Which English Bible version is the best?

Of the English language Bible versions primarily used by the BibleTexts.com website, the NRSV gives the best word-for-word representation of the wording of original texts, and the TEV gives the best phrase-by-phrase representation of the originally intended meaning of original texts. Both the NRSV and the TEV are based upon the same highly reliable, definitive Hebrew and Greek biblical texts that are edited and published by the United Bible Societies.

Wherever there are substantial differences between the KJV and the NRSV, the NRSV should be considered as more accurately representing the original texts, because the NRSV is translated from much more accurate Hebrew and Greek texts, and the NRSV translation team was very careful to ensure that the NRSV would be theologically objective. In the KJV most of the substantive errors are due to the faulty Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated. (See S&H 139:15.) You can explore verse-by-verse explanations of most of those Hebrew and Greek text-based errors by browsing the BibleTexts Online Bible Commentary at http://www.bibletexts.com/bt.htm. You can easily browse the BibleTexts' textual commentaries on each book of the Bible by clicking on the bulleted footnotes immediately below the TEV translation.

You can also find verse-by-verse explanations of many of the text-based errors in the following two books: Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible, by Emanuel Tov (Minneapolis, MN: Augsburg Fortress Press, 1992) and A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, Second Edition, by Bruce M. Metzger (New York: United Bible Societies, 1994). Many other English Bible translations are listed and recommended in the BibleTexts' bibliography at http://www.bibletexts.com/bibliogr/01bib-e.htm, which also notes the English language Bibles owned and used by Mary Baker Eddy. <GT> Romans 6

KJV w/Strong# - {14} ...sin <266> shall not have dominion <2961> over you: for ye are not under <5259> the law <3551>, but under <5259> grace <5485>.

NRSV - 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

TEV - "Dead to Sin but Alive in Union with Christ" - 12 Sin must no longer rule in your mortal bodies, so that you obey the desires of your natural self. 13 Nor must you surrender any part of yourselves to sin to be used for wicked purposes. Instead, give yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life, and surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes. 14 Sin must not be your master; for you do not live under law but under God's grace.

<RR1> Romans 6

KJV w/Strong# - {16} Know <1492> ye not, that to whom <3739> ye yield <3936> yourselves <1438> servants <1401> to obey <5218>, his servants <1401> ye are to whom <3739> ye obey <5219>; whether <2273> of sin <266> unto death <2288>, or <2228> of obedience <5218> unto righteousness <1343>? {17} But God <2316> be thanked <5485>, that ye were the servants <1401> of sin <266>, but ye have obeyed <5219> from the heart <2588> that form <5179> of doctrine <1322> which <3739> was delivered <3860> you. {18} Being then <1161> made <1659> free <1659> from sin <266>, ye became <1402> the servants <1402> of righteousness <1343>.

{20} For when <3753> ye were the servants <1401> of sin <266>, ye were free <1658> from righteousness <1343>.

{22} But now <3570> being made <1659> free <1659> from sin <266>, and become <1402> servants <1402> to God <2316>, ye have <2192> your <5216> fruit <2590> unto holiness <38>, and the end <5056> everlasting <166> life <2222>.

NRSV - 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life.

TEV - "Slaves of Righteousness" - 15 What, then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law but under God's grace? By no means! 16 Surely you know that when you surrender yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are in fact the slaves of the master you obey -- either of sin, which results in death, or of obedience, which results in being put right with God. 17 But thanks be to God! For though at one time you were slaves to sin, you have obeyed with all your heart the truths found in the teaching you received. 18 You were set free from sin and became the slaves of righteousness. 19 (I use everyday language because of the weakness of your natural selves.) At one time you surrendered yourselves entirely as slaves to impurity and wickedness for wicked purposes. In the same way you must now surrender yourselves entirely as slaves of righteousness for holy purposes. 20 When you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. 21 What did you gain from doing the things that you are now ashamed of? The result of those things is death! 22 But now you have been set free from sin and are the slaves of God. Your gain is a life fully dedicated to him, and the result is eternal life. 23 For sin pays its wage -- death; but God's free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.

<RR2> Romans 16

KJV w/Strong# - {25} Now <1161> to him that is of power <1410> to stablish <4741> you according <2596> to my gospel <2098>, and the preaching <2782> of Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>, according <2596> to the revelation <602> of the mystery <3466>, which was kept secret <4601> since the world <166> began, {26} But now <3568> is made <5319> manifest <5319>, and by the scriptures <1124> of the prophets <4397>, according <2596> to the commandment <2003> of the everlasting <166> God <2316>, made <1107> known <1107> to all <3956> nations <1484> for the obedience <5218> of faith <4102>: {27} To God <2316> only <3441> wise <4680>, [be] glory <1391> through <1223> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> for ever <165>...

NRSV - 25 Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith -- 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.

TEV - "Concluding Prayer of Praise" - 25 Let us give glory to God! He is able to make you stand firm in your faith, according to the Good News I preach about Jesus Christ and according to the revelation of the secret truth which was hidden for long ages in the past. 26 Now, however, that truth has been brought out into the open through the writings of the prophets; and by the command of the eternal God it is made known to all nations, so that all may believe and obey. 27 To the only God, who alone is all-wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever! Amen.

SECTION 1

<B1> Romans 15

KJV w/Strong# - For whatsoever <3745> things were written <4270> aforetime <4270> were written <4270> for our <2251> learning <1319>, that we through <1223> patience <5281> and comfort <3874> of the scriptures <1124> might have <2192> hope <1680>.

NRSV - 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.

TEV - "Please Others, Not Yourselves" - 1 We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens. We should not please ourselves. 2 Instead, we should all please our brothers for their own good, in order to build them up in the faith. 3 For Christ did not please himself. Instead, as the scripture says, "The insults which are hurled at you have fallen on me." 4 Everything written in the Scriptures was written to teach us, in order that we might have hope through the patience and encouragement which the Scriptures give us. 5 And may God, the source of patience and encouragement, enable you to have the same point of view among yourselves by following the example of Christ Jesus, 6 so that all of you together may praise with one voice the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

<B2> Genesis 1

KJV w/Strong# - {1} In the beginning <07225> God <0430> created <01254> the heaven <08064> and the earth <0776>. {2} And the earth <0776> was without <08414> form <08414>, and void <0922>; and darkness <02822> [was] upon the face <06440> of the deep <08415>. And the Spirit <07307> of God <0430> moved <07363> upon the face <06440> of the waters <04325>. {3} And God <0430> said <0559>, Let there be light <0216>: and there was light <0216>.

{26} And God <0430> said <0559>, Let us make <06213> man <0120> in our image <06754>, after our likeness <01823>: and let them have dominion <07287> over the fish <01710> of the sea <03220>, and over the fowl <05775> of the air <08064>, and over the cattle <0929>, and over all <03605> the earth <0776>, and over every <03605> creeping <07431> thing that creepeth <07430> upon the earth <0776>. {27} So God <0430> created <01254> man <0120> in his [own] image <06754>, in the image <06754> of God <0430> created <01254> he him; male <02145> and female <05347> created <01254> he them.

{31} And God <0430> saw <07200> every <03605> thing that he had made <06213>, and, behold <02009>, [it was] very <03966> good <02896>...

NRSV - 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

TEV - "The Story of Creation"- 1 In the beginning, when God created the universe, 2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water. 3 Then God commanded, "Let there be light" -- and light appeared. 4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness, 5 and he named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening passed and morning came -- that was the first day.

26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small." 27 So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, 28 blessed them, and said, "Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. 29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food" -- and it was done. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came -- that was the sixth day.

<B3> Genesis 2

KJV w/Strong# - {1} Thus the heavens <08064> and the earth <0776> were finished <03615>, and all <03605> the host <06635> of them.

{6} But there went <05927> up a mist <0108> from the earth <0776>, and watered <08248> the whole face <06440> of the ground <0127>. {7} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> formed <03335> man <0120> [of] the dust <06083> of the ground <0127>, and breathed <05301> into his nostrils <0639> the breath <05397> of life <02416>; and man <0120> became <01961> a living <02416> soul <05315>.

NRSV - 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude.

6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground -- 7 then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.

TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 1 And so the whole universe was completed. 2 By the seventh day God finished what he had been doing and stopped working. 3 He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day, because by that day he had completed his creation and stopped working. 4 And that is how the universe was created.

"The Garden of Eden" - 4b When the LORD God made the universe, 5 there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 6 but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground. 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.

SECTION 2

<B4> Genesis 2

KJV w/Strong# - {8} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> planted <05193> a garden <01588> eastward <06924> in Eden <05731>; and there <08033> he put <07760> the man <0120> whom <0834> he had formed <03335>. {9} And out of the ground <0127> made the LORD <03068> God <0430> to grow <06779> every <03605> tree <06086> that is pleasant <02530> to the sight <04758>, and good <02896> for food <03978>; the tree <06086> of life <02416> also in the midst <08432> of the garden <01588>, and the tree <06086> of knowledge <01847> of good <02896> and evil <07451>.

{16} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> commanded <06680> the man <0120>, saying e <06086> of the garden <01588> thou mayest freely eat <0398>: {17} But of the tree <06086> of the knowledge <01847> of good <02896> and evil <07451>, thou shalt not eat <0398> of it: for in the day <03117> that thou eatest <0398> thereof thou shalt surely die <04191>.

NRSV - 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."

TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.

15 Then the LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. 16 He told him, "You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 17 except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day."

<B5> James 1

KJV w/Strong# - {13} Let no <3367> man <3367> say <3004> when he is tempted <3985>, I am tempted <3985> of God <2316>: for God <2316> cannot <551> be tempted <551> with evil <2556>, neither <3762> tempteth <3985> he any <3762> man <3762>:

NRSV - 13 No one, when tempted, should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one.

TEV - "Testing and Tempting" - 12 Happy is the person who remains faithful under trials, because when he succeeds in passing such a test, he will receive as his reward the life which God has promised to those who love him. 13 If a person is tempted by such trials, he must not say, "This temptation comes from God." For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But a person is tempted when he is drawn away and trapped by his own evil desire. 15 Then his evil desire conceives and gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

<B6> Psalm 5

KJV w/Strong# - {4} For thou [art] not a God <0410> that hath pleasure <02655> in wickedness <07562>: neither <03808> shall evil <07451> dwell <01481> with thee.

{11} But let all <03605> those that put their trust <02620> in thee rejoice <08055>: let them ever <05769> shout <07442> for joy, because thou defendest <05526> them: let them also that love <0157> thy name <08034> be joyful <05970> in thee.

NRSV - 4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil will not sojourn with you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, so that those who love your name may exult in you.

TEV - "A Prayer for Protection" - 4 You are not a God who is pleased with wrongdoing; you allow no evil in your presence. 5 You cannot stand the sight of proud men; you hate all wicked people. 6 You destroy all liars and despise violent, deceitful men. 7 But because of your great love I can come into your house; I can worship in your holy Temple and bow down to you in reverence. 8 LORD, I have so many enemies! Lead me to do your will; make your way plain for me to follow. 9 What my enemies say can never be trusted; they only want to destroy. Their words are flattering and smooth, but full of deadly deceit. 10 Condemn and punish them, O God; may their own plots cause their ruin. Drive them out of your presence because of their many sins and their rebellion against you. 11 But all who find safety in you will rejoice; they can always sing for joy. Protect those who love you; because of you they are truly happy. 12 You bless those who obey you, LORD; your love protects them like a shield.

<B7> Psalm 119

KJV w/Strong# - {68} Thou [art] good <02896>, and doest good <02895>; teach <03925> me thy statutes <02706>.

NRSV - 68 You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.

TEV - "The Value of the Law of the LORD" - 65 You have kept your promise, LORD, and you are good to me, your servant. 66 Give me wisdom and knowledge, because I trust in your commands. 67 Before you punished me, I used to go wrong, but now I obey your word. 68 How good you are -- how kind! Teach me your commands. 69 Proud men have told lies about me, but with all my heart I obey your instructions. 70 These men have no understanding, but I find pleasure in your law. 71 My punishment was good for me, because it made me learn your commands.

SECTION 3

<B8> Genesis 2

KJV w/Strong# - {18} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> said <0559>, [It is] not good <02896> that the man <0120> should be alone <0905>; I will make <06213> him an help <05828> meet <05828> for him. {19} And out of the ground <0127> the LORD <03068> God <0430> formed <03335> every <03605> beast <02416> of the field <07704>, and every <03605> fowl <05775> of the air <08064>; and brought <0935> [them] unto Adam <0120> to see <07200> what <04100> he would call <07121> them: and whatsoever Adam <0120> called <07121> every living <02416> creature <05315>, that [was] the name <08034> thereof. {20} And Adam <0120> gave <07121> names <08034> to all <03605> cattle <0929>, and to the fowl <05775> of the air <08064>, and to every <03605> beast <02416> of the field <07704>; but for Adam <0120> there was not found <04672> an help <05828> meet <05828> for him. {21} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> caused a deep <08639> sleep <03462> to fall <05307> upon Adam <0121>, and he slept <03462>: and he took <03947> one <0259> of his ribs <06763>, and closed <05462> up the flesh <01320> instead <08478> thereof; {22} And the rib <06763>, which <0834> the LORD <03068> God <0430> had taken <03947> from man <0120>, made <01129> he a woman <0802>, and brought <0935> her unto the man <0120>. {23} And Adam <0120> said <0559>, This <02063> [is] now <06471> bone <06106> of my bones <06106>, and flesh <01320> of my flesh <01320>: she shall be called <07121> Woman <0802>, because <03588> she was taken <03947> out of Man <0376>.

NRSV - 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner." 19 So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken."

TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him." 19 So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and that is how they all got their names. 20 So the man named all the birds and all the animals; but not one of them was a suitable companion to help him. 21 Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 23 Then the man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind -- Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. "Woman' is her name because she was taken out of man." 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

<B9> John 3

KJV w/Strong# - {6} That which is born <1080> of the flesh <4561> is flesh <4561>; and that which is born <1080> of the Spirit <4151> is spirit <4151>.

NRSV - 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

TEV - "Jesus and Nicodemus" - 5 "I am telling you the truth," replied Jesus, "that no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 A person is born physically of human parents, but he is born spiritually of the Spirit. 7 Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again. 8 The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Additional note

S&H 528:9 - "Lord God [Jehovah, Yawah]"... "Lord God [Jehovah]"

SECTION 4

<B10> Genesis 3

KJV w/Strong# - {1} Now the serpent <05175> was more subtil <06175> than any <03605> beast <02416> of the field <07704> which <0834> the LORD <03068> God <0430> had made <06213>. And he said <0559> unto the woman <0802>, Yea, hath God <0430> said <0559>, Ye shall not eat <0398> of every <03605> tree <06086> of the garden <01588>? {2} And the woman <0802> said <0559> unto the serpent <05175>, We may eat <0398> of the fruit <06529> of the trees <06086> of the garden <01588>: {3} But of the fruit <06529> of the tree <06086> which <0834> [is] in the midst <08432> of the garden <01588>, God <0430> hath said <0559>, Ye shall not eat <0398> of it, neither shall ye touch <05060> it, lest <06435> ye die <04191>. (4} And the serpent <05175> said <0559> unto the woman <0802>, Ye shall not surely die <04191>: {5} For God <0430> doth know <03045> that in the day <03117> ye eat <0398> thereof, then your eyes <05869> shall be opened <06491>, and ye shall be as gods <0430>, knowing <03045> good <02896> and evil <07451>. {6} And when the woman <0802> saw <07200> that the tree <06086> [was] good <02896> for food <03978>, and that it [was] pleasant <08378> to the eyes <05869>, and a tree <06086> to be desired <02530> to make [one] wise <07919>, she took <03947> of the fruit <06529> thereof, and did eat <0398>, and gave <05414> also <01571> unto her husband <0376> with her; and he did eat <0398>.

NRSV - 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, "You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 but God said, "You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die."' 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; 5 for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 1 Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the LORD God had made. The snake asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?" 2 "We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden," the woman answered, 3 "except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die." 4 The snake replied, "That's not true; you will not die. 5 God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God and know what is good and what is bad." 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 7 As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. 8 That evening they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, and they hid from him among the trees. 9 But the LORD God called out to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." 11 "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?"

<B11> Colossians 2

KJV w/Strong# - {8} Beware <991> lest <3361> any <5100> man spoil <4812> you through <1223> philosophy <5385> and vain <2756> deceit <539>, after <2596> the tradition <3862> of men <444>, after <2596> the rudiments <4747> of the world <2889>, and not after <2596> Christ <5547>.

NRSV - 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.

TEV - "Fullness of Life in Christ" - 6 Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. 7 Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving. 8 See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by men and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ. 9 For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity, 10 and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.

<B12> 1 Thessalonians 5

KJV w/Strong# - {17} Pray <4336> without <89> ceasing <89>.

{21} Prove <1381> all <3956> things; hold <2722> fast <2722> that which <3588> is good <2570>.

NRSV - 17 pray without ceasing,

21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good;

TEV - "Final Instructions and Greetings" - 12 We beg you, our brothers, to pay proper respect to those who work among you, who guide and instruct you in the Christian life. 13 Treat them with the greatest respect and love because of the work they do. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 We urge you, our brothers, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people. 16 Be joyful always, 17 pray at all times, 18 be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus. 19 Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; 20 do not despise inspired messages. 21 Put all things to the test: keep what is good 22 and avoid every kind of evil. 23 May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being -- spirit, soul, and body -- free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful. 25 Pray also for us, brothers. 26 Greet all the believers with a brotherly kiss. 27 I urge you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

SECTION 5

<B13> Genesis 3

KJV w/Strong# - {9} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> called <07121> unto Adam <0120>, and said <0559> unto him, Where <0335> [art] thou? {10} And he said <0559>, I heard <08085> thy voice <06963> in the garden <01588>, and I was afraid <03372>, because <03588> I [was] naked <05903>; and I hid <02244> myself. {11} And he said <0559>, Who <04310> told <05046> thee that thou [wast] naked <05903>? Hast thou eaten <0398> of the tree <06086>, whereof <0834> I commanded <06680> thee that thou shouldest not eat <0398>? {12} And the man <0120> said <0559>, The woman <0802> whom <0834> thou gavest <05414> [to be] with me, she gave <05414> me of the tree <06086>, and I did eat <0398>. {13} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> said <0559> unto the woman <0802>, What <04100> [is] this <02063> [that] thou hast done <06213>? And the woman <0802> said <0559>, The serpent <05175> beguiled <05377> me, and I did eat <0398>. {14} And the LORD <03068> God <0430> said <0559> unto the serpent <05175>, Because <03588> thou hast done <06213> this <02063>, thou [art] cursed <0779> above all <03605> cattle <0929>, and above every <03605> beast <02416> of the field <07704>; upon thy belly <01512> shalt thou go <03212>, and dust <06083> shalt thou eat <0398> all <03605> the days <03117> of thy life <02416>:

{17} And unto Adam <0121> he said <0559>, Because <03588> thou hast hearkened <08085> unto the voice <06963> of thy wife <0802>, and hast eaten <0398> of the tree <06086>, of which <0834> I commanded <06680> thee, saying <0559>, Thou shalt not eat <0398> of it: cursed <0779> [is] the ground <0127> for thy sake <05668>; in sorrow <06093> shalt thou eat <0398> [of] it all <03605> the days <03117> of thy life <02416>;

NRSV - 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent tricked me, and I ate." 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

17 And to the man he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, "You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?" 12 The man answered, "The woman you put here with me gave me the fruit, and I ate it." 13 The LORD God asked the woman, "Why did you do this?" She replied, "The snake tricked me into eating it."

"God Pronounces Judgment" - 14 Then the LORD God said to the snake, "You will be punished for this; you alone of all the animals must bear this curse: From now on you will crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust as long as you live. 15 I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite their heel." 16 And he said to the woman, "I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him." 17 And he said to the man, "You listened to your wife and ate the fruit which I told you not to eat. Because of what you have done, the ground will be under a curse. You will have to work hard all your life to make it produce enough food for you. 18 It will produce weeds and thorns, and you will have to eat wild plants. 19 You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed. You were made from soil, and you will become soil again."

<B14> Romans 5

KJV w/Strong# - {18} ...as by the offence <3900> of one <1520> [judgment came] upon all <3956> men <444> to condemnation <2631>; even <2532> so <3779> by the righteousness <1345> of one <1520> [the free gift came] upon all <3956> men <444> unto justification <1347> of life <2222>.

NRSV - 18 Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all.

TEV - "Adam and Christ" - 18 So then, as the one sin condemned all mankind, in the same way the one righteous act sets all mankind free and gives them life. 19 And just as all people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way they will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man. 20 Law was introduced in order to increase wrongdoing; but where sin increased, God's grace increased much more. 21 So then, just as sin ruled by means of death, so also God's grace rules by means of righteousness, leading us to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

<B15> Romans 8

KJV w/Strong# - {1} [There is] therefore <686> now <3568> no <3762> condemnation <2631> to them which are in Christ <5547> Jesus <2424>, who walk <4043> not after <2596> the flesh <4561>, but after <2596> the Spirit <4151>. {2} For the law <3551> of the Spirit <4151> of life <2222> in Christ <5547> Jesus <2424> hath made <1659> me free <1659> from the law <3551> of sin <266> and death <2288>.

NRSV - 1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

TEV - "The Conflict in Man" - 1 There is no condemnation now for those who live in union with Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit, which brings us life in union with Christ Jesus, has set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 What the Law could not do, because human nature was weak, God did. He condemned sin in human nature by sending his own Son, who came with a nature like man's sinful nature, to do away with sin. 4 God did this so that the righteous demands of the Law might be fully satisfied in us who live according to the Spirit, and not according to human nature.

SECTION 6

<B16> Luke 8

KJV w/Strong# - {40} And it came <1096> to pass, that, when <3588> Jesus <2424> was returned <5290>, the people <3793> [gladly] received <588> him: for they were all <3956> waiting <4328> for him.

NRSV - 40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.

TEV - "Jairus' Daughter and the Woman Who Touched Jesus' Cloak" - 40 When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake, the people welcomed him, because they had all been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus arrived; he was an official in the local synagogue. He threw himself down at Jesus' feet and begged him to go to his home, 42 because his only daughter, who was twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went along, the people were crowding him from every side.

<B17> Luke 7

KJV w/Strong# - {1} Now <1161> when <1893> he had ended <4137> all <3956> his sayings <4487> in the audience <189> of the people <2992>, he entered <1525> into <1519> Capernaum <2584>.

{11} And it came <1096> to pass the day <2250> after <1836>, that he went <4198> into <1519> a city <4172> called <2564> Nain <3484>; and many <2425> of his disciples <3101> went <4848> with him, and much <4183> people <3793>. {12} Now <1161> when <5613> he came <1448> nigh <1448> to the gate <4439> of the city <4172>, behold <2400>, there was a dead <2348> man carried <1580> out, the only <3439> son <5207> of his mother <3384>, and she was a widow <5503>: and much <2425> people <3793> of the city <4172> was with her. {13} And when the Lord <2962> saw <1492> her, he had compassion <4697> on <1909> her, and said <2036> unto her, Weep <2799> not. {14} And he came <4334> and touched <680> the bier <4673>: and they that bare <941> [him] stood <2476> still <2476>. And he said <2036>, Young <3495> man <3495>, I say <3004> unto thee, Arise <1453>. {15} And he that was dead <3498> sat <339> up, and began <756> to speak <2980>. And he delivered <1325> him to his mother <3384>. {16} And there came <2983> a fear <5401> on all <537>: and they glorified <1392> God <2316>, saying <3004>, That a great <3173> prophet <4396> is risen <1453> up among <1722> us; and, That God <2316> hath visited <1980> his people <2992>.

NRSV - 1 After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.

11 Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people!"

TEV - "Jesus Heals a Roman Officer's Servant" - 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum. 2 A Roman officer there had a servant who was very dear to him; the man was sick and about to die. 3 When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant. 4 They came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, "This man really deserves your help. 5 He loves our people and he himself built a synagogue for us."

"Jesus Raises a Widow's Son" - 11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a town named Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12 Just as he arrived at the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out. The dead man was the only son of a woman who was a widow, and a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity for her, and he said to her, "Don't cry." 14 Then he walked over and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, "Young man! Get up, I tell you!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They all were filled with fear and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us!" they said; "God has come to save his people!" 17 This news about Jesus went out through all the country and the surrounding territory.

<B18> 1 Corinthians 15

KJV w/Strong# - {22} For as in Adam <76> all <3956> die <599>, even <2532> so <3779> in Christ <5547> shall all <3956> be made <2227> alive <2227>.

{48} As [is] the earthy <5517>, such <5108> [are] they also <2532> that are earthy <5517>: and as [is] the heavenly <2032>, such <5108> [are] they also <2532> that are heavenly <2032>. {49} And as we have borne <5409> the image <1504> of the earthy <5517>, we shall also <2532> bear <5409> the image <1504> of the heavenly <2032>.

NRSV - 22 for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ.

48 As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.

TEV - "Our Resurrection" - 20 But the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised. 21 For just as death came by means of a man, in the same way the rising from death comes by means of a man. 22 For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. 23 But each one will be raised in his proper order: Christ, first of all; then, at the time of his coming, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come; Christ will overcome all spiritual rulers, authorities, and powers, and will hand over the Kingdom to God the Father. 25 For Christ must rule until God defeats all enemies and puts them under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be defeated will be death.

"The Resurrection Body" - 47 The first Adam, made of earth, came from the earth; the second Adam came from heaven. 48 Those who belong to the earth are like the one who was made of earth; those who are of heaven are like the one who came from heaven. 49 Just as we wear the likeness of the man made of earth, so we will wear the likeness of the Man from heaven.

<B19> Galatians 3

KJV w/Strong# - {26} For ye are all <3956> the children <5207> of God <2316> by faith <4102> in Christ <5547> Jesus <2424>.

NRSV - 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

TEV - "The Purpose of the Law" - 26 It is through faith that all of you are God's sons in union with Christ Jesus. 27 You were baptized into union with Christ, and now you are clothed, so to speak, with the life of Christ himself. 28 So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free men, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are the descendants of Abraham and will receive what God has promised.
