GT - Rom 13 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 11 ...now it is high time to awake out of sleep:...
NRSV - 11 ...it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep...
TEV - "Duties toward One Another" - 11 You must do this, because you know that the time has come for you to wake up from your sleep. For the moment when we will be saved is closer now than it was when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over, day is almost here. Let us stop doing the things that belong to the dark, and let us take up weapons for fighting in the light. 13 Let us conduct ourselves properly, as people who live in the light of day -- no orgies or drunkenness, no immorality or indecency, no fighting or jealousy.14 But take up the weapons of the Lord Jesus Christ, and stop paying attention to your sinful nature and satisfying its desires.
RR1 - Eph 1 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
17 That the God of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit
of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding
being enlightened;...
NRSV - 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.
6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
17 I pray that the God of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom
and revelation as you come to know him, 18 ...with the eyes of your heart enlightened,...
TEV - "Spiritual Blessings in Christ" - 3 Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! For in our union with Christ he has blessed us by giving us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world. 4 Even before the world was made, God had already chosen us to be his through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before him. Because of his love 5 God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would make us his sons -- this was his pleasure and purpose. 6 Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift he gave us in his dear Son!
"Paul's Prayer"
- 15 For this reason, ever since I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and
your love for all of God's people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks to God
for you. I remember you in my prayers 17 and ask the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the glorious Father, to give you the Spirit, who will make you wise
and reveal God to you, so that you will know him. 18 I ask that your minds may
be opened to see his light, so that you will know what is the hope to which
he has called you, how rich are the wonderful blessings he promises his people,
19 and how very great is his power at work in us who believe. This power working
in us is the same as the mighty strength 20 which he used when he raised Christ
from death and seated him at his right side in the heavenly world.
RR2 - Eph 5 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
14 Wherefore he saith,
Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee
light.
NRSV - 8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light --
10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.
14 for everything that becomes
visible is light. Therefore it says, "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you."
TEV - "Living in the Light" - 8 You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord's people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light, 9 for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light. (12 It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.) 13 And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed; 14 for anything that is clearly revealed becomes light. That is why it is said, "Wake up, sleeper, and rise from death, and Christ will shine on you."

B1 - Gen 1 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:...
31 And God
saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good...
NRSV - 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it;...
31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good...
TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 1 In the beginning, when God created the universe, 2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water. 3 Then God commanded, "Let there be light" -- and light appeared. 4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness, 5 and he named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening passed and morning came -- that was the first day.
26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small." 27 So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, 28 blessed them, and said, "Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. 29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food" -- and it was done. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came -- that was the sixth day.
B2 - Gen 2 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
NRSV - 6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground -- 7 then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 4b When the LORD God made the universe, 5 there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 6 but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground. 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.

KJV - 1 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion;...
2 Shake thyself from
the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands
of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.
NRSV - 1 Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion!...
2 Shake yourself from the dust, rise up, O captive Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter Zion!
TEV - "God Will Rescue Jerusalem" - 1 Jerusalem, be strong and great again! Holy city of God, clothe yourself with splendor! The heathen will never enter your gates again. 2 Shake yourself free, Jerusalem! Rise from the dust and sit on your throne! Undo the chains that bind you, captive people of Zion!
B4 - Rom 1 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
25 Who changed the
truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than
the Creator, who is blessed for ever...
NRSV - 20 Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; 21 for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools; 23 and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.
25 because they exchanged
the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather
than the Creator, who is blessed forever!...
TEV - "The Guilt of Mankind" - 18 God's anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. 19 God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them, for God himself made it plain. 20 Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all! 21 They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness. 22 They say they are wise, but they are fools; 23 instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles. 24 And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. 25 They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen. 26 Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. 27 In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing.

KJV - 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
NRSV - 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken."
TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 21 Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 23 Then the man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind -- Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. "Woman' is her name because she was taken out of man." 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

KJV - 8 ...They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God:
NRSV - 8 ...it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God,...
TEV - "God and His People" - 8 This means that the children born in the usual way are not the children of God; instead, the children born as a result of God's promise are regarded as the true descendants. 9 For God's promise was made in these words: "At the right time I will come back, and Sarah will have a son."
B7 - Isa 2 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.
22 Cease ye from man,
whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
NRSV - 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD!
22 Turn away from mortals,
who have only breath in their nostrils, for of what account are they?
TEV - "Everlasting Peace" - 4 He will settle disputes among great nations. They will hammer their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nations will never again go to war, never prepare for battle again. 5 Now, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light which the LORD gives us!
"Arrogance
Will Be Destroyed" - 19 People will hide in caves in the rocky
hills or dig holes in the ground to try to escape from the LORD's anger
and to hide from his power and glory, when he comes to shake the earth.
20 When that day comes, they will throw away the gold and silver idols they
have made, and abandon them to the moles and the bats. 21 When the LORD
comes to shake the earth, people will hide in holes and caves in the rocky
hills to try to escape from his anger and to hide from his power and glory.
22 Put no more confidence in mortal men. What are they worth?

KJV - 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
NRSV - 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, "You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 but God said, "You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die."' 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; 5 for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. 8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 1 Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the LORD God had made. The snake asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?" 2 "We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden," the woman answered, 3 "except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die." 4 The snake replied, "That's not true; you will not die. 5 God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God and know what is good and what is bad." 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 7 As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. 8 That evening they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, and they hid from him among the trees. 9 But the LORD God called out to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." 11 "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?"

KJV - 12 The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
NRSV - 12 The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the faithless.
TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 8 If you plant the seeds of injustice, disaster will spring up, and your oppression of others will end. 9 Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it. 10 Get rid of a conceited person, and then there will be no more arguments, quarreling, or name-calling. 11 If you love purity of heart and graciousness of speech, the king will be your friend. 12 The LORD sees to it that truth is kept safe by disproving the words of liars. 13 The lazy man stays at home; he says a lion might get him if he goes outside. 14 Adultery is a trap -- it catches those with whom the LORD is angry.

KJV - 6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
NRSV - 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
TEV - "The Rewards of Wisdom" - 1 Son, learn what I teach you and never forget what I tell you to do. 2 Listen to what is wise and try to understand it. 3 Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight. 4 Look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure. 5 If you do, you will know what it means to fear the LORD and you will succeed in learning about God. 6 It is the LORD who gives wisdom; from him come knowledge and understanding. 7 He provides help and protection for righteous, honest men. 8 He protects those who treat others fairly, and guards those who are devoted to him.

KJV - 7 ...God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
NRSV - 7 ...God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
TEV - "Thanksgiving and Encouragement" - 3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did. I thank him as I remember you always in my prayers night and day. 4 I remember your tears, and I want to see you very much, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I remember the sincere faith you have, the kind of faith that your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice also had. I am sure that you have it also. 6 For this reason I remind you to keep alive the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control.

KJV - 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
18 There is no fear
in love; but perfect love casteth out fear:...
NRSV - 16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
18 There is no fear
in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment,
and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.
TEV - "God Is Love" - 15 If anyone declares that Jesus is the Son of God, he lives in union with God and God lives in union with him. 16 And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love, and whoever lives in love lives in union with God and God lives in union with him. 17 Love is made perfect in us in order that we may have courage on the Judgment Day; and we will have it because our life in this world is the same as Christ's. 18 There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.

TEV - "God's Assurance to Israel" - 8 "But you, Israel my servant, you are the people that I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham, my friend. 9 I brought you from the ends of the earth; I called you from its farthest corners and said to you, "You are my servant.' I did not reject you, but chose you. 10 Do not be afraid -- I am with you! I am your God -- let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.

TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 12 The man answered, "The woman you put here with me gave me the fruit, and I ate it." 13 The LORD God asked the woman, "Why did you do this?" She replied, "The snake tricked me into eating it."
"God Pronounces
Judgment" - 14 Then the LORD God said to the snake, "You
will be punished for this; you alone of all the animals must bear this curse:
From now on you will crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust
as long as you live. 15 I will make you and the woman hate each other; her
offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your
head, and you will bite their heel." 16 And he said to the woman, "I
will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth.
In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will
be subject to him."

KJV - 22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
NRSV - 22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 20 A good man's words are like pure silver; a wicked man's ideas are worthless. 21 A good man's words will benefit many people, but you can kill yourself with stupidity. 22 It is the LORD's blessing that makes you wealthy. Hard work can make you no richer. 23 It is foolish to enjoy doing wrong. Intelligent people take pleasure in wisdom. 24 The righteous get what they want, but the wicked will get what they fear most. 25 Storms come, and the wicked are blown away, but honest people are always safe.

KJV - 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
31 Give her of the
fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
NRSV - 10 A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
28 Her children rise up and call her happy;
31 Give her a share
in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates.
TEV - "The Capable Wife" - 10 How hard it is to find a capable wife! She is worth far more than jewels! 11 Her husband puts his confidence in her, and he will never be poor. 12 As long as she lives, she does him good and never harm. 13 She keeps herself busy making wool and linen cloth. 14 She brings home food from out-of-the-way places, as merchant ships do. 15 She gets up before daylight to prepare food for her family and to tell her servant girls what to do. 16 She looks at land and buys it, and with money she has earned she plants a vineyard. 17 She is a hard worker, strong and industrious. 18 She knows the value of everything she makes, and works late into the night. 19 She spins her own thread and weaves her own cloth. 20 She is generous to the poor and needy. 21 She doesn't worry when it snows, because her family has warm clothing. 22 She makes bedspreads and wears clothes of fine purple linen. 23 Her husband is well known, one of the leading citizens. 24 She makes clothes and belts, and sells them to merchants. 25 She is strong and respected and not afraid of the future. 26 She speaks with a gentle wisdom. 27 She is always busy and looks after her family's needs. 28 Her children show their appreciation, and her husband praises her. 29 He says, "Many women are good wives, but you are the best of them all." 30 Charm is deceptive and beauty disappears, but a woman who honors the LORD should be praised. 31 Give her credit for all she does. She deserves the respect of everyone.

KJV - 2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
NRSV - 2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.
TEV - "More of Solomon's Proverbs" - 1 Praise for a fool is out of place, like snow in summer or rain at harvest time. 2 Curses cannot hurt you unless you deserve them. They are like birds that fly by and never light. 3 You have to whip a horse, you have to bridle a donkey, and you have to beat a fool. 4 If you answer a silly question, you are just as silly as the person who asked it. 5 Give a silly answer to a silly question, and the one who asked it will realize that he's not as smart as he thinks. 6 If you let a fool deliver a message, you might as well cut off your own feet; you are asking for trouble. 7 A fool can use a proverb about as well as a crippled man can use his legs.

KJV - 9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord:...
13 As one whom his
mother comforteth, so will I comfort you;...
NRSV - 9 Shall I open the womb and not deliver? says the LORD;...
13 As a mother comforts
her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
TEV - "The LORD Judges the Nations" - 7 "My holy city is like a woman who suddenly gives birth to a child without ever going into labor. 8 Has anyone ever seen or heard of such a thing? Has a nation ever been born in a day? Zion will not have to suffer long, before the nation is born. 9 Do not think that I will bring my people to the point of birth and not let them be born." The LORD has spoken. 10 Rejoice with Jerusalem; be glad for her, all you that love this city! Rejoice with her now, all you that have mourned for her! 11 You will enjoy her prosperity, like a child at its mother's breast. 12 The LORD says, "I will bring you lasting prosperity; the wealth of the nations will flow to you like a river that never goes dry. You will be like a child that is nursed by its mother, carried in her arms, and treated with love. 13 I will comfort you in Jerusalem, as a mother comforts her child. 14 When you see this happen, you will be glad; it will make you strong and healthy. Then you will know that I, the LORD, help those who obey me, and I show my anger against my enemies." 15 The LORD will come with fire. He will ride on the wings of a storm to punish those he is angry with. 16 By fire and sword he will punish all the people of the world whom he finds guilty -- and many will be put to death.

KJV - 1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
12 Then spake Jesus
again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth
me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
NRSV - 1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 [[ Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.
12 Again Jesus spoke
to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will
never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
TEV - "The Woman Caught in Adultery" - 1 {Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 "Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?" 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.
"Jesus the
Light of the World" - 12 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again.
"I am the light of the world," he said. "Whoever follows
me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness."
13 The Pharisees said to him, "Now you are testifying on your own behalf;
what you say proves nothing."

KJV - 1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
NRSV - 1 After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
11 Soon afterwards he
went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with
him. 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being
carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with
her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion
for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he came forward
and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young
man, I say to you, rise!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak,
and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and they glorified
God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God
has looked favorably on his people!"
TEV - "Jesus Heals a Roman Officer's Servant" - 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum. 2 A Roman officer there had a servant who was very dear to him; the man was sick and about to die. 3 When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant. 4 They came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, "This man really deserves your help. 5 He loves our people and he himself built a synagogue for us."
"Jesus Raises
a Widow's Son" - 11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a town named
Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12 Just as he arrived
at the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out. The dead man
was the only son of a woman who was a widow, and a large crowd from the
town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity
for her, and he said to her, "Don't cry." 14 Then he walked over
and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, "Young
man! Get up, I tell you!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk,
and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They all were filled with fear
and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us!" they
said; "God has come to save his people!" 17 This news about
Jesus went out through all the country and the surrounding territory.

KJV - 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
NRSV - 22 for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ.
TEV - "Our Resurrection" - 20 But the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised. 21 For just as death came by means of a man, in the same way the rising from death comes by means of a man. 22 For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. 23 But each one will be raised in his proper order: Christ, first of all; then, at the time of his coming, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come; Christ will overcome all spiritual rulers, authorities, and powers, and will hand over the Kingdom to God the Father. 25 For Christ must rule until God defeats all enemies and puts them under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be defeated will be death.
B23 - 1Th 5 | Bible Lesson | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day:...
6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly;...
28 The grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ be with you...
NRSV - 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day;...
21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good;
23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
28 The grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
TEV - "Be Ready for the Lord's Coming" - 1 There is no need to write you, brothers, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. 3 When people say, "Everything is quiet and safe," then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. 5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober.
"Final Instructions
and Greetings" - 19 Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; 20 do not
despise inspired messages. 21 Put all things to the test: keep what is
good 22 and avoid every kind of evil. 23 May the God who gives us
peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being -- spirit, soul,
and body -- free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful. 25 Pray also for
us, brothers. 26 Greet all the believers with a brotherly kiss. 27 I urge
you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

King James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

Strong's numbers |
Strong's numbers identify the Hebrew (OT) or Greek words (NT) from which the English words were translated. In BibleTexts.com footnotes, the numbers are enclosed in less-than and greater-than signs < >. Keep in mind that the Strong's numbers in the KJV do not necessarily represent the Hebrew and Greek words in the original texts. They represent the Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated. The following toolbars with resources based upon Strong's numbers:
