * 1Ti 2:5 For
there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
11. Some Objections Answered
- S&H 341:-3
But if the spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you,
He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies
by His spirit that dwelleth in you.--Paul.
- Rom 8:11 But
if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he
that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies
by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
- S&H 342:1-2
Paul alludes to "doubtful disputations."
- Rom 14:1 Him
that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
- S&H 343:6-10
Is not finite mind ignorant of God's method? This makes it doubly unfair to
impugn and misrepresent the facts, although, without this cross-bearing, one
might not be able to say with the apostle, "None of these things
move me."
- Act 20:24 But
none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself,
so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have
received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
- S&H 343:25-28
Anciently those apostles who were Jesus' students, as well as Paul
who was not one of his students, healed the sick and reformed the sinner by
their religion.
- S&H 345:26-27
The apostle says: "For if a man think himself to be something,
when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself."
- Gal 6:3 For
if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth
himself.
- S&H 346:32
Paul says: "The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh." Who is ready to admit this?
- Gal 5:17 For
the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh:
and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things
that ye would.
- S&H 349:3-6
As Paul asked of the unfaithful in ancient days, so the rabbis of the
present day ask concerning our healing and teaching, "Through breaking
the law, dishonorest thou God?"
- Rom 2:23 Thou
that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest
thou God?
12. Christian Science Practice
- S&H 369:14-15
We never read that Luke or Paul made a reality of disease in order
to discover some means of healing it.
- S&H 383:5
One says: "I take good care of my body." To do this, the pure and
exalting influence of the divine Mind on the body is requisite, and the Christian
Scientist takes the best care of his body when he leaves it most out of his
thought, and, like the Apostle Paul, is "willing rather to be
absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
- 2Co 5:8 We are
confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to
be present with the Lord.
- S&H 442:25-28
St. Paul says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling:"
Jesus said, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure
to give you the kingdom."
- Phi 2:12 Wherefore,
my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now
much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13. Teaching Christian Science
- S&H 443:20-22
Thus such invalids may learn the value of the apostolic precept: "Reprove,
rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."
- * 2Ti 4:2 Preach
the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with
all longsuffering and doctrine.
- S&H 451:2-7
Christian Scientists must live under the constant pressure of the apostolic
command to come out from the material world and be separate. They must renounce
aggression, oppression and the pride of power. Christianity, with the crown
of Love upon her brow, must be their queen of life.
- 2Co 6:17 Wherefore
come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch
not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
- S&H 459:3-7
Paul and John had a clear apprehension that, as mortal man achieves
no worldly honors except by sacrifice, so he must gain heavenly riches by
forsaking all worldliness.
14. Recapitulation
- S&H 478:27
St. Paul said, "But when it pleased God, who separated me from
my mother's womb, and called me by His grace, . . . I conferred not with flesh
and blood."
- Gal 1:16 To
reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately
I conferred not with flesh and blood:
- S&H 479:29-32
Paul says: "For the invisible things of Him, from the creation
of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made."
- Rom 1:20 For
the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and
Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
15. Genesis
- S&H 514:26-28
Understanding the control which Love held over all, Daniel felt safe in the
lions' den, and Paul proved the viper to be harmless.
- S&H 519:17
How shall we declare Him, till, in the language of the apostle, "we
all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ"?
- * Eph 4:13 Till
we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness
of Christ:
- S&H 534:12-23
The The Son of the Virgin-mother unfolded the remedy for Adam, or error;
and the Apostle Paul explains this warfare between the idea of divine
power, which Jesus presented, and mythological material intelligence called
energy and opposed to Spirit. Paul says in his epistle to the
Romans: "The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject
to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh
cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be
that the spirit of God dwell in you."
- Rom 8:7-9 (to 1st
.) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject
to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh
cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so
be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
- S&H 539:24
Paul asked: "What communion hath light with darkness? And what
concord hath Christ with Belial?"
- 2Co 6:15 And
what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth
with an infidel?
16. The Apocalypse
- S&H 560:22-30
Abuse of the motives and religion of St. Paul hid from view the apostle's
character, which made him equal to his great mission. Persecution of all who
have spoken something new and better of God has not only obscured the light
of the ages, but has been fatal to the persecutors. Why? Because it has hid
from them the true idea which has been presented. To misunderstand Paul,
was to be ignorant of the divine idea he taught.
- S&H 563:27-30
The serpentine form stands for subtlety, winding its way amidst all evil,
but doing this in the name of good. Its sting is spoken of by Paul,
when he refers to "spiritual wickedness in high places."
- * Eph 6:12 For
we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places.
17. Glossary
- S&H 596:7
Paul saw in Athens an altar dedicated "to the unknown God."
Referring to it, he said to the Athenians: "Whom therefore ye ignorantly
worship, Him declare I unto you." (Acts xvii. 23.)
- * Act 17:23
For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this
inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him
declare I unto you.
18. Fruitage
- S&H 600:-5--3

every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.--Paul.

SECT. 24. "Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's"
(St. Paul).
- 1Co 6:20 For
ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your
spirit, which are God's.
* Notes
on some verses that Mrs. Eddy attributes to Paul
- Acts: The Gospel
of Luke and the Book of Acts were written as a single work, possibly in two
separate volumes. Though traditionally attributed to "Luke, the beloved
physician" (Col 4:14), who was believed to be a companion of Paul, there
is uncertainty as to who actually wrote these volumes. Though some modern
theologians believe that Luke and Acts were written by Luke, many reputable
biblical authorities believe that these two volumes were written by a later
Christian sometime between 85 and 95 A.D.
- Ephesians: Though
Paul's authorship was generally assumed in Mrs. Eddy's day and is still assumed
by some modern theologians, many reputable biblical authorities today believe
that Ephesians was written pseudonymously by a disciple of Paul sometime before
90 A.D.
- Colossians: Though
Paul's authorship was generally assumed in Mrs. Eddy's day and is still assumed
by some modern theologians, many reputable biblical authorities today believe
that Colossians was written pseudonymously by a disciple of Paul sometime
before 80 A.D.
- 1 and 2 Timothy:
Though Paul's authorship was generally assumed in Mrs. Eddy's day and is still
assumed by some modern theologians, many reputable biblical authorities today
believe that 1 and 2 Timothy were written pseudonymously by a later Christian
sometime around 115 A.D.
- Hebrews: Other
than 1 John, Hebrews is the only New Testament letter that does not indicate
the intended author's name in its greeting. The author of Hebrews is unknown.
Tradtionally Hebrews had been believed to have been written by Paul, but the
original text of Hebrews does not ascribe an author. Virtually no credible
biblical authorities believe that Paul wrote Hebrews. In S&H 279:3,
Mrs. Eddy refers to the author of Hebrews as simply, "A New Testament
writer." She also allows for anonymity in her references to Hebrews in
S&H 112:16, S&H 313:1, S&H 468:18-22, Mis
26:25, and Un 23:9. By Mrs. Eddy's day it was generally accepted that
Paul was not the author of Hebrews, and she very likely was aware of that.
When she referred to a quotation as being from "Hebrews" or "the
Book of Hebrews," she never mentioned Paul by name as its author.
