NOTE: BibleTexts.com had been exploring temporary alternatives for the third Bible version used for the Bible Lesson Study Aid, because technical obstacles had made the TEV preparation too time-consuming at the present time. Last week the NAB was used. This week the NLT (New Living Translation) is being used. For the Bible Lesson Study Aid for 1/10-1/16, an effort will be made to return to the TEV. In the meantime you can explore the TEV online at http://crosswalk.com/. Excellent and inexpensive TEV Bibles are also available from the American Bible Society. For order info, see http://www.bibletexts.com/reviews/bibles/tev.htm. |

KJV - 1 Hear ye now what the Lord saith;
4 I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
6 Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
8 He hath shewed thee,
O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly,
and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
ESV - 1 Hear what the LORD says:...
4 ...I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
6 "With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil?...
8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
NLT - 1 Listen to what the LORD is saying:...
4 ...I brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from your slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to help you.
6 What can we bring to the LORD to make up for what we've done? Should we bow before God with offerings of yearling calves? 7 Should we offer him thousands of rams and tens of thousands of rivers of olive oil?...
8 No, O people, the LORD has already told you what is good, and this is what he requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

KJV (with corrections) - 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
13 Then cometh Jesus
from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad
him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it
becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus,
when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the
heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven,
saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
ESV - 1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
NLT - 1 In those days John the Baptist began preaching in the Judean wilderness. His message was, 2 "Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near. "
11 "I baptize with water those who turn from their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is far greater than I am-- so much greater that I am not even worthy to be his slave. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
13 Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. 14 But John didn't want to baptize him. "I am the one who needs to be baptized by you," he said, "so why are you coming to me?" 15 But Jesus said, "It must be done, because we must do everything that is right. " So then John baptized him. 16 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him."

KJV - 9 God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
ESV - 9 ...God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
NLT - 9 ...God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name that is above every other name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

KJV - 1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. 2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? 4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room;
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room;
11 For whosoever exalteth
himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
ESV - 1 One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. 2 And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?" 4 But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away.
7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor,...
10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place,...
11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
NLT - 1 One Sabbath day Jesus was in the home of a leader of the Pharisees. The people were watching him closely, 2 because there was a man there whose arms and legs were swollen. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in religious law, "Well, is it permitted in the law to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?" 4 When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away.
7 When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit near the head of the table, he gave them this advice: 8 "If you are invited to a wedding feast, don't always head for the best seat...
10 "Do this instead-- sit at the foot of the table...
11 For the proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored."

KJV - 19 the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
26 And as they were
eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the
disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the
[a] cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all
of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many
for the remission of sins.
ESV - 19 ...the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
NLT - 19 ...the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover supper there.
26 As they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and asked God's blessing on it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take it and eat it, for this is my body." 27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, "Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which seals the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many.

KJV - 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
12 So after he had
washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he
said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and
Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master,
have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For
I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
ESV - 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
NLT - 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel he had around him.
12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because it is true. 14 And since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

KJV (with corrections) - 7 none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
9 For to this end Christ
both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both
of the dead and living. 10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost
thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment
seat of Christ. 11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee
shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
ESV - 7 ...none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.
9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."
NLT - 7 ...we are not our own masters when we live or when we die.
9 Christ died and rose
again [revived or lived again] for this very purpose,
so that he might be Lord of those who are alive and of those who have died.
10 So why do you condemn another Christian? Why do you look down on another
Christian? Remember, each of us will stand personally before the judgment
seat of God. 11 For the Scriptures say, " 'As surely as I live,' says
the Lord, 'every knee will bow to me and every tongue will confess allegiance
to God.' "

KJV - 1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
19 Then the same day
at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where
the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood
in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had
so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples
glad, when they saw the Lord.
ESV - 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. (with corrections) - 1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to
the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael
of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also
go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately;
and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning was now come,
Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered
him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the
ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able
to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
14 This is now the
third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was
risen from the dead.
ESV - 1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, "Children, do you have any fish?" They answered him, "No." 6 He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.
12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord.
14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
NLT - 1 Later Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there-- Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. 3 Simon Peter said, "I'm going fishing." "We'll come, too," they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. 4 At dawn the disciples saw Jesus standing on the beach, but they couldn't see who he was. 5 He called out, "Friends, have you caught any fish?" "No," they replied. 6 Then he said, "Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you'll get plenty of fish!" So they did, and they couldn't draw in the net because there were so many fish in it.
9 When they got there, they saw that a charcoal fire was burning and fish were frying over it, and there was bread.
12 "Now come and have some breakfast!" Jesus said. And no one dared ask him if he really was the Lord because they were sure of it.
14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

KJV
(with corrections) - 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and
earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his
glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and
grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the
breadth, and length, and depth, and height, [and depth];
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might
be filled with all the fulness of God.
ESV - 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
NLT - 14 When I think of the wisdom and scope of God's plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. 17 And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Bible Lesson | The Bible Lesson's 3 components and BibleTexts.com's online Bible Lesson research tools are listed and described at http://www.bibletexts.com/bl-components.htm. |
King James Version (KJV) -- Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.
