Zacchaeus

Harper’s Bible Dictionary

edited by Paul J. Achtemier (San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1985)

You are strongly recommended to add to your library the excellent revised edition of Harper's Bible Dictionary titled, The Harper Collins Bible Dictionary, Revised Edition [book review], edited by Paul J. Achtemeier, with the Society of Biblical Literature (NY: Harper Collins, 1996). It is currently the best one-volume Bible dictionary in English, and it is available at Border's Books, Christian Science Reading Rooms, http://www.borders.com, or http://www.christianbook.com.

Zacchaeus.

1 An officer in Judas Maccabeus’ army (2 Macc. 10:19).

2 A wealthy tax collector in Jericho (Luke 19:1-10), whose actions belied the meaning of his name (‘pure’) and warranted the label ‘sinner’ (19:7). Learning that Jesus was to pass by, he, being ‘small of stature,’ climbed a tree for a better view. Surprisingly, Jesus summoned him and ate with him. Zacchaeus’ promise to contribute to the poor and restore fourfold those wrongfully treated stands in sharp contrast to the response of the rich ruler (Luke 18:18-25).
