KJV - 20 glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
NRSV - 20 ...glorify God in your body.
TEV - "Use Your Bodies for God's Glory" - 18 Avoid immorality. Any other sin a man commits does not affect his body; but the man who is guilty of sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourselves but to God; 20 he bought you for a price. So use your bodies for God's glory.

20 For our conversation
is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his
glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue
all things unto himself.
NRSV - 13 Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differently about anything, this too God will reveal to you.
20 But our citizenship is
in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus
Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed
to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things
subject to himself.
TEV - "Running toward the Goal" - 12 I do not claim that I have already succeeded or have already become perfect. I keep striving to win the prize for which Christ Jesus has already won me to himself. 13 Of course, my brothers, I really do not 4 think that I have already won it; the one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead. 14 So I run straight toward the goal in order to win the prize, which is God's call through Christ Jesus to the life above. 15 All of us who are spiritually mature should have this same attitude. But if some of you have a different attitude, God will make this clear to you. 16 However that may be, let us go forward according to the same rules we have followed until now. 17 Keep on imitating me, my brothers. Pay attention to those who follow the right example that we have set for you. 18 I have told you this many times before, and now I repeat it with tears: there are many whose lives make them enemies of Christ's death on the cross. 19 They are going to end up in hell, because their god is their bodily desires. They are proud of what they should be ashamed of, and they think only of things that belong to this world. 20 We, however, are citizens of heaven, and we eagerly wait for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven. 21 He will change our weak mortal bodies and make them like his own glorious body, using that power by which he is able to bring all things under his rule.
politeuma occurs only at Phil. 3:20 where Paul contrasts the Christian life-style with that of the "enemies of the cross of Christ" (3:18): "But our commonwealth [politeuma] is in heaven, and from it we await our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ" (RSV). The older translation" citizenship" (RV) stresses the status of the believers, whereas "conversation (AV [KJV]), i.e. way of life, has affinities with the vb. politeuomai... M. Dibelius suggests "colony"... But the meaning is more likely to be that of "capital or native city, which keeps the citizens on its registers"... The second half of the verse requires a place to be meant here, in order to make sense of the remark "and from it we await". Moreover, "the background of the word in this context, is the situation related to the capital city of Rome."... As Roman subjects, the Phillipian Christians owed an allegiance to the far off capital city of Rome. At the same time, they had "another king, one Jesus" (Acts 17:7). Hence, on earth they are resident aliens who dwell temporarily in a foreign country but who have their capital and homeland elsewhere (cf. 1 Pet. 1:1; 2:11; Jas. 1:1; Heb. 11:13; Ep. Diog. 5).
RR2 - Phi 4 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
20 Now unto God and our
Father be glory for ever and ever
NRSV - 1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
20 To our God and Father
be glory forever and ever...
TEV - "Instructions" - 1 So then, my brothers, how dear you are to me and how I miss you! How happy you make me, and how proud I am of you! -- this, dear brothers, is how you should stand firm in your life in the Lord. 2 Euodia and Syntyche, please, I beg you, try to agree as sisters in the Lord. 3 And you too, my faithful partner, I want you to help these women; for they have worked hard with me to spread the gospel, together with Clement and all my other fellow workers, whose names are in God's book of the living. 4 May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. I say it again: rejoice! 5 Show a gentle attitude toward everyone. The Lord is coming soon. 6 Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. 7 And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus. 8 In conclusion, my brothers, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. 9 Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.
"Thanks for the Gift" - 20 To our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen.

KJV - 1 O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
14 I will praise thee;
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that
my soul knoweth right well.
NRSV - 1 O LORD, you have searched me and known me.
14 I praise you, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
TEV - "God's Complete Knowledge and Care" - 1 LORD, you have examined me and you know me. 2 You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts. 3 You see me, whether I am working or resting; you know all my actions. 4 Even before I speak, you already know what I will say. 5 You are all around me on every side; you protect me with your power. 6 Your knowledge of me is too deep; it is beyond my understanding.
13 You created every part
of me; you put me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because you
are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my
heart. 15 When my bones were being formed, carefully put together in my
mother's womb, when I was growing there in secret, you knew that I was there
-- 16 you saw me before I was born. The days allotted to me had all been recorded
in your book, before any of them ever began.
B2 - Psa 147 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God;
4 He telleth the number
of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
NRSV - 1 Praise the LORD! How good it is to sing praises to our God;...
4 He determines the number
of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.
TEV - "In Praise of God the Almighty" - 1 Praise the LORD! It is good to sing praise to our God; it is pleasant and right to praise him. 2 The LORD is restoring Jerusalem; he is bringing back the exiles. 3 He heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds. 4 He has decided the number of the stars and calls each one by name. 5 Great and mighty is our Lord; his wisdom cannot be measured. 6 He raises the humble, but crushes the wicked to the ground.
B3 - 1Co 15 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
NRSV - 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; indeed, star differs from star in glory.
TEV - "The Resurrection Body" - 40 And there are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies; the beauty that belongs to heavenly bodies is different from the beauty that belongs to earthly bodies. 41 The sun has its own beauty, the moon another beauty, and the stars a different beauty; and even among stars there are different kinds of beauty.
B4 - Isa 40 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together:
26 Lift up your eyes
on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their
host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might,
for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
NRSV - 5 Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together,...
26 Lift up your eyes
on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers
them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty
in power, not one is missing.
TEV - "Words of Hope" - 3 A voice cries out, "Prepare in the wilderness a road for the LORD! Clear the way in the desert for our God! 4 Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. 5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind will see it. The LORD himself has promised this."
"Israel's Incomparable
God" - 25 To whom can the holy God be compared? Is there anyone
else like him? 26 Look up at the sky! Who created the stars you see?
The one who leads them out like an army, he knows how many there are and
calls each one by name! His power is so great -- not one of them is ever
missing!

KJV - 4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
10 For thou art great,
and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
NRSV - 4 Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
10 For you are great
and do wondrous things; you alone are God.
TEV - "A Prayer for Help" - 3 You are my God, so be merciful to me; I pray to you all day long. 4 Make your servant glad, O Lord, because my prayers go up to you. 5 You are good to us and forgiving, full of constant love for all who pray to you. 6 Listen, LORD, to my prayer; hear my cries for help. 7 I call to you in times of trouble, because you answer my prayers. 8 There is no god like you, O Lord, not one has done what you have done. 9 All the nations that you have created will come and bow down to you; they will praise your greatness. 10 You are mighty and do wonderful things; you alone are God.

KJV - 20 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. 21 Therefore let no man glory in men
NRSV - 20 ..."The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile." 21 So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours,
TEV - "Servants of God" - 18 No one should fool himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise by this world's standards, he should become a fool, in order to be really wise. 19 For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the scripture says, "God traps the wise in their cleverness"; 20 and another scripture says, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless." 21 No one, then, should boast about what men can do. Actually everything belongs to you: 22 Paul, Apollos, and Peter; this world, life and death, the present and the future -- all these are yours, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
B7 - Rom 1 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
25 Who changed the
truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than
the Creator, who is blessed for ever
NRSV - 20 Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; 21 for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools; 23 and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.
25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!...
TEV - "The Guilt of Mankind" - 18 God's anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. 19 God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them, for God himself made it plain. 20 Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all! 21 They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness. 22 They say they are wise, but they are fools; 23 instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles. 24 And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. 25 They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen. 26 Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. 27 In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing.
B8 - 2Co 6 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God;
17 Wherefore come out
from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean
thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye
shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
NRSV - 14 Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness?
16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore come out
from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean;
then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be your father, and you shall be
my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
TEV - "Warning against Pagan Influences" - 14 Do not try to work together as equals with unbelievers, for it cannot be done. How can right and wrong be partners? How can light and darkness live together? 15 How can Christ and the Devil agree? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 How can God's temple come to terms with pagan idols? For we are the temple of the living God! As God himself has said, "I will make my home with my people and live among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people." 17 And so the Lord says, "You must leave them and separate yourselves from them. Have nothing to do with what is unclean, and I will accept you. 18 I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

KJV - 11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me:
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. 14 Depart from evil, and do good;
22 The Lord redeemeth
the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
NRSV - 11 Come, O children, listen to me;...
13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Depart from evil, and do good;...
22 The LORD redeems
the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
TEV - "In Praise of God's Goodness" - 11 Come, my young friends, and listen to me, and I will teach you to honor the LORD. 12 Would you like to enjoy life? Do you want long life and happiness? 13 Then keep from speaking evil and from telling lies. 14 Turn away from evil and do good; strive for peace with all your heart. 15 The LORD watches over the righteous and listens to their cries; 16 but he opposes those who do evil, so that when they die, they are soon forgotten. 17 The righteous call to the LORD, and he listens; he rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. 19 The good man suffers many troubles, but the LORD saves him from them all; 20 the LORD preserves him completely; not one of his bones is broken. 21 Evil will kill the wicked; those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 The LORD will save his people; those who go to him for protection will be spared.
B10 - 1Ki 13 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
4 And it came to pass,
when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against
the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying,
Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up,
so that he could not pull it in again to him. 5 The altar also was rent,
and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the
man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6 And the king answered and
said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and
pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought
the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was
before.
NRSV - 1 While Jeroboam was standing by the altar to offer incense, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Bethel
4 When the king heard
what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched
out his hand from the altar, saying, "Seize him!" But the hand
that he stretched out against him withered so that he could not draw it
back to himself. 5 The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out
from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the
word of the LORD. 6 The king said to the man of God, "Entreat now the
favor of the LORD your God, and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored
to me." So the man of God entreated the LORD; and the king's hand was
restored to him, and became as it was before.
TEV - "Worship at Bethel Is Condemned" - 1 At the LORD's command a prophet from Judah went to Bethel and arrived there as Jeroboam stood at the altar to offer the sacrifice. 2 Following the LORD's command, the prophet denounced the altar: "O altar, altar, this is what the LORD says: A child, whose name will be Josiah, will be born to the family of David. He will slaughter on you the priests serving at the pagan altars who offer sacrifices on you, and he will burn human bones on you." 3 And the prophet went on to say, "This altar will fall apart, and the ashes on it will be scattered. Then you will know that the LORD has spoken through me." 4 When King Jeroboam heard this, he pointed at him and ordered, "Seize that man!" At once the king's arm became paralyzed so that he couldn't pull it back. 5 The altar suddenly fell apart and the ashes spilled to the ground, as the prophet had predicted in the name of the LORD. 6 King Jeroboam said to the prophet, "Please pray for me to the LORD your God, and ask him to heal my arm!" The prophet prayed to the LORD, and the king's arm was healed. 7 Then the king said to the prophet, "Come home with me and have something to eat. I will reward you for what you have done."

KJV - 2 be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
NRSV - 2 ...be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God -- what is good and acceptable and perfect.
TEV - "Life in God's Service" - 1 So then, my brothers, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer. 2 Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God -- what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.

KJV - 44 I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy:
NRSV - 44 ...I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy...
TEV - "Animals That May Be Eaten" - 39 If any animal that may be eaten dies, anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening. 40 And if anyone eats any part of the animal, he must wash his clothes, but he will still be unclean until evening; anyone who carries the dead body must wash his clothes, but he will still be unclean until evening. 41 You must not eat any of the small animals that move on the ground, 42 whether they crawl, or walk on four legs, or have many legs. 43 Do not make yourselves unclean by eating any of these. 44 I am the LORD your God, and you must keep yourselves holy, because I am holy. 45 I am the LORD who brought you out of Egypt so that I could be your God. You must be holy, because I am holy.

KJV - 15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ?
18 Flee fornication.
Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication
sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the
temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are
not your own?
NRSV - 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!
18 Shun fornication!
Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator
sins against the body itself. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that
you are not your own?
TEV - "Use Your Bodies for God's Glory" - 15 You know that your bodies are parts of the body of Christ. Shall I take a part of Christ's body and make it part of the body of a prostitute? Impossible! 16 Or perhaps you don't know that the man who joins his body to a prostitute becomes physically one with her? The scripture says quite plainly, "The two will become one body." 17 But he who joins himself to the Lord becomes spiritually one with him. 18 Avoid immorality.

KJV - 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
12 Let not sin therefore
reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto
sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead,
and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall
not have dominion over you:
NRSV - 1 What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?
12 Therefore, do not
let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their
passions. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness,
but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death
to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness.
14 For sin will have no dominion over you,...
TEV - "Dead to Sin but Alive in Union with Christ" - 1 What shall we say, then? Should we continue to live in sin so that God's grace will increase? 2 Certainly not! We have died to sin -- how then can we go on living in it? 3 For surely you know that when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. 4 By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.
12 Sin must no longer
rule in your mortal bodies, so that you obey the desires of your natural
self. 13 Nor must you surrender any part of yourselves to sin to be used
for wicked purposes. Instead, give yourselves to God, as those who have
been brought from death to life, and surrender your whole being to him to
be used for righteous purposes. 14 Sin must not be your master; for
you do not live under law but under God's grace.

KJV - 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory:
NRSV - 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor...
TEV - "Longing for God's House" - 10 One day spent in your Temple is better than a thousand anywhere else; I would rather stand at the gate of the house of my God than live in the homes of the wicked. 11 The LORD is our protector and glorious king, blessing us with kindness and honor. He does not refuse any good thing to those who do what is right. 12 LORD Almighty, how happy are those who trust in you!

KJV - 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord:
8 I have set the Lord
always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall
rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou
suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of
life:
NRSV - 2 I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord;...
8 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. 10 For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit. 11 You show me the path of life...
TEV - "A Prayer of Confidence" - 1 Protect me, O God; I trust in you for safety. 2 I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; all the good things I have come from you."
7 I praise the LORD,
because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. 8 I am
always aware of the LORD's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me.
9 And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, 10 because
you protect me from the power of death. I have served you faithfully, and
you will not abandon me to the world of the dead. 11 You will show me the
path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings
me pleasure forever.

KJV - 7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. 8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; 9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant. 10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
14 If a man die, shall
he live again?
NRSV - 7 "For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. 8 Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground, 9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant. 10 But mortals die, and are laid low; humans expire, and where are they?
14 If mortals die, will
they live again?...
TEV - "The First Dialogue" - 7 There is hope for a tree that has been cut down; it can come back to life and sprout. 8 Even though its roots grow old, and its stump dies in the ground, 9 with water it will sprout like a young plant. 10 But a man dies, and that is the end of him; he dies, and where is he then? 11 Like rivers that stop running, and lakes that go dry, 12 people die, never to rise. They will never wake up while the sky endures; they will never stir from their sleep. 13 I wish you would hide me in the world of the dead; let me be hidden until your anger is over, and then set a time to remember me. 14 If a man dies, can he come back to life? But I will wait for better times, wait till this time of trouble is ended. 15 Then you will call, and I will answer, and you will be pleased with me, your creature. 16 Then you will watch every step I take, but you will not keep track of my sins. 17 You will forgive them and put them away; you will wipe out all the wrongs I have done.

KJV - 35 some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
NRSV - 35 ...someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?"
TEV - "The Resurrection Body" - 35 Someone will ask, "How can the dead be raised to life? What kind of body will they have?" 36 You fool! When you plant a seed in the ground, it does not sprout to life unless it dies. 37 And what you plant is a bare seed, perhaps a grain of wheat or some other grain, not the full-bodied plant that will later grow up. 38 God provides that seed with the body he wishes; he gives each seed its own proper body. 39 And the flesh of living beings is not all the same kind of flesh; human beings have one kind of flesh, animals another, birds another, and fish another.
B19 - Luk 20 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 37 that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
NRSV - 37 ... the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."
TEV - "The Question about Rising from Death" - 34 Jesus answered them, "The men and women of this age marry, 35 but the men and women who are worthy to rise from death and live in the age to come will not then marry. 36 They will be like angels and cannot die. They are the sons of God, because they have risen from death. 37 And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' 38 He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive." 39 Some of the teachers of the Law spoke up, "A good answer, Teacher!" 40 For they did not dare ask him any more questions.

KJV - 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
14 But the natural
man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
NRSV - 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
14 Those who are unspiritual
do not receive the gifts of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to them,
and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
TEV - "God's Wisdom" - 9 However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only a person's own spirit within him that knows all about him; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us. 13 So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit. 14 Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them; they are nonsense to him, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis.

KJV - 1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
NRSV - 1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
TEV - "Living by Faith" - 1 For we know that when this tent we live in -- our body here on earth -- is torn down, God will have a house in heaven for us to live in, a home he himself has made, which will last forever. 2 And now we sigh, so great is our desire that our home which comes from heaven should be put on over us; 3 by being clothed with it we shall not be without a body. 4 While we live in this earthly tent, we groan with a feeling of oppression; it is not that we want to get rid of our earthly body, but that we want to have the heavenly one put on over us, so that what is mortal will be transformed by life. 5 God is the one who has prepared us for this change, and he gave us his Spirit as the guarantee of all that he has in store for us.

KJV - 1 Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. 7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. 9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
NRSV - 1 ...Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
TEV - "The Transfiguration" - 1 Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and the brothers James and John and led them up a high mountain where they were alone. 2 As they looked on, a change came over Jesus: his face was shining like the sun, and his clothes were dazzling white. 3 Then the three disciples saw Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. 4 So Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, "Lord, how good it is that we are here! If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was talking, a shining cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased -- listen to him!" 6 When the disciples heard the voice, they were so terrified that they threw themselves face downward on the ground. 7 Jesus came to them and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid!" 8 So they looked up and saw no one there but Jesus. 9 As they came down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Don't tell anyone about this vision you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from death." 10 Then the disciples asked Jesus, "Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah has to come first?" 11 "Elijah is indeed coming first," answered Jesus, "and he will get everything ready. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come and people did not recognize him, but treated him just as they pleased. In the same way they will also mistreat the Son of Man." 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

KJV - 23 the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
NRSV - 23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.
TEV - "Final Instructions and Greetings" - 19 Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; 20 do not despise inspired messages. 21 Put all things to the test: keep what is good 22 and avoid every kind of evil. 23 May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being -- spirit, soul, and body -- free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful. 25 Pray also for us, brothers. 26 Greet all the believers with a brotherly kiss. 27 I urge you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

NRSV - 12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.
TEV - "A Prayer for Help" - 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully; teach me to serve you with complete devotion. 12 I will praise you with all my heart, O Lord my God; I will proclaim your greatness forever. 13 How great is your constant love for me! You have saved me from the grave itself. 14 Proud men are coming against me, O God; a gang of cruel men is trying to kill me -- people who pay no attention to you. 15 But you, O Lord, are a merciful and loving God, always patient, always kind and faithful. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; strengthen me and save me, because I serve you just as my mother did.

King James Version (KJV) -- Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.
