- omit KJV wording: without a cause <1500>
- (based on the
original text's correction of KJV's Greek text)
- "Without
a cause" is not found in any modern English versions, i.e., not found
in those versions that are translated from the current representations of
the original texts. (The NKJV is not such a modern translation. It
is still totally dependent upon the KJV and the same questionable
Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated.) That "without
a cause" was not in the original text of Matthew is attested by a number
of very early manuscripts. In the Textual Commentary of the Greek New
Testament, Second Edition (NY: United Bible Societies, 1994, page 11),
Bruce Metzger writes regarding this verse: "Although the reading with
eike is widespread from the second century onwards, it is
much more likely that the word was added by copyists in order to soften
the rigor of the precept, that omitted as unnecessary."

6:13 - omit KJV working: For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. - (based on the
original text's correction of KJV's Greek text)
-
In
the Textual Commentary of the Greek New Testament, Second Edition
(NY: United Bible Societies, 1994, page 13-14), Bruce Metzger writes:
The
ascription ["a form of prayer ascribing praise to God spoken by a
minister, usually after a sermon" (Webster's Third)] at the
close of the Lord's Prayer occurs in several forms... The absence of any
ascription in early and important [ancient manuscripts], as well as early
patristic commentaries on the Lord's Prayer... suggests that an ascription,
usuallly in a threefold form, was composed (perhaps on the basis of 1
Chr 29:11-13) in order to adapt the Prayer for liturgical use in the early
church.
- KJV
wording:
- "And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: [For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.]"
- Corrected
wording that appears in other Bible versions owned and used by Mary Baker
Eddy
- RV,
ASV, Moulton: "And bring us not into temptation, but deliver
us from the evil one." [ ]
- Rotherham,
Weymouth: "And bring us not into temptation, But rescue us from
the evil one." [ ]
- The
same corrected wording that appears in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy
- S&H:
"There is indeed some doubt among Bible scholars, whether the
last line is not an addition to the prayer by a later copyist; but
this does not affect the meaning of the prayer itself. In the phrase,
"Deliver us from evil," the original properly reads, "Deliver
us from the evil one." (S&H 16:11)
