When Mrs. Eddy wrote this, she made use of a Bible version other than the
KJV.
- Joh

- KJV:
"All things were made by him..."

Moulton: "All things were made through him."

"Through him all things came into being through Him..."
- Weymouth:
"All things came into being through Him..."
- S&H:
"In the Gospel of John, it is declared that all things were made
through the Word of God, 'and that without Him [the logos,
or word] was not anything made that was made." (S&H 525:17-20)
- Greek:
panta <3956> di <1223> auto <846> egeneto
<1096>
- [Here
the Greek word dia <1223> was shortened to di, because
it preceded the Greek word auto, which begins with an a
(alpha). It rolls off the tongue more smoothly to say di auto
than to say dia auto. Many languages, ancient and modern, follow
similar practices.]

Christian Healer (von Fettweis & Warneck), page 108 ("For more
… Glossary")
- Regarding Mrs. Eddy's
adding a "Glossary" chapter, Robert Peel (Mary
Baker Eddy: The Years of Trial, page 346, footnote 50) wrote:
This may have been
suggested to her initially by a Dictionary of Correspondences (Boston,
1847) drawn from Swedenborg's writings, but most of the alleged resemblances
between that book and Mrs. Eddy's "Glossary" break down under
examination. (See Peel, Discovery, p. 348 f., note 52.) The most
persuasive argument that she she was familiar with the Dictionary of
Correspondences is the unusual inclusion of the preposition "IN"
as a term for metaphysical definition in both books, thought the two definitions
are entirely different.
- In his Mary Baker
Eddy: The Years of Discovery, page 207, Peel refers to Mrs. Eddy's use
of "Swedenborgian terms" in an early manuscript on Genesis. In
his footnote, Peel adds (pages 348-349 footnote 52):
Swedenborgian terms
were very much in the air. In the Biblitheca Sacra for October,
1928, Hermann S. Ficke attempted to establish Mrs. Eddy's direct indebtedness
to a Dictionary of Correspondences drawn from Swedenbor'g writings
(Boston, 1847). This tends to break down under close examination. For
instance, Ficke puts the definition of "Ark" from the Glossary
of Science and Heatlh with Key to the Scriptures against the definition
from the Dictionary of Correspondences...
It is always a tricky
matter to posit a direct cause-and-effect relationship on superficial
verbal correspondences. In this case it seems safe to say only that Swedenborg
and Mrs. Eddy were both interested in the "spiritual" rather
than the literal interpretation of Scripture.

of Correspondences, see http://www.bibletexts.com/bibliogr/08dic.htm#swedenborg.

Eddy did borrow from other authors, see Peel's Mary Baker Eddy: The Years
of Authority, pages 106-108 and pages 407-410 footnotes 55-58.

S&H 589:8 [Japhet]
- S&H
589:8-11 - Japhet
- The spelling Japhet
is different from the standard spelling Japheth. Noah's son's name
is consistently spelled Japheth in the current KJV, in other
modern translations that Mrs. Eddy owned, and in all current modern translations.
- A possible
explanation: The closest biblical spelling to Mrs. Eddy's spelling
in the "Glossary" is in the original 1611 KJV, where
the spelling Iaphet is found. In virtually all cases where
the letter j (or J) is used in the current KJV,
the original KJV used the letter i (or I) --
as in Iesus, Iohn, and Bariesus. (The German
J is pronounced like an English Y; thus, the Hebrew word that the
Germanized Jehovah represents is more correctly pronounced
in English Yahweh.) Even in the Greek Septuagint text
of Genesis, Noah's son's name would be transliterated Iapheth,
and pronounced something like Yah-feth. (The Hebrew name is
pronounced Yeh-feth.) Earlier versions of the KJV, prior
to the Dr. Benjamin Blayney's definitive
1769 revision of the KJV, may
have already changed the i to a j while also keeping
the concluding t instead of th; thus, earlier versions
of the KJV may have spelled Noah's son's name as Japhet.
Mrs. Eddy may have used a pre-1769 version of the KJV that
had already changed the initial i to j, or she herself
may have modified the original 1611 KJV's spelling to arrive
at the spelling Japhet.
- Another possible
explanation: It also is possible that Mrs. Eddy borrowed the spelling
from a source that she may have used for some of her glossary terms.
(See Robert Peel's Mary Baker Eddy [MBE]: The Years
of Discovery, pages 222-223, pages 348-349 footnote 50; Peel's
MBE: The Years of Trial, page 346 footnote 50, page 370 footnote
1; and Peel's MBE: The Years of Authority, pages 106-108 and
pages 407-410 footnotes 55-58.)
- A much less
likely explanation: Adam Clarke's wrote in his 1830 commentary
of the Bible (Clarke's Commentary, Volume I, Nashville Press,
Abingdon Press, no date, page 84): "Verse 2... Japheth is supposed
to be the same with the Japetus of the Greeks, from whom, in
an extremely remote antiquity, that people were supposed to have derived
their origin." This apparently was a belief that was held by
some writers in 1830 and after. Some in Mrs. Eddy's day also may have
so believed and may have changed the spelling to more closely reflect
the association with the name Japetus, though this is highly
speculative.
- Conclusion:
I currently have no certainty as to the derivation of Mrs. Eddy's
spelling Japhet. I have already already searched the non-KJV
Bibles that she used. Mrs. Eddy certainly was very familiar with Smith's
dictionary. In my 1884 edition of Smith's dictionary, the article
on Japheth is titled "Japheth," but in 5 of the 14 references
to Japheth in the Smith's dictionary definitions, the spelling is
"Japhet." It is possible that the edition that Mrs. Eddy
began using in 1868 had Japhet throughout and that subsequent editions,
including the 1884 edition, of the book including the 1884 edition,
corrected part but not all of the Japhet spellings in the text.
