Horeb. A name for Sinai, the mountain at which the Israelites under Moses encamped for a long time. Ex. 3:1; Deut. 1:2; 5:2; 2 Chron. 5:10; Ps. 106:19.

Horeb, Mount, the name for Mt. Sinai used by the E and D writers of the Pentateuch, probably stemming from different tribal traditions. Here Moses was called (Exod. 3:1-12) and here he obtained water from the rock (Exod. 17:6-7). Here the Israelites made a covenant with Yahweh (Deut. 5:2), and from there they set out for Kadesh-barnea and Canaan (Deut. 1:19). Elijah fled to Horeb because of Jezebel’s wrath. Since early Christian times Mt. Horeb/Sinai has been identified with modern Jebel Musa in southern Sinai, but there are no certain geographical data for this identity.
