313:1 - The term Christ Jesus, or Jesus the Christ (to give the full and
proper translation of the Greek)
- The
phrases used in the New Testament Greek are Christos Iesous
(Christ Jesus, used 91 times) and Iesous Christos (Jesus Christ,
used 137 times). In various places in the New Testament, the Greek text
appears in either order, and both words always use the same case. For example,
when either combination is used as the subject of the sentence, both words
always are nominative, singular, masculine.

Ego
is the Greek word <Strong's #1473, first person singular nominative>
that is translated in English as "I." In the Greek New
Testament, particularly in John, we find the phrase, ego
eimi, which means in English, "I am" or "I
have being," for example Joh 14:6. In Exo 3:14 of the early
Christians' Bible (the Greek Septuagint version of the
Old Testament), we find the phrase, ego eimi ho on,
which means in English, "I am the being." The KJV
of that passage, translated from the Hebrew text, is "I AM
THAT I AM."
-
See
an original article explaining the background, use, and significance
of the phrase I AM in the early Christian's Bible (the Greek Septuagint)
and in the Gospel of John, including all of Jesus' "I am"
sayings, at http://www.bibletexts.com/terms/i-am.htm.

Jehovah (Yahweh) <Strong's Hebrew #3068>
- S&H
320:8-23
- Gen
6:3
- KJV
wording:
- "And
the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man,
for that he also is flesh"
- KJV
wording <Strong's
#> - needing clarification/correction in its translation:
- "And the
LORD <03068> said <0559>, My spirit <07307> shall
not always <05769> strive <01777>
with man <0120>, for that he also <07683> [is]
flesh <01320>:"
- Clarified/corrected
wording that appears in other Bible versions owned and used by Mary
Baker Eddy
- Smith's
Bible Dictionary: "And Jehovah
said, My spirit shall not forever rule [or be humbled]
in men, seeing that they are [or, in their error they are] but
flesh."
- Rotherham:
"And Yahweh said -- My spirit shall not rule
in man to times age-abiding, for that [[he also]] is flesh --..."
- The
same clarified/corrected wording that appears in the writings of Mary
Baker Eddy
- S&H:
In Smith's Bible Dictionary it is said: "The spiritual interpretation
of Scripture must rest upon both the literal and moral;" and
in the learned article on Noah in the same work, the familiar text,
Genesis vi. 3, "And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always
strive with man, for that he also is flesh," is quoted as follows,
from the original Hebrew: "And Jehovah said, My spirit shall
not forever rule [or be humbled] in men, seeing
that they are [or, in their error they are] but flesh." Here
the original text declares plainly the spiritual fact of being,
even man's eternal and harmonious existence as image, idea, instead
of matter (however transcendental such a thought appears), and avers
that this fact is not forever to be humbled by the belief that man
is flesh and matter, for according to that error man is mortal.
(S&H 320:8)

translations of the Bible, see http://www.bibletexts.com/bl-ver.htm#3.

Hebrew Old Testament word from which the KJV word "strive"
is translated (upon which the above correction/clarification is based)
- Some modern
versions
- Anchor Bible
- "Then Yahweh said, "My spirit shall not shield
man forever, since he is but flesh..."
- NAB
- "Then the Lord said: "My spirit shall not remain
in man forever, since he is but flesh..."
- NRSV
- "Then the Lord said, My spirit shall not abide in
mortals forever, for they are flesh;..."
- Old Testament
Library - "Then the Lord said, "My spirit shall not
abide in man for ever, for he is flesh..."
- REB
- "But the Lord said, 'My spirit will not remain in
a human being for ever; because he is mortal flesh..."
- TEV:
The Wickedness of Mankind - Gen 6:1 When the human race had
spread all over the world, and daughters were being born, 2 some
of the heavenly beings saw that these young women were beautiful,
so they took the ones they liked. 3 Then the Lord said, I
will not allow people to live for ever; they are mortal. From
now on they will live no longer than a hundred and twenty years.
4 In those days, and even later, there were giants on the earth
who were descendants of human women and the heavenly beings. They
were the great heroes and famous men of long ago.
- Some commentary
- Anchor Bible:
Genesis (by E.A. Speiser, Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1964,
page 44): "3. shield. The traditional "abide in"
is a guess lacking any linguistic support..."
- A Handbook
on Genesis (by William D. Reyburn and Euan McG. Fry, NY: United
Bible Societies, 1997, page 144): "Shall not abide translates
a word that occurs nowhere else in the Old Testament, and so its
meaning is somewhat uncertain. "Abide" and "remain"
have been used traditionally and seem to fit the context well.

Mary Baker Eddy's
references to Mary Magdalene - It is significant to note that Mrs.
Eddy does not say that this woman is Mary Magdalene -- only that
she has since been called "Mary Magdalene." She was simply
referring to the unnamed woman in Luk 7:36-50 as "Mary Magdalene,"
consistent with the prevalent tradition still current in Mrs. Eddy's time.
As pointed out in BibleTexts.com's book review of Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures [book
review], "Mary
Baker Eddy incurred the wrath of many ecclesiastics of her day, not only
for being a woman who was a leading religious figure but also for
her use of modern translations and her use of some of the findings of
modern biblical criticism."
Mrs. Eddy's theology
should be judged independently of the biblical and other history that she
describes. Her endeavor was to be as reliably accurate as possible. Though
undoubtedly knowing that her own writings would be held under the microscope
of judgment by her own words, she did not hesitate to state (S&H
24:4):
Acquaintance with
the original texts, and willingness to give up human beliefs (established
by hierarchies, and instigated sometimes by the worst passions of men),
open the way for Christian Science to be understood, and make the Bible
the chart of life, where the buoys and healing currents of Truth are pointed
out.

Bible dictionaries
descriptions of Mary Magdalene - In the 1929 edition of Dictionary
of the Bible (edited by James Hastings, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons,
1909, page 589), which was first published in 1909, only one year prior
to Mrs. Eddy's passing, Charles Grierson wrote in his article on Mary
Magdalene:
An unfortunate tradition
identifies her [Mary Magdalene] with the unnamed sinful woman who anointed
our Lord (Lk 7:37); and she has been thus regarded as the typical reformed
'fallen woman.' But St. Luke, though he placed them consecutively in his
narrative, did not identify them; and as possession did not necessarily
presuppose moral failing in the victim's character, we need not do so.
In more recent times,
in The Oxford Companion to the Bible (edited by Bruce M. Metzger
and Michael D. Coogan, NY: Oxford University Press, 1993, page 499), J.
Andrew Overman wrote in his article on Mary Magdalene:
Contrary to subsequent
Christian interpretation, reflected in popular belief and recent films,
there is no evidence from the Gospels that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute
or for that later identification of Mary Magdalene with the women who
anoint Jesus' feet (luke 7:36-50; Matt. 26:6-13 par.) or with Mary of
Bethany (Luke 10.38; John 11.1-2). In Luke 8.2 it is said that Mary Magdalene
was healed of seven evil spirits by Jesus. But this is in the context
of a list of women who were followers of Jesus, who had also been healed,
and who supplied the material support for his mission.
For a more detailed
description of the history of the misrepresentation of the "sinner"
woman in Luk 7:37-50 as Mary Magdalene, which seems to have originated with
St. Jerome (342-420 A.D.), see Mary Magdalene and Many Others: Women
who followed Jesus, by Carla Ricci (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1991,
pages 30-40).

- "Principle and Practice"
by Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science Sentinel, Sept. 1, 1917,
Volume 20, page 10, paragraph 3), also online in its entirety at http://www.bibletexts.com/articles/mbe-principle-and-practice.htm.
The sick, like
drowning men, catch at whatever drifts toward them. The sick are told
by a faith-Scientist, "I can heal you, for God is all, and you
are well, since God creates neither sin, sickness, nor death."
Such statements result in the sick either being healed by their faith
in what you tell them -- which heals only as a drug would heal, through
belief -- or in no effect whatever. If the faith healer succeeds in
securing (kindling) the belief of the patient in his own recovery,
the practitioner will have performed a faith-cure which he mistakenly
pronounces Christian Science.

390: - divine Science
-
Mary Baker. Eddy considered the term divine Science or Science
(and sometimes Christian Science) as referring to the biblical
terms: the Holy Ghost (or the Holy Spirit) and the
Comforter (or the Advocate, the Counselor, the
Paraclete, the Defense Attorney), which John 14:17 described
as "the Spirit of truth." To explore
the biblical basis for this, see http://www.bibletexts.com/terms/comforter.htm.
