Everything is possible for the person who has faith." 24 The father at once cried out, "I do have faith, but not enough. Help me have more!" 25 Jesus noticed that the crowd was closing in on them, so he gave a command to the evil spirit. "Deaf and dumb spirit," he said, "I order you to come out of the boy and never go into him again!" 26 The spirit screamed, threw the boy into a bad fit, and came out. The boy looked like a corpse, and everyone said, "He is dead!" 27 But Jesus took the boy by the hand and helped him rise, and he stood up. 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive the spirit out?" 29 "Only prayer can drive this kind out," answered Jesus; "nothing else can."

    • Bratcher and Nida (A Translator's Handbook on the Gospel of Mark, page 287) - If you can is a highly elliptical expression and is likely to be badly misunderstood unless the contextual setting is more evident. In many instances people interpret this phrase as meaning 'if you can do so, then all things are possible...' However, this is not the meaning of the passage and in order to make clear what the intent of this express is, one can translate 'why do you say, If you can? Why, all things are possible to him who believes'.
  • Cranfield (The Cambridge Greek Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to St. Mark, page 302) - Translate: 'As to your "If you can",....' Jesus quotes the father's words in order to challenge them.
  • Johnson (Black's New Testament Commentaries, page 161) - The father's despairing cry is lifelike: but if you can, help us, take pity on us! Jesus throws back the words 'If you can'! It is here, in lack of faith, that the whole trouble resides.
  • Robertson (Word Pictures in the New Testament, Volume 1, page 342) If thou canst (to ei dunei). The Greek has a neat idiom not preserved in the English translation. The article takes up the very words of the man and puts the clause in the accusative case of general reference. "As to the 'if though canst,' all things can (dunata) to the one who believes." The word for "possible" is dunata, the same root as dunei (canst). This quick turn challenges the father's faith.
  • Schweizer (The GoodNews according to Mark, page 188) - Strictly speaking, Jesus' answer refers to his own faith; however, it is clearly intended to portray the entire history of the distress of human unbelief and superficial faith (vss. 19, 22, 24) and to offer help for it (vss. 23, 28 f.).

TEV - "The Twelve Apostles" - 1 Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and every sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.

• James R. White (The King James Only Controversy: Can You Trust the Modern Translations?, Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1995, p. 55) writes:

It is well known that Erasmus struggled with the text of Revelation. Not finding any manuscripts that contained the book, he borrowed one from his friend Reuchlin. Erasmus was quite please with the text, feeling that it was "of such great age that it might be thought to have been written in the time of the apostles." He had an unknown copyist make a fresh copy and returned the original to Reuchlin. The copyist had difficulty with the text (the manuscript contained a commentary on the book of Revelation, and the actual text of Scripture was imbedded in the commentary), and as a result made some mistakes that found their way into the printed editions of Erasmus' Greek text, and finally into the text of the King James Version.

• Bruce M. Metzger (The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration, Third, Enlarged Edition, NY: Oxford University Press, 1992, pp. 99-100) writes:

For the Book of Revelation he [Erasmus] had but one manuscript, dating from the twelfth century, which he had borrowed from his friend Reuchlin. Unfortunately, this manuscript lacked the final leaf, which had contained the last six verses of the book. For these verses, as well as a few other passages throughout the book where the Greek text of the Apocalypse and the adjoining Greek commentary with which the manuscript was supplied are so mixed up as to be almost indistinguishable, Erasmus depended upon the Latin Vulgate, translating this text into Greek. As would be expected from such a procedure, here and there in Erasmus' self-made Greek text are readings which have never been found in any known Greek manuscript - but which are still perpetuated today in printings of the so-called Textus Receptus of the Greek New Testament...
