plus other biblical resources to enrich the study of the current Bible Lesson
This BibleTexts Web page
HOW CAN THIS WEB PAGE BE HELPFUL TO YOU? This weekly Bible study aid is intended to provide optional research resources that can be used to more deeply explore the three components of the current Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson: the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (S&H), and the Christian Science Quarterly. The BibleTexts Website study aids enable students to read the Bible Lesson's biblical texts with a more accurate understanding of what the original Hebrew and Greek texts said. (See S&H 24:4; S&H 139:15; No and Yes 15:7-12) This aid also enables students to explore additional references in the Bible and in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy that shed further light on the value of the biblical citations in the Bible Lesson.
New Testament textual commentary contained on this Web page is based upon a word-by-word comparison, in Greek, of (a) the Greek New Testament used in 1611 by the KJV translators and (b) the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament (Third Edition and/or Fourth Revised Edition), which is widely regarded today as the definitive, best representation of the original New Testament text. Also on this Web page, the footnotes beneath the Bible verses list many cross-references to other Bible verses and pages in Mary Baker Eddy's writings that quote, allude to, or relate to the Bible Lesson's biblical citations.
The footnoted bold, unlined words (such as to:, omit:, and add:) indicate places where corrections of the Greek text resulted in noticeable changes in the English translation, as compared with the KJV wording. There are many additional places where the KJV's Greek text needs corrections but where also the corrections make no noticeable difference in the meaning of the text. For more details about this Web page, browse or click on http://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BT-info.html.
DOES THIS WEB SITE HAVE ANY DENOMINATIONAL OR ORGANIZATIONAL AFFILIATION? No, the BibleTexts Website is in no way affiliated with or sponsored by any church or any other organization; however, the individual solely responsible for this Website is a very active church member and is united in very genuine and meaningful fellowship with Christians of all denominations.
WHEN IS THIS WEB PAGE POSTED EACH WEEK? This Web page is usually ready at http://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BibleTexts.html by Saturday midnight (USA EST), a week prior to the Sunday for which the corresponding Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson is intended. If this Web page is ready early, it is posted at http://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BT-NextWeek.html. This week it was first posted on Sunday, 1/25/98, at 4:40 am (USA East Coast Time). It was last posted on Monday, 1/26/98, at 5:50 am.
The "Footnotes Only" text file, in Concord notebook-file format
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE TEXT FILE? The downloadable "Footnotes Only" text file is based on this BibleTexts Web page, and it designed for use with Concord. On this BibleTexts study aid, the footnotes beneath each Bible verse list many cross-references to other Bible verses and pages in Mary Baker Eddy's writings that quote, allude to, or relate to the corresponding Bible Lesson's biblical citations. The downloadable text file lists all of those cross-references, so that you can use Concord to easily read and study those cross-references. (This will save you either from page-flippping in the paper-based books or from manually typing the references into a Concord notebook file.)
WHEN IS THE FOOTNOTES ONLY TEXT FILE POSTED EACH WEEK? The "FOOTNOTES ONLY" text file is usually first posted at ftp://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BT-File-ThisWeek.txt by midnight on Monday of the week of the corresponding Bible Lesson. If the text file is ready early, it is posted at ftp://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BT-File-NextWeek.txt. To retrieve the text file, simply begin by browsing or clicking on the appropriate underlined address in this paragraph. This week it was first posted on Monday, 1/26/98, at 5:50 am (USA East Coast Time).
INSTRUCTIONS. Basic instructions for MAC and PC users on how to retrieve and use the "Footnotes Only" text file are found near the top of that text file. Step-by-step, keystroke-by-keystroke instructions for PC users can be found by browsing or clicking on http://members.aol.com/BibleTexts/BTF-instructions.html. <GT> Psalm 116
"A Man Saved from Death Praises God" (TEV) - 1 I love the LORD, because he hears me; he listens to my prayers. 2 He listens to me every time I call to him. 3 The danger of death was all around me; the horrors of the grave closed in on me; I was filled with fear and anxiety. 4 Then I called to the LORD, "I beg you, LORD, save me!" 5 The LORD is merciful and good; our God is compassionate. 6 The LORD protects the helpless; when I was in danger, he saved me. 7 Be confident, my heart, because the LORD has been good to me.
{5} Gracious <02587> [is] the LORD <03068>, and righteous <06662>; yea, our God <0430> [is] merciful <07355>.
<RR> Ezekiel 34
"The Good Shepherd" (TEV) - 11 "I, the Sovereign LORD, tell you that I myself will look for my sheep and take care of them 12 in the same way as a shepherd takes care of his sheep that were scattered and are brought together again. I will bring them back from all the places where they were scattered on that dark, disastrous day. 13 I will take them out of foreign countries, gather them together, and bring them back to their own land. I will lead them back to the mountains and the streams of Israel and will feed them in pleasant pastures. 14 I will let them graze in safety in the mountain meadows and the valleys and in all the green pastures of the land of Israel. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will find them a place to rest. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken. 16 "I will look for those that are lost, bring back those that wander off, bandage those that are hurt, and heal those that are sick; but those that are fat and strong I will destroy, because I am a shepherd who does what is right. 17 "Now then, my flock, I, the Sovereign LORD, tell you that I will judge each of you and separate the good from the bad, the sheep from the goats. 18 Some of you are not satisfied with eating the best grass; you even trample down what you don't eat! You drink the clear water and muddy what you don't drink! 19 My other sheep have to eat the grass you trample down and drink the water you muddy.
26 "I will bless them and let them live around my sacred hill. There I will bless them with showers of rain when they need it. 27 The trees will bear fruit, the fields will produce crops, and everyone will live in safety on his own land. When I break my people's chains and set them free from those who made them slaves, then they will know that I am the LORD. 28 The heathen nations will not plunder them any more, and the wild animals will not kill and eat them. They will live in safety, and no one will terrify them. 29 I will give them fertile fields and put an end to hunger in the land. The other nations will not sneer at them any more. 30 Everyone will know that I protect Israel and that they are my people. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken. 31 "You, my sheep, the flock that I feed, are my people, and I am your God," says the Sovereign LORD.
{11} For thus <03541> saith <0559> the Lord <0136> GOD <03069>; Behold <02005>, I, [even] I, will both search <01875> my sheep <06629>, and seek <01239> them out. {12} As a shepherd <07462> seeketh <01243> out his flock <05739> in the day <03117> that he is among <08432> his sheep <06629> [that are] scattered <06566>; so <03651> will I seek <01239> out my sheep <06629>, and will deliver <05337> them out of all <03605> places <04725> where they have been scattered <06327> in the cloudy <06051> and dark <06205> day <03117>. {13} And I will bring <03318> them out from the people <05971>, and gather <06908> them from the countries <0776>, and will bring <0935> them to their own land <0127>, and feed <07462> them upon the mountains <02022> of Israel <03478> by the rivers <0650>, and in all <03605> the inhabited <04186> places of the country <0776>.
{15} I will feed <07462> my flock <06629>, and I will cause them to lie <07257> down <07901>, saith <05002> the Lord <0136> GOD <03069>. {16} I will seek <01245> that which was lost <06>, and bring <07725> again <07725> that which was driven <05080> away, and will bind <02280> up [that which was] broken <07665>, and will strengthen <02388> that which was sick <02470>:...
{26} And I will make <05414> them and the places round <05439> about my hill <01389> a blessing <01293>; and I will cause the shower <01653> to come <03381> down <03381> in his season <06256>; there shall be showers <01653> of blessing <01293>.
{28} And they shall no <03808> more <05750> be a prey <0957> to the heathen <01471>, neither <03808> shall the beast <02416> of the land <0776> devour <0398> them; but they shall dwell <03427> safely <0983>, and none <0369> shall make [them] afraid <02729>.
{30} Thus shall they know <03045> that I the LORD <03068> their God <0430> [am] with them, and [that] they, [even] the house <01004> of Israel <03478>, [are] my people <05971>, saith <05002> the Lord <0136> GOD <03069>.
<B1> Psalm 86
"A Prayer for Help" (TEV) - 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully; teach me to serve you with complete devotion. 12 I will praise you with all my heart, O Lord my God; I will proclaim your greatness forever. 13 How great is your constant love for me! You have saved me from the grave itself. 14 Proud men are coming against me, O God; a gang of cruel men is trying to kill me -- people who pay no attention to you. 15 But you, O Lord, are a merciful and loving God, always patient, always kind and faithful. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; strengthen me and save me, because I serve you just as my mother did.
{15} ...thou, O Lord <0136>, [art] a God <0410> full of compassion <07349>, and gracious <02587>, longsuffering, and plenteous <07227> in mercy <02617> and truth <0571>.
<B2> Psalm 57
"A Prayer for Help" (TEV) - 6 My enemies have spread a net to catch me; I am overcome with distress. They dug a pit in my path, but fell into it themselves. 7 I have complete confidence, O God; I will sing and praise you! 8 Wake up, my soul! Wake up, my harp and lyre! I will wake up the sun. 9 I will thank you, O Lord, among the nations. I will praise you among the peoples. 10 Your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness touches the skies. 11 Show your greatness in the sky, O God, and your glory over all the earth.
{9} I will praise <03034> thee, O Lord <0136>, among the people <05971>: I will sing <02167> unto thee among the nations <03816>. {10} For thy mercy <02617> [is] great <01419> unto the heavens <08064>, and thy truth <0571> unto the clouds <07834>. {11} Be thou exalted <07311>, O God <0430>, above <05921> the heavens <08064>: [let] thy glory <03519> [be] above <05921> all <03605> the earth <0776>.
<B3> Psalm 69
"A Cry for Help" (TEV) - 16 Answer me, LORD, in the goodness of your constant love; in your great compassion turn to me! 17 Don't hide yourself from your servant; I am in great trouble -- answer me now! 18 Come to me and save me; rescue me from my enemies.
{16} Hear <06030> me, O LORD <03068>; for thy lovingkindness <02617> [is] good <02896>: turn <06437> unto me according to the multitude <07230> of thy tender mercies <07356>.
<B4> Lamentations 3
"Punishment, Repentance, and Hope" (TEV) - 19 The thought of my pain, my homelessness, is bitter poison. 20 I think of it constantly, and my spirit is depressed. 21 Yet hope returns when I remember this one thing: 22 The LORD's unfailing love and mercy still continue, 23 Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. 24 The LORD is all I have, and so in him I put my hope. 25 The LORD is good to everyone who trusts in him, 26 So it is best for us to wait in patience -- to wait for him to save us -- 27 And it is best to learn this patience in our youth.
37 The will of the Lord alone is always carried out. 38 Good and evil alike take place at his command. 39 Why should we ever complain when we are punished for our sin? 40 Let us examine our ways and turn back to the LORD. 41 Let us open our hearts to God in heaven and pray, 42 "We have sinned and rebelled, and you, O LORD, have not forgiven us.
{22} [It is of] the LORD'S <03068> mercies <02617> that we are not consumed <08552>, because <03588> his compassions <07355> fail <03615> not. {23} [They are] new <02319> every morning <01242>: great <07227> [is] thy faithfulness <0530>. {24} The LORD <03068> [is] my portion <02506>, saith <0559> my soul <05315>; therefore will I hope <03176> in him.
{41} Let us lift <05375> up our heart <03824> with [our] hands <03709> unto God <0410> in the heavens <08064>.
<B5> Jeremiah 31
"Israel's Return Home" (TEV) - 2 In the desert I showed mercy to those people who had escaped death. When the people of Israel longed for rest, 3 I appeared to them from far away. People of Israel, I have always loved you, so I continue to show you my constant love. 4 Once again I will rebuild you. Once again you will take up your tambourines and dance joyfully. 5 Once again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria, and those who plant them will eat what the vineyards produce. 6 Yes, the time is coming when watchmen will call out on the hills of Ephraim, "Let's go up to Zion, to the LORD our God."
{3} The LORD <03068> hath appeared <07200> of old <07350> unto me, [saying], Yea, I have loved <0157> thee with an everlasting <05769> love <0160>: therefore with lovingkindness <02617> have I drawn <04900> thee.
<B6> Psalm 142
"A Prayer for Help" (TEV) - 1 I call to the LORD for help; I plead with him. 2 I bring him all my complaints; I tell him all my troubles. 3 When I am ready to give up, he knows what I should do. In the path where I walk, my enemies have hidden a trap for me. 4 When I look beside me, I see that there is no one to help me, no one to protect me. No one cares for me. 5 LORD, I cry to you for help; you, LORD, are my protector; you are all I want in this life. 6 Listen to my cry for help, for I am sunk in despair. Save me from my enemies; they are too strong for me. 7 Set me free from my distress; then in the assembly of your people I will praise you because of your goodness to me.
{1} Maschil <07919> of David <01732>; A Prayer <08605> when he was <01961> in the cave <04631>. I cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068> with my voice <06963>; with my voice <06963> unto the LORD <03068> did I make my supplication <02603>.
{4} I looked <05027> on [my] right <03225> hand <03225>, and beheld <07200>, but [there was] no <0369> man that would know <05234> me: refuge <04498> failed <06> me; no <0369> man cared <01875> for my soul <05315>. {5} I cried <02199> unto thee, O LORD <03068>: I said <0559>, Thou [art] my refuge <04268> [and] my portion <02506> in the land <0776> of the living <02416>. {7} Bring <03318> my soul <05315> out of prison <04525>, that I may praise <03034> thy name <08034>: the righteous <06662> shall compass <03803> me about; for thou shalt deal <01580> bountifully <01580> with me.
<B7> Psalm 68
"A National Song of Triumph" (TEV) - 4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; prepare a way for him who rides on the clouds. His name is the LORD -- be glad in his presence! 5 God, who lives in his sacred Temple, cares for orphans and protects widows. 6 He gives the lonely a home to live in and leads prisoners out into happy freedom, but rebels will have to live in a desolate land.
{5} A father <01> of the fatherless <03490>, and a judge <01781> of the widows <0490>, [is] God <0430> in his holy <06944> habitation <04583>. {6} God <0430> setteth <03427> the solitary <03173> in families <01004>: he bringeth <03318> out those which are bound <0615> with chains <03574>:..
<B8> I Peter 5
"The Flock of God" (TEV) - 5 In the same way you younger men must submit yourselves to the older men. And all of you must put on the apron of humility, to serve one another; for the scripture says, "God resists the proud, but shows favor to the humble." 6 Humble yourselves, then, under God's mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. 7 Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.
{6} Humble <5013> yourselves therefore <3767> under <5259> the mighty <2900> hand <5495> of God <2316>, that he may exalt <5312> you in due time <2540>: {7} Casting <1977> all <3956> your <5216> care <3308> upon him; for he careth <3199> for you.
<B9> Isaiah 35
"The Road of Holiness" (TEV) - 1 The desert will rejoice, and flowers will bloom in the wastelands. 2 The desert will sing and shout for joy; it will be as beautiful as the Lebanon Mountains and as fertile as the fields of Carmel and Sharon. Everyone will see the LORD's splendor, see his greatness and power. 3 Give strength to hands that are tired and to knees that tremble with weakness. 4 Tell everyone who is discouraged, "Be strong and don't be afraid! God is coming to your rescue, coming to punish your enemies."
{3} Strengthen <02388> ye the weak <07504> hands <03027>, and confirm <0553> the feeble <03782> knees <01290>. {4} Say <0559> to them [that are] of a fearful <04116> heart <03820>, Be strong <02388>, fear <03372> not: behold <02009>, your God <0430> will come <0935> [with] vengeance <05359>, [even] God <0430> [with] a recompence <01576>; he will come <0935> and save <03467> you.
<B10> Psalm 103
"The Love of God" (TEV) - 1 Praise the LORD, my soul! All my being, praise his holy name! 2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and do not forget how kind he is. 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He keeps me from the grave and blesses me with love and mercy. 5 He fills my life with good things, so that I stay young and strong like an eagle.
{2} Bless <01288> the LORD <03068>, O my soul <05315>, and forget <07911> not all <03605> his benefits <01576>: {3} Who forgiveth <05545> all <03605> thine iniquities <05771>; who healeth <07495> all <03605> thy diseases <08463>; {4} Who redeemeth <01350> thy life <02416> from destruction <07845>; who crowneth <05849> thee with lovingkindness <02617> and tender mercies <07356>;
<B11> Psalm 56
"A Prayer of Trust in God" (TEV) - 1 Be merciful to me, O God, because I am under attack; my enemies persecute me all the time. 2 All day long my opponents attack me. There are so many who fight against me. 3 When I am afraid, O LORD Almighty, I put my trust in you. 4 I trust in God and am not afraid; I praise him for what he has promised. What can a mere human being do to me?
{1} Be merciful <02603> unto me, O God <0430>: for man <0582> would swallow <07602> me up;...
{4} In God <0430> I will praise <01984> his word <01697>, in God <0430> I have put my trust <0982>; I will not fear <03372> what <04100> flesh <01320> can do <06213> unto me.
<B12> II Timothy 1
"Thanksgiving and Encouragement" (TEV) - 3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did. I thank him as I remember you always in my prayers night and day. 4 I remember your tears, and I want to see you very much, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I remember the sincere faith you have, the kind of faith that your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice also had. I am sure that you have it also. 6 For this reason I remind you to keep alive the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control.
{7} For God <2316> hath not given <1325> us the spirit <4151> of fear <1167>; but of power <1411>, and of love <26>, and of a sound <4995> mind <4995>.
<B13> I John 4
"God Is Love" (TEV) - 15 If anyone declares that Jesus is the Son of God, he lives in union with God and God lives in union with him. 16 And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love, and whoever lives in love lives in union with God and God lives in union with him. 17 Love is made perfect in us in order that we may have courage on the Judgment Day; and we will have it because our life in this world is the same as Christ's. 18 There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.
{16} And we have known <1097> and believed <4100> the love <26> that God <2316> hath <2192> to us. God <2316> is love <26>; and he that dwelleth <3306> in love <26> dwelleth <3306> in God <2316>, and God <2316> [_] <-> in him. {17} Herein <5129> is our love <26> made <5048> perfect <5048>, that we may have <2192> boldness <3954> in the day <2250> of judgment <2920>: because <3754> as he is, so <2532> are we in this <5129> world <2889>. {18} There is no <3756> fear <5401> in love <26>; but perfect <5046> love <26> casteth <906> out fear <5401>:...
<B14> Mark 6
"Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men" (TEV) - 33 Many people, however, saw them leave and knew at once who they were; so they went from all the towns and ran ahead by land and arrived at the place ahead of Jesus and his disciples. 34 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw this large crowd, and his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things. 35 When it was getting late, his disciples came to him and said, "It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. 36 Send the people away, and let them go to the nearby farms and villages in order to buy themselves something to eat."
{34} And Jesus <2424>, when he came <1831> out, saw <1492> much <4183> people <3793>, and was moved <4697> with compassion <4697> toward <1909> them, because <3754> they were as sheep <4263> not having <2192> a shepherd <4166>: and he began <756> to teach <1321> them many <4183> things.
<B15> Mark 10
"Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus" (TEV) - 46 They came to Jericho, and as Jesus was leaving with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus son of Timaeus was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!" 48 Many of the people scolded him and told him to be quiet. But he shouted even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man. "Cheer up!" they said. "Get up, he is calling you." 50 So he threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. "Teacher," the blind man answered, "I want to see again." 52 "Go," Jesus told him, "your faith has made you well." At once he was able to see and followed Jesus on the road.
{46} And they came <2064> to Jericho <2410>: and as he went <1607> out of Jericho <2410> with his disciples <3101> and a great <2425> number <3793> of people <3793>, blind <5185> Bartimaeus <924>, the son <5207> of Timaeus <5090>, sat <2521> by the highway <3598> side <3844> begging <4319>. {47} And when he heard <191> that it was Jesus <2424> of Nazareth <3480>, he began <756> to cry <2896> out, and say <3004>, Jesus <2424>, [thou] Son <5207> of David <1138>, have mercy <1653> on me. {48} And many <4183> charged <2008> him that he should hold <4623> his peace <4623>: but he cried <2896> the more <3123> a great <4183> deal, [Thou] Son <5207> of David <1138>, have mercy <1653> on me. {49} And Jesus <2424> stood <2476> still <2476>, and <2532> commanded <2036> him <846> to be called <5455>. And they call <5455> the blind <5185> man, saying <3004> unto him, Be of good comfort <2293>, rise <1453>; he calleth <5455> thee. {50} And he, casting <577> away <577> his garment <2440>, rose <450>, and came <2064> to Jesus <2424>. {51} And Jesus <2424> answered <611> and said <3004> unto him, What <5101> wilt <2309> thou that I should do <4160> unto thee? The blind <5185> man said <2036> unto him, Lord <4462>, that I might receive <308> my sight <308>. {52} And Jesus <2424> said <2036> unto him, Go <5217> thy way; thy faith <4102> hath made <4982> thee whole <4982>. And immediately <2112> he received <308> his sight <308>, and followed <190> Jesus <2424> in the way <3598>.
<B16> I John 4
"God Is Love" (TEV) - 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. 10 This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven. 11 Dear friends, if this is how God loved us, then we should love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us, and his love is made perfect in us.
{7} Beloved <27>, let us love <25> one <240> another <240>: for love <26> is of God <2316>; and every <3956> one that loveth <25> is born <1080> of God <2316>, and knoweth <1097> God <2316>.
<B17> Matthew 25
"The Final Judgment" (TEV) - 31 "When the Son of Man comes as King and all the angels with him, he will sit on his royal throne, 32 and the people of all the nations will be gathered before him. Then he will divide them into two groups, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the righteous people at his right and the others at his left. 34 Then the King will say to the people on his right, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father! Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world. 35 I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, 36 naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.' 37 The righteous will then answer him, "When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? 38 When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?' 40 The King will reply, "I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me!'
{31} When <3752> the Son <5207> of man <444> shall come <2064> in his glory <1391>, and all <3956> the holy <40> angels <32> with him, then <5119> shall he sit <2523> upon the throne <2362> of his glory <1391>: {32} And before <1715> him shall be gathered <4863> all <3956> nations <1484>:...
{34} Then <5119> shall the King <935> say <2046> unto them on <1537> his right <1188> hand, Come <1205>, ye blessed <2127> of my Father <3962>, inherit <2816> the kingdom <932> prepared <2090> for you from the foundation <2602> of the world <2889>: {35} For <1063> I was an hungred <3983>, and ye gave <1325> me meat <5315>: I was thirsty <1372>, and ye gave <4222> me drink <4222>: I was <2252> a stranger <3581>, and ye took <4863> me in: {36} Naked <1131>, and ye clothed <4016> me: I was sick <770>, and ye visited <1980> me: I was <2252> in prison <5438>, and ye came <2064> unto me. {37} Then <5119> shall the righteous <1342> answer <611> him, saying <3004>, Lord <2962>, when <4219> saw <1492> we thee an hungred <3983>, and fed <5142> [thee]? or <2228> thirsty <1372>, and gave <4222> [thee] drink <4222>? {38} When <4219> saw <1492> we thee a stranger <3581>, and took <4863> [thee] in? or <2228> naked <1131>, and clothed <4016> [thee]? {39} Or <2228> when <4219> saw <1492> we thee sick <772>, or <2228> in prison <5438>, and came <2064> unto thee? {40} And the King <935> shall answer <611> and say <2046> unto them, Verily <281> I say <3004> unto you, Inasmuch <3745> as ye have done <4160> [it] unto one <1520> of the least <1646> of these <5130> my brethren <80>, ye have done <4160> [it] unto me.
<B18> II Corinthians 1
"Paul Gives Thanks to God" (TEV) - 3 Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes! 4 He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God. 5 Just as we have a share in Christ's many sufferings, so also through Christ we share in God's great help. 6 If we suffer, it is for your help and salvation; if we are helped, then you too are helped and given the strength to endure with patience the same sufferings that we also endure. 7 So our hope in you is never shaken; we know that just as you share in our sufferings, you also share in the help we receive.
{3} Blessed <2128> [be] God <2316>, even <2532> the Father <3962> of our Lord <2962> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>, the Father <3962> of mercies <3628>, and the God <2316> of all <3650> comfort <3874>; {4} Who <3588> comforteth <3870> us in all <3650> our tribulation <2347>, that we may be able <1410> to comfort <3870> them which are in any <3956> trouble <2347>, by the comfort <3874> wherewith <3739> we ourselves are comforted <3870> of God <2316>.
<B19> II Corinthians 9
"Help for Fellow Christians" (TEV) - 5 So I thought it was necessary to urge these brothers to go to you ahead of me and get ready in advance the gift you promised to make. Then it will be ready when I arrive, and it will show that you give because you want to, not because you have to. 6 Remember that the person who plants few seeds will have a small crop; the one who plants many seeds will have a large crop. 7 Each one should give, then, as he has decided, not with regret or out of a sense of duty; for God loves the one who gives gladly. 8 And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause.
{8} And God <2316> [is] able <1415> to make <4052> all <3956> grace <5485> abound <4052> toward <1519> you; that ye, always <3842> having <2192> all <3956> sufficiency <841> in all <3956> [things], may abound <4052> to every <3956> good <18> work <2041>:
<B20> Psalm 48
"Zion, the City of God" (TEV) - 1 The LORD is great and is to be highly praised in the city of our God, on his sacred hill. 2 Zion, the mountain of God, is high and beautiful; the city of the great king brings joy to all the world. 3 God has shown that there is safety with him inside the fortresses of the city.
9 Inside your Temple, O God, we think of your constant love. 10 You are praised by people everywhere, and your fame extends over all the earth. You rule with justice; 11 let the people of Zion be glad! You give right judgments; let there be joy in the cities of Judah! 12 People of God, walk around Zion and count the towers; 13 take notice of the walls and examine the fortresses, so that you may tell the next generation: 14 "This God is our God forever and ever; he will lead us for all time to come."
{1}Great <01419> [is] the LORD <03068>, and greatly <03966> to be praised <01984> in the city <05892> of our God <0430>, [in] the mountain <02022> of his holiness <06944>.
{3} God <0430> is known <03045> in her palaces <0759> for a refuge <04869>.
{9} We have thought <01819> of thy lovingkindness <02617>, O God <0430>, in the midst <07130> of thy temple <01964>.
{10} According to thy name <08034>, O God <0430>, so <03651> [is] thy praise <08416> unto the ends <07099> of the earth <0776>: thy right <03225> hand <03225> is full <04390> of righteousness <06664>.
<B21> Isaiah 54
"The LORD's Love for Israel" (TEV) - 9 "In the time of Noah I promised never again to flood the earth. Now I promise not to be angry with you again; I will not reprimand or punish you. 10 The mountains and hills may crumble, but my love for you will never end; I will keep forever my promise of peace." So says the LORD who loves you.
{10} For the mountains <02022> shall depart <04185>, and the hills <01389> be removed <04131>; but my kindness <02617> shall not depart <04185> from thee, neither <03808> shall the covenant <01285> of my peace <07965> be removed <04131>, saith <0559> the LORD <03068> that hath mercy <07355> on thee.
<B22> Isaiah 42
"God Promises to Help His People" (TEV) - 16 "I will lead my blind people by roads they have never traveled. I will turn their darkness into light and make rough country smooth before them. These are my promises, and I will keep them without fail. 17 All who trust in idols, who call images their gods, will be humiliated and disgraced."
{16} And I will bring <03212> the blind <05787> by a way <01870> [that] they knew <03045> not; I will lead <01869> them in paths <05410> [that] they have not known <03045>: I will make <07760> darkness <04285> light <0216> before <06440> them, and crooked <04625> things straight <04334>. These <0428> things <01697> will I do <06213> unto them, and not forsake <05800> them.
<B23> Isaiah 40
"Words of Hope" (TEV) - 3 A voice cries out, "Prepare in the wilderness a road for the LORD! Clear the way in the desert for our God! 4 Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. 5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind will see it. The LORD himself has promised this."
9 Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain and proclaim the good news! Call out with a loud voice, Zion; announce the good news! Speak out and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah that their God is coming! 10 The Sovereign LORD is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. 11 He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers.
{4} Every <03605> valley <01516> shall be exalted <05375>, and every <03605> mountain <02022> and hill <01389> shall be made low <08213>: and the crooked <06121> shall be made straight <04334>, and the rough <07406> places plain <01237>: {5} And the glory <03519> of the LORD <03068> shall be revealed <01540>, and all <03605> flesh <01320> shall see <07200> [it] together <03162>: for the mouth <06310> of the LORD <03068> hath spoken <01696> [it].
{9} O Zion <06726>, that bringest <01319> good <01319> tidings <01319>, get <05927> thee up into <05921> the high <01364> mountain <02022>; O Jerusalem <03389>, that bringest <01319> good tidings <01319>, lift <07311> up thy voice <06963> with strength <03581>; lift <07311> [it] up, be not afraid <03372>; say <0559> unto the cities <05892> of Judah <03063>, Behold <02009> your God <0430>!
{11} He shall feed <07462> his flock <05739> like a shepherd <07462>: he shall gather <06908> the lambs <02922> with his arm <02220>, and carry <05375> [them] in his bosom <02436>, [and] shall gently lead <05095> those that are with young <05763>.
