S&H
477:20 - Identity and Soul
-
In exploring this paragraph's answer to the question, "What are
body and Soul?" we may be helped by recognizing that nephesh,
the Old Testament Hebrew word nephesh
and New Testament
Greek word psuche
translated in the Bible as soul are also translated as self;
life, and person. In common versions of the Old Testament,
the phrases, "my soul" and "our soul," really means
-- and modern translations often translate them as -- I, me,
we, or us.
-
Though
neither the Old Testament nor the New Testament directly states that
nephesh
or psuche is God, in Exo 3:14 God identifies himself as
the "I AM," who declares, "I
AM THAT I AM" or "I AM WHO I AM." The Greek Septuagint,
the early Christians' Greek Old Testament, read, Ego eimi
ho on, translatable into English as, "I am the Being."
-
The
phrase, Ego eimi or I AM, has great significance in the Gospel
of John. Rather than Christ Jesus being just another personal self,
independent of God, Christ was/is the image of God, the I
AM, his/the divine Soul, the true basis for
Christ Jesus' selfhood. When Christ Jesus spoke or acted, he did so
because God, spoke or acted. That Christ Jesus recognized God as his/the
divine Soul, the I AM, is arguably
the significance of Jesus' "I am" sayings in the Gospel of
John.

also Jesus' declaration, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
(Joh 14:7,12) Since Christ Jesus is described as "the image of
the invisible God" (Col 1:15) and as "the reflection of
God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being" (Heb 1:3).
Jesus himself said, "If you know me, you will know my Father
also,"and "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father"
(Joh 12:9). We may then conclude that by truly seeing Jesus as "the
life," we are seeing God, the Father, as Life.

496:32-1 - the original 1879 tenets of Christian Science (per Norman Beasley's
The Cross and the Crown: The History of Christian Science, Boston:
Little, Brown and Company, 1952, page 66)
First, -- As Adherents
of Truth, we take the Scriptures for our guide to Life.
Second, -- We acknowledge
one Father, Son and Holy Ghost -- one God, the brotherhood of man, and
Divine Science. And the forgiveness of sin, which is the destruction of
sin. And the atonement of Christ, which is the efficacy of Truth and Love.
And the way of salvation marked out by Jesus healing the sick, casting
out devils (evils), and raising the dead -- uplifting a dead faith into
Life and Love.
Third, -- We promise
to love one another, and to work, watch and pray; to strive against sin,
and to keep the Ten Commanments; to deal justly, love mercy, walk humbly;
and inasmuch as we are enabled by Truth, to cast out evil, and heal the
sick.
