GT - Psa 55 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee:...
NRSV - 22 Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you;...
TEV - "The Prayer of a Man Betrayed by a Friend" - 20 My former companion attacked his friends; he broke his promises. 21 His words were smoother than cream, but there was hatred in his heart; his words were as soothing as oil, but they cut like sharp swords. 22 Leave your troubles with the LORD, and he will defend you; he never lets honest men be defeated. 23 But you, O God, will bring those murderers and liars to their graves before half their life is over. As for me, I will trust in you.
RR1 - Psa 61 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
NRSV - 1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2 From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; 3 for you are my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. 4 Let me abide in your tent forever, find refuge under the shelter of your wings.
TEV - "A Prayer for Protection" - 1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer! 2 In despair and far from home I call to you! Take me to a safe refuge, 3 for you are my protector, my strong defense against my enemies. 4 Let me live in your sanctuary all my life; let me find safety under your wings. 5 You have heard my promises, O God, and you have given me what belongs to those who honor you. 6 Add many years to the king's life; let him live on and on! 7 May he rule forever in your presence, O God; protect him with your constant love and faithfulness. 8 So I will always sing praises to you, as I offer you daily what I have promised.
RR2 - Psa 119 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. 91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.
111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
116 Uphold me according
unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. 117 Hold
thou me up, and I shall be safe:...
NRSV - 90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast. 91 By your appointment they stand today, for all things are your servants.
111 Your decrees are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.
116 Uphold me according
to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope.
117 Hold me up, that I may be safe...
TEV - "Faith in the Law of the LORD" - 89 Your word, O LORD, will last forever; it is eternal in heaven. 90 Your faithfulness endures through all the ages; you have set the earth in place, and it remains. 91 All things remain to this day because of your command, because they are all your servants. 92 If your law had not been the source of my joy, I would have died from my sufferings. 93 I will never neglect your instructions, because by them you have kept me alive. 94 I am yours -- save me! I have tried to obey your commands. 95 Wicked men are waiting to kill me, but I will meditate on your laws.
"Light from the Law of the LORD" - 109 I am always ready to risk my life; I have not forgotten your law. 110 Wicked men lay a trap for me, but I have not disobeyed your commands. 111 Your commandments are my eternal possession; they are the joy of my heart. 112 I have decided to obey your laws until the day I die.
"Safety in the
Law of the LORD" - 113 I hate those who are not completely loyal to
you, but I love your law. 114 You are my defender and protector; I put my hope
in your promise. 115 Go away from me, you sinful people. I will obey the commands
of my God. 116 Give me strength, as you promised, and I shall live; don't
let me be disappointed in my hope! 117 Hold me, and I will be safe, and
I will always pay attention to your commands. 118 You reject everyone who disobeys
your laws; their deceitful schemes are useless. 119 You treat all the wicked
like rubbish, and so I love your instructions.

KJV - 26 ...God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:...
27 So God created man
in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created
he them.
New American Bible - 26 ...God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...
27 God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.
NRSV - 26 ...God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness;...
27 So God created humankind
in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created
them.
TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small."
27 So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, 28 blessed them, and said, "Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. 29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food" -- and it was done. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came -- that was the sixth day.
B2 - Isa 43 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?
21 This people have
I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.
NRSV - 10 You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.
13 I am God, and also henceforth I am He; there is no one who can deliver from my hand; I work and who can hinder it?
21 the people whom I
formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.
TEV - "Israel Is the LORD's Witness" - 10 "People of Israel, you are my witnesses; I chose you to be my servant, so that you would know me and believe in me and understand that I am the only God. Besides me there is no other god; there never was and never will be. 11 "I alone am the LORD, the only one who can save you. 12 I predicted what would happen, and then I came to your aid. No foreign god has ever done this; you are my witnesses. 13 I am God and always will be. No one can escape from my power; no one can change what I do."
"Escape from
Babylon" - 18 But the LORD says, "Do not cling to events of
the past or dwell on what happened long ago. 19 Watch for the new thing
I am going to do. It is happening already -- you can see it now! I will
make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.
20 Even the wild animals will honor me; jackals and ostriches will praise
me when I make rivers flow in the desert to give water to my chosen people.
21 They are the people I made for myself, and they will sing my praises!"
B3 - Psa 18 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust;...
25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright; 26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure;...
30 As for God, his way is perfect:...
32 It is God that girdeth
me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
NRSV - 1 I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,...
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless you show yourself blameless; 26 with the pure you show yourself pure;...
30 This God -- his way is perfect;...
32 the God who girded
me with strength, and made my way safe.
TEV - "David's Song of Victory" - 1 How I love you, LORD! You are my defender. 2 The LORD is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe. 3 I call to the LORD, and he saves me from my enemies. Praise the LORD!
25 O LORD, you are
faithful to those who are faithful to you; completely good to those who
are perfect. 26 You are pure to those who are pure, but hostile to those
who are wicked. 27 You save those who are humble, but you humble those who
are proud. 28 O LORD, you give me light; you dispel my darkness. 29 You
give me strength to attack my enemies and power to overcome their defenses.
30 This God -- how perfect are his deeds! How dependable his words!
He is like a shield for all who seek his protection. 31 The LORD alone is
God; God alone is our defense. 32 He is the God who makes me strong,
who makes my pathway safe. 33 He makes me sure-footed as a deer; he
keeps me safe on the mountains. 34 He trains me for battle, so that I can
use the strongest bow.

KJV - 15 ...I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
NRSV - 15 ...I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.
TEV - "The Prayer of an Innocent Man" - 13 Come, LORD! Oppose my enemies and defeat them! Save me from the wicked by your sword; 14 save me from those who in this life have all they want. Punish them with the sufferings you have stored up for them; may there be enough for their children and some left over for their children's children! 15 But I will see you, because I have done no wrong; and when I awake, your presence will fill me with joy.
Thy form recalls Num 12:8, where Yahweh [Jehovah] states that Moses has spoken to him face to face and has seen his "form." It is doubtful the psalmist thought of Yahweh as having a material body; so TEV "your presence"; NEB "a vision of thee"; NJV "the vision of You." The Septuagint translated "and I shall be filled at the appearance of your glory." TEV's "your presence" may need to be rendered "where you are." In some languages line 15b may be rendered idiomatically as "When I awake, my heart will sit cool because I am in the place where you are" or, nonfiguratively, "When I awake, I will be happy because I am near you."

B5 - Joh 8 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
56 Your father Abraham
rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews
unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham
was, I am.
NRSV - [[1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.]]
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
56 Your ancestor Abraham
rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad." 57 Then
the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you
seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you,
before Abraham was, I am."
TEV - "The Woman Caught in Adultery" - 1 [[Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 "Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?" 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.]]
"Jesus the Light of the World" - 12 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. "I am the light of the world," he said. "Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness." 13 The Pharisees said to him, "Now you are testifying on your own behalf; what you say proves nothing."
"Jesus and Abraham" - 54 Jesus answered, "If I were to honor myself, that honor would be worth nothing. The one who honors me is my Father -- the very one you say is your God. 55 You have never known him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see the time of my coming; he saw it and was glad." 57 They said to him, "You are not even fifty years old -- and you have seen Abraham?"58 "I am telling you the truth," Jesus replied. "Before Abraham was born, "I Am'." 59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.
B6 - Luk 4 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. 40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
NRSV - 38 After leaving the synagogue he entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her. 39 Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. 40 As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
TEV - "Jesus Heals Many People" - 38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's home. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her. 39 He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them. 40 After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all. 41 Demons also went out from many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.

KJV - 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
NRSV - 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our ancestors have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old:
TEV - "A Prayer for Protection" - 1 With our own ears we have heard it, O God -- our ancestors have told us about it, about the great things you did in their time, in the days of long ago: 2 how you yourself drove out the heathen and established your people in their land; how you punished the other nations and caused your own to prosper.
B8 - Psa 77 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.
NRSV - 15 With your strong arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
TEV - "Comfort in Time of Distress" - 11 I will remember your great deeds, LORD; I will recall the wonders you did in the past. 12 I will think about all that you have done; I will meditate on all your mighty acts. 13 Everything you do, O God, is holy. No god is as great as you. 14 You are the God who works miracles; you showed your might among the nations. 15 By your power you saved your people, the descendants of Jacob and of Joseph.
B9 - Heb 3 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
NRSV - 14 For we have become partners of Christ, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end.
TEV - "A Rest for God's People" - 12 My fellow believers, be careful that no one among you has a heart so evil and unbelieving that he will turn away from the living God. 13 Instead, in order that none of you be deceived by sin and become stubborn, you must help one another every day, as long as the word "Today" in the scripture applies to us. 14 For we are all partners with Christ if we hold firmly to the end the confidence we had at the beginning. 15 This is what the scripture says: "If you hear God's voice today, do not be stubborn, as your ancestors were when they rebelled against God."
B10 - Gen 37 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit:...
28 Then there passed
by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the
pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver:...
NRSV - 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; 24 and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.
28 When some Midianite
traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and
sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph
to Egypt.
TEV - "Joseph and His Brothers" - 1 Jacob continued to live in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived, 2 and this is the story of Jacob's family. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, took care of the sheep and goats with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's concubines. He brought bad reports to his father about what his brothers were doing. 3 Jacob loved Joseph more than all his other sons, because he had been born to him when he was old. He made a long robe with full sleeves for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than he loved them, they hated their brother so much that they would not speak to him in a friendly manner.
"Joseph Is Sold
and Taken to Egypt" - 21 Reuben heard them and tried to save Joseph.
"Let's not kill him," he said. 22 "Just throw him into this
well in the wilderness, but don't hurt him." He said this, planning
to save him from them and send him back to his father. 23 When Joseph
came up to his brothers, they ripped off his long robe with full sleeves.
24 Then they took him and threw him into the well, which was dry. 25
While they were eating, they suddenly saw a group of Ishmaelites traveling
from Gilead to Egypt. Their camels were loaded with spices and resins. 26
Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain by killing our brother
and covering up the murder? 27 Let's sell him to these Ishmaelites. Then
we won't have to hurt him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and
blood." His brothers agreed, 28 and when some Midianite traders
came by, the brothers pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him for twenty
pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
B11 - Gen 39 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither. 2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
4 And Joseph found
grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his
house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
NRSV - 1 Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; he was in the house of his Egyptian master.
4 So Joseph found favor
in his sight and attended him; he made him overseer of his house and put
him in charge of all that he had.
TEV - "Joseph and Potiphar" - 1 Now the Ishmaelites had taken Joseph to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, one of the king's officers, who was the captain of the palace guard. 2 The LORD was with Joseph and made him successful. He lived in the house of his Egyptian master, 3 who saw that the LORD was with Joseph and had made him successful in everything he did. 4 Potiphar was pleased with him and made him his personal servant; so he put him in charge of his house and everything he owned. 5 From then on, because of Joseph the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian and everything that he had in his house and in his fields.

KJV - 6 Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
20 O keep my soul,
and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. 21 Let
integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.
NRSV - 6 Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
20 O guard my life,
and deliver me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you.
TEV - "A Prayer for Guidance and Protection" - 4 Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. 5 Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you. 6 Remember, O LORD, your kindness and constant love which you have shown from long ago. 7 Forgive the sins and errors of my youth. In your constant love and goodness, remember me, LORD!
15 I look to the LORD
for help at all times, and he rescues me from danger. 16 Turn to me, LORD,
and be merciful to me, because I am lonely and weak. 17 Relieve me of my
worries and save me from all my troubles. 18 Consider my distress and suffering
and forgive all my sins. 19 See how many enemies I have; see how much they
hate me. 20 Protect me and save me; keep me from defeat. I come to you
for safety. 21 May my goodness and honesty preserve me, because I trust
in you.

KJV - 7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. 17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: 18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
20 And Joseph's master
took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners
were bound: and he was there in the prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph,
and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of
the prison.
NRSV - 7 And after a time his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, "Lie with me." 8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, with me here, my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand. 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
12 she caught hold of his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
16 Then she kept his garment by her until his master came home, 17 and she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to insult me; 18 but as soon as I raised my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me, and fled outside."
20 And Joseph's master
took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners
were confined; he remained there in prison. 21 But the LORD was with Joseph
and showed him steadfast love; he gave him favor in the sight of the chief
jailer.
TEV - "Joseph and Potiphar's Wife" - 6 Potiphar turned over everything he had to the care of Joseph and did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Joseph was well-built and good-looking, 7 and after a while his master's wife began to desire Joseph and asked him to go to bed with her. 8 He refused and said to her, "Look, my master does not have to concern himself with anything in the house, because I am here. He has put me in charge of everything he has. 9 I have as much authority in this house as he has, and he has not kept back anything from me except you. How then could I do such an immoral thing and sin against God?" 10 Although she asked Joseph day after day, he would not go to bed with her. 11 But one day when Joseph went into the house to do his work, none of the house servants was there. 12 She caught him by his robe and said, "Come to bed with me." But he escaped and ran outside, leaving his robe in her hand. 13 When she saw that he had left his robe and had run out of the house, 14 she called to her house servants and said, "Look at this! This Hebrew that my husband brought to the house is insulting us. He came into my room and tried to rape me, but I screamed as loud as I could. 15 When he heard me scream, he ran outside, leaving his robe beside me." 16 She kept his robe with her until Joseph's master came home. 17 Then she told him the same story: "That Hebrew slave that you brought here came into my room and insulted me. 18 But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his robe beside me." 19 Joseph's master was furious 20 and had Joseph arrested and put in the prison where the king's prisoners were kept, and there he stayed. 21 But the LORD was with Joseph and blessed him, so that the jailer was pleased with him. 22 He put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and made him responsible for everything that was done in the prison. 23 The jailer did not have to look after anything for which Joseph was responsible, because the LORD was with Joseph and made him succeed in everything he did.

KJV - 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
37 Nay, in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
NRSV - 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
37 No, in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
TEV - "God's Love in Christ Jesus" - 31 In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 Certainly not God, who did not even keep back his own Son, but offered him for us all! He gave us his Son -- will he not also freely give us all things? 33 Who will accuse God's chosen people? God himself declares them not guilty! 34 Who, then, will condemn them? Not Christ Jesus, who died, or rather, who was raised to life and is at the right side of God, pleading with him for us! 35 Who, then, can separate us from the love of Christ? Can trouble do it, or hardship or persecution or hunger or poverty or danger or death? 36 As the scripture says, "For your sake we are in danger of death at all times; we are treated like sheep that are going to be slaughtered." 37 No, in all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us! 38 For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, 39 neither the world above nor the world below -- there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.

KJV - 18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom:...
NRSV - 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom...
TEV - "Personal Words" - 16 No one stood by me the first time I defended myself; all deserted me. May God not count it against them! 17 But the Lord stayed with me and gave me strength, so that I was able to proclaim the full message for all the Gentiles to hear; and I was rescued from being sentenced to death. 18 And the Lord will rescue me from all evil and take me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever! Amen.

B16 - Gen 41 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon:...
15 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: 30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;
35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.
39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: 40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.
54 And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
57 And all countries
came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn;...
NRSV - 14 Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was hurriedly brought out of the dungeon...
15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." 16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, "It is not I; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer."
29 There will come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. 30 After them there will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine will consume the land.
35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and lay up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it.
39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command; only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you."
54 and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in every country, but throughout the land of Egypt there was bread.
57 Moreover, all the
world came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain,...
TEV - "Joseph Interprets the King's Dreams" - 14 The king sent for Joseph, and he was immediately brought from the prison. After he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came into the king's presence. 15 The king said to him, "I have had a dream, and no one can explain it. I have been told that you can interpret dreams." 16 Joseph answered, "I cannot, Your Majesty, but God will give a favorable interpretation."
29 There will be seven years of great plenty in all the land of Egypt. 30 After that, there will be seven years of famine, and all the good years will be forgotten, because the famine will ruin the country. 31 The time of plenty will be entirely forgotten, because the famine which follows will be so terrible. 32 The repetition of your dream means that the matter is fixed by God and that he will make it happen in the near future. 33 "Now you should choose some man with wisdom and insight and put him in charge of the country. 34 You must also appoint other officials and take a fifth of the crops during the seven years of plenty. 35 Order them to collect all the food during the good years that are coming, and give them authority to store up grain in the cities and guard it. 36 The food will be a reserve supply for the country during the seven years of famine which are going to come on Egypt. In this way the people will not starve."
"Joseph Is Made Governor over Egypt" - 37 The king and his officials approved this plan, 38 and he said to them, "We will never find a better man than Joseph, a man who has God's spirit in him." 39 The king said to Joseph, "God has shown you all this, so it is obvious that you have greater wisdom and insight than anyone else. 40 I will put you in charge of my country, and all my people will obey your orders. Your authority will be second only to mine. 41 I now appoint you governor over all Egypt."
53 The seven years
of plenty that the land of Egypt had enjoyed came to an end, 54 and the
seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in
every other country, but there was food throughout Egypt. 55 When the
Egyptians began to be hungry, they cried out to the king for food. So he
ordered them to go to Joseph and do what he told them. 56 The famine grew
worse and spread over the whole country, so Joseph opened all the storehouses
and sold grain to the Egyptians. 57 People came to Egypt from all over
the world to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe everywhere.

KJV - 19 ...my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
NRSV - 19 ...my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
TEV - "Thanks for the Gift" - 14 But it was very good of you to help me in my troubles. 15 You Philippians know very well that when I left Macedonia in the early days of preaching the Good News, you were the only church to help me; you were the only ones who shared my profits and losses. 16 More than once when I needed help in Thessalonica, you sent it to me. 17 It is not that I just want to receive gifts; rather, I want to see profit added to your account. 18 Here, then, is my receipt for everything you have given me -- and it has been more than enough! I have all I need now that Epaphroditus has brought me all your gifts. They are like a sweet-smelling offering to God, a sacrifice which is acceptable and pleasing to him. 19 And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs.

KJV - 1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? 2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came:...
8 And Joseph knew his
brethren, but they knew not him.
NRSV - 1 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why do you keep looking at one another? 2 I have heard," he said, "that there is grain in Egypt; go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die."
5 Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to buy grain,...
8 Although Joseph had
recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.
TEV - "Joseph's Brothers Go to Egypt to Buy Grain" - 1 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why don't you do something? 2 I hear that there is grain in Egypt; go there and buy some to keep us from starving to death." 3 So Joseph's ten half brothers went to buy grain in Egypt, 4 but Jacob did not send Joseph's full brother Benjamin with them, because he was afraid that something might happen to him. 5 The sons of Jacob came with others to buy grain, because there was famine in the land of Canaan. 6 Joseph, as governor of the land of Egypt, was selling grain to people from all over the world. So Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the ground. 7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he acted as if he did not know them. He asked them harshly, "Where do you come from?" "We have come from Canaan to buy food," they answered. 8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. 9 He remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them and said, "You are spies; you have come to find out where our country is weak."

KJV - 1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him;...
2 And he wept aloud:...
4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
7 And God sent me before
you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by
a great deliverance.
NRSV - 1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him,...
2 And he wept ... loudly...
4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
7 God sent me before
you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many
survivors.
TEV - "Joseph Tells His Brothers Who He Is" - 1 Joseph was no longer able to control his feelings in front of his servants, so he ordered them all to leave the room. No one else was with him when Joseph told his brothers who he was. 2 He cried with such loud sobs that the Egyptians heard it, and the news was taken to the king's palace. 3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But when his brothers heard this, they were so terrified that they could not answer. 4 Then Joseph said to them, "Please come closer." They did, and he said, "I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 Now do not be upset or blame yourselves because you sold me here. It was really God who sent me ahead of you to save people's lives. 6 This is only the second year of famine in the land; there will be five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor reaping. 7 God sent me ahead of you to rescue you in this amazing way and to make sure that you and your descendants survive. 8 So it was not really you who sent me here, but God. He has made me the king's highest official. I am in charge of his whole country; I am the ruler of all Egypt.

KJV - 10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?...
NRSV - 10 Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us?...
TEV - "The People's Unfaithfulness to God" - 10 Don't we all have the same father? Didn't the same God create us all? Then why do we break our promises to one another, and why do we despise the covenant that God made with our ancestors? 11 The people of Judah have broken their promise to God and done a horrible thing in Jerusalem and all over the country. They have defiled the Temple which the LORD loves. Men have married women who worship foreign gods. 12 May the LORD remove from the community of Israel those who did this, and never again let them participate in the offerings our nation brings to the LORD Almighty.

NRSV - 17 May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun. May all nations be blessed in him; may they pronounce him happy.
TEV - "A Prayer for the King" - 17 May the king's name never be forgotten; may his fame last as long as the sun. May all nations ask God to bless them as he has blessed the king.

NRSV - 23 Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
TEV - "Final Greetings" - 21 Tychicus, our dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord's work, will give you all the news about me, so that you may know how I am getting along. 22 That is why I am sending him to you -- to tell you how all of us are getting along and to encourage you. 23 May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give to all Christian brothers peace and love with faith. 24 May God's grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with undying love.

King James Version (KJV) -- Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.
