Oxford Companion to the Bible - edited by Bruce M. Metzger and Michael D. Coogan (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1993). This is an excellent one-volume Bible dictionary in the English language. Though it does not cover nearly as many subjects as does the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary, its treatment of some subject is even more thorough. It, too, is up-to-date, well-researched, honest, thorough, and respresents well the conclusions of today's top scholars.
