This word is explained by Brown, Driver, and Briggs (Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, London: Oxford, 1978, page 441) as meaning, "substance, being, existence". This is the only instance in the Old Testament where the Hebrew word yesh is used as a noun and the only instance where it is translated in the Old Testament as "substance." In the KJV all other instances of the English word substance are translations from other Hebrew words, all of which which have different meanings.
  • William McKane (Old Testament Library: Proverbs, Philadelphia: Westminster Press, 1970, p. 350) comments:

    [17-21] ...As for the gifts which she [Wisdom] bestows or bequeathes (lehanhil, v. 21), these include material prosperity, which, however, as in vv. 10f, is distinguished from vulgar opulence. The fruit of Wisdom is better than gold and her produce better than silver. What she offers is wealth or property (yes, v. 21) with kabod and sedaqa. This is not meretricious or speculative wealth; it is located in a framework of values and is an ingredient of a way of life which bestows gravitas and social wholeness. Hence wealth with kabod is solid wealth or wealth with a basis in a traditional evaluation of what constitutes the good life (hon 'ateq, v. 18). The paradox is that when wealth is the chief end of life it corrupts, whereas when it is subordinated to wisdom it may be enjoyed as an aspect of welfare and honour... What Wisdom gives essentially is a way of life which possesses ethical fitness and equity (v. 20).

    The next episode in the Marcan source is the Syrophoenician woman. Again, Matthew introduces a number of changes. The woman is now a Canaanite. The actual healing of the woman’s daughter is reduced to a brief statement of the fact (v. 28c; cf. Mark 7:30). Thus, the emphasis is thrown upon Jesus’ dialogues. First, there is a new preliminary dialogue between Jesus and his disciples (Matt. 15:23-24). Jesus is made to represent the earlier, strict Jewish Christian point of view that the mission was confined to the (lost) sheep of the house of Israel. Matthew assures his Jewish Christians that the difference between Jew and Gentile must be taken very seriously. (Matthew is no starry-eyed dreamer who thinks that human differences do not matter.) It is only the redeeming work of Christ and the human response of faith that can overcome that barrier. But the barrier can be overcome. That is something Matthew’s Jewish Christians must now realize.

"The People Seek Jesus" - 22 Next day the crowd which had stayed on the other side of the lake realized that there had been only one boat there. They knew that Jesus had not gone in it with his disciples, but that they had left without him. 23 Other boats, which were from Tiberias, came to shore near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into those boats and went to Capernaum, looking for him.

"Jesus the Bread of Life" - 25 When the people found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they said to him, "Teacher, when did you get here?" 26 Jesus answered, "I am telling you the truth: you are looking for me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood my miracles. 27 Do not work for food that spoils; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life. TEV - "Jesus Curses the Fig Tree" - 18 On his way back to the city early next morning, Jesus was hungry. 19 He saw a fig tree by the side of the road and went to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. So he said to the tree, "You will never again bear fruit!" At once the fig tree dried up. 20 The disciples saw this and were astounded. "How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?" they asked. 21 Jesus answered, "I assure you that if you believe and do not doubt, you will be able to do what I have done to this fig tree. And not only this, but you will even be able to say to this hill, "Get up and throw yourself in the sea,' and it will. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

TEV - "Jesus' Teaching on Prayer" - 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. And do not bring us to hard testing." 5 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Suppose one of you should go to a friend's house at midnight and say to him, "Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread. 6 A friend of mine who is on a trip has just come to my house, and I don't have any food for him!' 7 And suppose your friend should answer from inside, "Don't bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' 8 Well, what then? I tell you that even if he will not get up and give you the bread because you are his friend, yet he will get up and give you everything you need because you are not ashamed to keep on asking. 9 And so I say to you: Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks will receive, and he who seeks will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks. 11 Would any of you who are fathers give your son a snake when he asks for fish? 12 Or would you give him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
