Question/insight #7: "The more I think about it, the more I wonder what is motivating you to do all this work for us, the unknown audience?" (12/20/97)
Response #7:
Well, each week I myself greatly value the Bible Lesson that is found in the Christian Science Quarterly. I study the Bible passages very thoroughly and very honestly, so that I can get as close as possible to understanding the original texts of those Bible texts. I also utilize the Quarterly's correlative passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. Then I let the Word lead me. I don't just try to find the words that make me feel good about the way that I am thinking or acting. I actually study the Bible Lesson hoping that it will give me a good swift kick in the pants -- to actually change or at least refine my thinking and actions. The Bible Lesson really helps me practice better what Jesus taught, which is very important to me. That is my prime motivation.
Having done all that preparation for myself, years ago I began sharing the results with my family (my wife and four kids, and our parents) and then with my Sunday School class. Then others learned of it and had me email it to them. So, in September of 1996, I launched the BibleTexts Web site. It has evolved quite a bit since then, but with the same commitment to exploring the original texts and an authentic understanding and practice of primitive Christianity.
