- 17
We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and
art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast
reigned.
NRSV - 17 ..."We give you thanks, Lord God Almighty, who are and who were, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
TEV - "The Seventh Trumpet" - 15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The power to rule over the world belongs now to our Lord and his Messiah, and he will rule forever and ever!" 16 Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones in front of God threw themselves face downward and worshiped God, 17 saying: "Lord God Almighty, the one who is and who was! We thank you that you have taken your great power and have begun to rule!

NRSV - 1 The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved; 2 your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. 3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. 4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the LORD!
TEV - "God the King" - 1 The LORD is king. He is clothed with majesty and strength. The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved. 2 Your throne, O LORD, has been firm from the beginning, and you existed before time began. 3 The ocean depths raise their voice, O LORD; they raise their voice and roar. 4 The LORD rules supreme in heaven, greater than the roar of the ocean, more powerful than the waves of the sea. 5 Your laws are eternal, LORD, and your Temple is holy indeed, forever and ever.

KJV - 1 Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength. 2 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
10 The Lord sitteth upon
the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever. 11 The Lord will give strength
unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.
NRSV - 1 Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name; worship the LORD in holy splendor. 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
10 The LORD sits enthroned
over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the LORD give
strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace!
TEV - "The Voice of the LORD in the Storm" - 1 Praise the LORD, you heavenly beings; praise his glory and power. 2 Praise the LORD's glorious name; bow down before the Holy One when he appears. 3 The voice of the LORD is heard on the seas; the glorious God thunders, and his voice echoes over the ocean. 4 The voice of the LORD is heard in all its might and majesty. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, even the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes the mountains of Lebanon jump like calves and makes Mount Hermon leap like a young bull. 7 The voice of the LORD makes the lightning flash. 8 His voice makes the desert shake; he shakes the desert of Kadesh. 9 The LORD's voice shakes the oaks and strips the leaves from the trees while everyone in his Temple shouts, "Glory to God!" 10 The LORD rules over the deep waters; he rules as king forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace.

KJV - 6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. 7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. 8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
10 Who hath formed a god,
or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
NRSV - 6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. 8 Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one.
10 Who would fashion a god
or cast an image that can do no good?
TEV - "The LORD Is the Only God" - 6 The LORD, who rules and protects Israel, the LORD Almighty, has this to say: "I am the first, the last, the only God; there is no other god but me. 7 Could anyone else have done what I did? Who could have predicted all that would happen from the very beginning to the end of time? 8 Do not be afraid, my people! You know that from ancient times until now I have predicted all that would happen, and you are my witnesses. Is there any other god? Is there some powerful god I never heard of?"
"Idolatry Is Ridiculed" - 9 All those who make idols are worthless, and the gods they prize so highly are useless. Those who worship these gods are blind and ignorant -- and they will be disgraced. 10 It does no good to make a metal image to worship as a god! 11 Everyone who worships it will be humiliated. The people who make idols are human beings and nothing more. Let them come and stand trial -- they will be terrified and will suffer disgrace. 12 The metalworker takes a piece of metal and works with it over a fire. His strong arm swings a hammer to pound the metal into shape. As he works, he gets hungry, thirsty, and tired.

KJV - 4 the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.
6 By the word of the
Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his
mouth. 7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth
up the depth in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the
inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done;
he commanded, and it stood fast.
NRSV - 4 ...the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.
6 By the word of the LORD
the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. 7 He
gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle; he put the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand
in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood
firm.
TEV - "A Song of Praise" - 1 All you that are righteous, shout for joy for what the LORD has done; praise him, all you that obey him. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with harps, sing to him with stringed instruments. 3 Sing a new song to him, play the harp with skill, and shout for joy! 4 The words of the LORD are true, and all his works are dependable. 5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. 6 The LORD created the heavens by his command, the sun, moon, and stars by his spoken word. 7 He gathered all the seas into one place; he shut up the ocean depths in storerooms. 8 Worship the LORD, all the earth! Honor him, all peoples of the world! 9 When he spoke, the world was created; at his command everything appeared. 10 The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. 11 But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD; happy are the people he has chosen for his own!

KJV - 12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
NRSV - 12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
TEV - "A Hymn of Praise to God" - 12 The LORD made the earth by his power; by his wisdom he created the world and stretched out the heavens. 13 At his command the waters above the sky roar; he brings clouds from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning flash in the rain and sends the wind from his storeroom.

13 Thy kingdom is an

NRSV - 10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD, and all your faithful shall bless you. 11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom, and tell of your power,
13 Your kingdom is an
everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The LORD is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds.
TEV - "A Hymn of Praise" - 10 All your creatures, LORD, will praise you, and all your people will give you thanks. 11 They will speak of the glory of your royal power and tell of your might, 12 so that everyone will know your mighty deeds and the glorious majesty of your kingdom. 13 Your rule is eternal, and you are king forever. KJV - 3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
NRSV - 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his;...
TEV - "A Hymn of Praise" - 3 Acknowledge that the LORD is God. He made us, and we belong to him; we are his people, we are his flock. 4 Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving; go into its courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise him. 5 The LORD is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever.
B6 - Isa 29 | Bible citations | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
16 Surely your turning
of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall
the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed
say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
NRSV - 13 The Lord said: Because these people draw near with their mouths and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their worship of me is a human commandment learned by rote; 14 so I will again do amazing things with this people, shocking and amazing. The wisdom of their wise shall perish, and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden.
16 You turn things upside
down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay? Shall the thing made say
of its maker, "He did not make me"; or the thing formed say of
the one who formed it, "He has no understanding"?
TEV - "Disregarded Warnings" - 13 The Lord said, "These people claim to worship me, but their words are meaningless, and their hearts are somewhere else. Their religion is nothing but human rules and traditions, which they have simply memorized. 14 So I will startle them with one unexpected blow after another. Those who are wise will turn out to be fools, and all their cleverness will be useless."
"Hope for the
Future" - 15 Those who try to hide their plans from the LORD are
doomed! They carry out their schemes in secret and think no one will see
them or know what they are doing. 16 They turn everything upside down.
Which is more important, the potter or the clay? Can something a man has
made tell him, "You didn't make me"? Or can it say to him, "You
don't know what you are doing"? 17 As the saying goes, before long
the dense forest will become farmland, and the farmland will go back to
forest.

KJV - 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
NRSV - 5 Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in the mother's womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes everything.
TEV - "What a Wise Man Does" - 1 Invest your money in foreign trade, and one of these days you will make a profit. 2 Put your investments in several places -- many places even -- because you never know what kind of bad luck you are going to have in this world. 3 No matter which direction a tree falls, it will lie where it fell. When the clouds are full, it rains. 4 If you wait until the wind and the weather are just right, you will never plant anything and never harvest anything. 5 God made everything, and you can no more understand what he does than you understand how new life begins in the womb of a pregnant woman. 6 Do your planting in the morning and in the evening, too. You never know whether it will all grow well or whether one planting will do better than the other.

KJV - 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
NRSV - 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved. 17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
TEV - "Testing and Tempting" - 16 Do not be deceived, my dear brothers! 17 Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning. 18 By his own will he brought us into being through the word of truth, so that we should have first place among all his creatures.

KJV - 17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
NRSV - 17 Ah Lord GOD! It is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
TEV - "Jeremiah's Prayer" - 16 After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch, I prayed, 17 "Sovereign LORD, you made the earth and the sky by your great power and might; nothing is too difficult for you. 18 You have shown constant love to thousands, but you also punish people for the sins of their parents. You are a great and powerful God; you are the LORD Almighty. 19 You make wise plans and do mighty things; you see everything that people do, and you reward them according to their actions. 20 Long ago you performed miracles and wonders in Egypt, and you have continued to perform them to this day, both in Israel and among all the other nations, so that you are now known everywhere. 21 By means of miracles and wonders that terrified our enemies, you used your power and might to bring your people Israel out of Egypt.

KJV - 1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
8 And the word of the
Lord came unto him, saying, 9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth
to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there
to sustain thee. 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came
to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of
sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little
water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11 And as she was going to fetch it,
he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in
thine hand. 12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake,
but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold,
I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son,
that we may eat it, and die. 13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and
do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring
it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14 For thus saith the
Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the
cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and
he, and her house, did eat many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not,
neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which
he spake by Elijah.
NRSV - 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."
8 Then the word of the
LORD came to him, saying, 9 "Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to
Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you."
10 So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the
town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring
me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." 11 As she was
going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of
bread in your hand." 12 But she said, "As the LORD your God lives,
I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil
in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and
prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." 13
Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said;
but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards
make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the LORD the
God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will
not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth." 15 She
went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household
ate for many days. 16 The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug
of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.
TEV - "Elijah and the Drought" - 1 A prophet named Elijah, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to King Ahab, "In the name of the LORD, the living God of Israel, whom I serve, I tell you that there will be no dew or rain for the next two or three years until I say so." 2 Then the LORD said to Elijah, 3 "Leave this place and go east and hide yourself near Cherith Brook, east of the Jordan. 4 The brook will supply you with water to drink, and I have commanded ravens to bring you food there." 5 Elijah obeyed the LORD's command, and went and stayed by Cherith Brook. 6 He drank water from the brook, and ravens brought him bread and meat every morning and every evening. 7 After a while the brook dried up because of the lack of rain.
"Elijah and the Widow in Zarephath" - 8 Then the LORD said to Elijah, 9 "Now go to the town of Zarephath, near Sidon, and stay there. I have commanded a widow who lives there to feed you." 10 So Elijah went to Zarephath, and as he came to the town gate, he saw a widow gathering firewood. "Please bring me a drink of water," he said to her. 11 And as she was going to get it, he called out, "And please bring me some bread, too." 12 She answered, "By the living LORD your God I swear that I don't have any bread. All I have is a handful of flour in a bowl and a bit of olive oil in a jar. I came here to gather some firewood to take back home and prepare what little I have for my son and me. That will be our last meal, and then we will starve to death." 13 "Don't worry," Elijah said to her. "Go on and prepare your meal. But first make a small loaf from what you have and bring it to me, and then prepare the rest for you and your son. 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: "The bowl will not run out of flour or the jar run out of oil before the day that I, the LORD, send rain." 15 The widow went and did as Elijah had told her, and all of them had enough food for many days. 16 As the LORD had promised through Elijah, the bowl did not run out of flour nor did the jar run out of oil.
Elijahs second place of refuge is the Phoenician city of Zarephath or Sarepta, where he finds shelter with a widow. In place of the miracle of the ravens is the miracle of the unfailing jar of meal and cruse of oil,... The closest biblical parallel is found in 2 Kings 4:1-7 in the Elisha cycle, where the widow of one of the sons of the prophets is sustained by a bountiful jar of oil (cf. 2 Kings 4:42-44 and, more remotely, Matt. 14:13-21; 15:32-38; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-14).

KJV - 17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
21 And he stretched
himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O
Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. 22
And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into
him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him
down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother:
and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now
by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord
in thy mouth is truth.
NRSV - 17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 She then said to Elijah, "What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!" 19 But he said to her, "Give me your son." He took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he was lodging, and laid him on his own bed.
21 Then he stretched
himself upon the child three times, and cried out to the LORD, "O LORD
my God, let this child's life come into him again." 22 The LORD listened
to the voice of Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he
revived. 23 Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper chamber
into the house, and gave him to his mother; then Elijah said, "See,
your son is alive." 24 So the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know
that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is
truth."
TEV - "Elijah and the Widow in Zarephath" - 17 Some time later the widow's son got sick; he got worse and worse, and finally he died. 18 She said to Elijah, "Man of God, why did you do this to me? Did you come here to remind God of my sins and so cause my son's death?" 19 "Give the boy to me," Elijah said. He took the boy from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying, and laid him on the bed. 20 Then he prayed aloud, "O LORD my God, why have you done such a terrible thing to this widow? She has been kind enough to take care of me, and now you kill her son!" 21 Then Elijah stretched himself out on the boy three times and prayed, "O LORD my God, restore this child to life!" 22 The LORD answered Elijah's prayer; the child started breathing again and revived. 23 Elijah took the boy back downstairs to his mother and said to her, "Look, your son is alive!" 24 She answered, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the LORD really speaks through you!"
This miracle also has a close parallel in the Elisha cycle (cf. 2 Kings 4:18-37). In the present story, the widows reactions have thematic importance. When her child is on the verge of death, she angrily blames the catastrophe on Elijah. Various forms of guilt or impurity that might otherwise be inconsequential become dangerous in the presence of the holy man (1 Kings 17:18). When her son is revived, however, she is moved to acclaim the special powers of Elijah, which the transmission of vitality from his body to that of the child has demonstrated (v. 21), and to acknowledge the veracity of the word of Yahweh (v. 24).

NRSV - 8 O LORD God of hosts, who is as mighty as you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you. 9 You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.
TEV - "A Hymn in Time of National Trouble" - 8 LORD God Almighty, none is as mighty as you; in all things you are faithful, O LORD. 9 You rule over the powerful sea; you calm its angry waves. 10 You crushed the monster Rahab and killed it; with your mighty strength you defeated your enemies.

KJV - 5 Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
NRSV - 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations,
TEV - "The LORD's Servant" - 5 God created the heavens and stretched them out; he fashioned the earth and all that lives there; he gave life and breath to all its people. And now the LORD God says to his servant, 6 "I, the LORD, have called you and given you power to see that justice is done on earth. Through you I will make a covenant with all peoples; through you I will bring light to the nations. 7 You will open the eyes of the blind and set free those who sit in dark prisons.

KJV - 7 Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea:
NRSV - 7 Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea,...
TEV - "A Crowd by the Lake" - 7 Jesus and his disciples went away to Lake Galilee, and a large crowd followed him. They had come from Galilee, from Judea, 8 from Jerusalem, from the territory of Idumea, from the territory on the east side of the Jordan, and from the region around the cities of Tyre and Sidon. All these people came to Jesus because they had heard of the things he was doing. 9 The crowd was so large that Jesus told his disciples to get a boat ready for him, so that the people would not crush him. 10 He had healed many people, and all the sick kept pushing their way to him in order to touch him. 11 And whenever the people who had evil spirits in them saw him, they would fall down before him and scream, "You are the Son of God!"

KJV - 1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
41 And they feared
exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even
the wind and the sea obey him?
NRSV - 1 Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm.
41 And they were filled
with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even
the wind and the sea obey him?"
TEV - "The Parable of the Sower" - 1 Again Jesus began to teach beside Lake Galilee. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it. The boat was out in the water, and the crowd stood on the shore at the water's edge. 2 He used parables to teach them many things, saying to them:
"Jesus Calms a Storm" - 35 On the evening of that same day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side of the lake." 36 So they left the crowd; the disciples got into the boat in which Jesus was already sitting, and they took him with them. Other boats were there too. 37 Suddenly a strong wind blew up, and the waves began to spill over into the boat, so that it was about to fill with water. 38 Jesus was in the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we are about to die?" 39 Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, "Be quiet!" and he said to the waves, "Be still!" The wind died down, and there was a great calm. 40 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Why are you frightened? Do you still have no faith?" 41 But they were terribly afraid and began to say to one another, "Who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

KJV - 19 The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
NRSV - 19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens;
TEV - "Advice to Young Men" - 11 Son, when the LORD corrects you, pay close attention and take it as a warning. 12 The LORD corrects those he loves, as a father corrects a son of whom he is proud. 13 Happy is the man who becomes wise -- who comes to have understanding. 14 There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. 15 Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. 16 Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. 17 Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. 18 Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life. 19 The LORD created the earth by his wisdom; by his knowledge he set the sky in place.

KJV - 11 I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. 12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
14 Thou art the God
that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
NRSV - 11 I will call to mind the deeds of the LORD; I will remember your wonders of old. 12 I will meditate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds.
14 You are the God who
works wonders; you have displayed your might among the peoples.
TEV - "Comfort in Time of Distress" - 11 I will remember your great deeds, LORD; I will recall the wonders you did in the past. 12 I will think about all that you have done; I will meditate on all your mighty acts. 13 Everything you do, O God, is holy. No god is as great as you. 14 You are the God who works miracles; you showed your might among the nations. 15 By your power you saved your people, the descendants of Jacob and of Joseph.

KJV - 11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. 12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. 13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.
15 Blessed is the people
that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy
countenance.
NRSV - 11 The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it -- you have founded them. 12 The north and the south -- you created them; Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. 13 You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand.
15 Happy are the people
who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your countenance;
TEV - "A Hymn in Time of National Trouble" - 11 Heaven is yours, the earth also; you made the world and everything in it. 12 You created the north and the south; Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon sing to you for joy. 13 How powerful you are! How great is your strength! 14 Your kingdom is founded on righteousness and justice; love and faithfulness are shown in all you do. 15 How happy are the people who worship you with songs, who live in the light of your kindness! 16 Because of you they rejoice all day long, and they praise you for your goodness. 17 You give us great victories; in your love you make us triumphant. 18 You, O LORD, chose our protector; you, the Holy God of Israel, gave us our king.
On this verse A.A. Anderson (Psalms, Volume 2 of 2, New Century Bible Commentary, London: Oliphants, 1972, page 638) comments,
The Hebrew teruah ('festal shout') is the noise of shouting, or the noise created by the musical instruments... In this context teruah is the response of the people; they know not only what to shout... but they have also experienced the significance of the acclamation. They praise Yahweh [Jehovah, the Lord], not simply because it is the right thing to do, but because they are overwhelmed by his goodness and majesty."
Robert G. Bratcher and William D. Reyburn (A Handbook on Psalms, New York: United Bible Societies, 1991, page 776.) comment:
In verse 15a we are not sure exactly how the festal shout was expressed in Temple worship, but it certainly involved praise. The same term is used for the shout of the Israelites when the walls of Jericho fell, so it may have implied victory (Josh 6.20). It seems best to express the function of the words 'know the festal shout' as 'know how to sing praises to you,' 'know how to praise you with song.'

King James Version (KJV) -- Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.
