KJV - 5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies
NRSV - 5 A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.
TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 1 Homes are made by the wisdom of women, but are destroyed by foolishness. 2 Be honest and you show that you have reverence for the LORD; be dishonest and you show that you do not. 3 A fool's pride makes him talk too much; a wise man's words protect him. 4 Without any oxen to pull the plow your barn will be empty, but with them it will be full of grain. 5 A reliable witness always tells the truth, but an unreliable one tells nothing but lies. 6 Conceited people can never become wise, but intelligent people learn easily.

21 Yea, they opened
their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.
NRSV - 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me about things I do not know.
21 They open wide their
mouths against me; they say, "Aha, Aha, our eyes have seen it."
TEV - "A Prayer for Help" - 11 Evil men testify against me and accuse me of crimes I know nothing about. 12 They pay me back evil for good, and I sink in despair. 13 But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning; I deprived myself of food; I prayed with my head bowed low, 14 as I would pray for a friend or a brother. I went around bent over in mourning, as one who mourns for his mother.
20 They do not speak in
a friendly way; instead they invent all kinds of lies about peace-loving people.
21 They accuse me, shouting, "We saw what you did!" 22 But
you, O LORD, have seen this. So don't be silent, Lord; don't keep yourself far
away! 23 Rouse yourself, O Lord, and defend me; rise up, my God, and plead my
cause. 24 You are righteous, O LORD, so declare me innocent; don't let my enemies
gloat over me. 25 Don't let them say to themselves, "We are rid of him!
That's just what we wanted!"

KJV - 2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. 5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. 9 O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord hath been mindful
of us: he will bless us;
NRSV - 2 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" 3 Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. 6 They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. 7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; they make no sound in their throats. 8 Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them. 9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
12 The LORD has been mindful
of us; he will bless us;...
TEV - "The One True God" - 2 Why should the nations ask us, "Where is your God?" 3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever he wishes. 4 Their gods are made of silver and gold, formed by human hands. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see. 6 They have ears, but cannot hear, and noses, but cannot smell. 7 They have hands, but cannot feel, and feet, but cannot walk; they cannot make a sound. 8 May all who made them and who trust in them become like the idols they have made. 9 Trust in the LORD, you people of Israel. He helps you and protects you. 10 Trust in the LORD, you priests of God. He helps you and protects you. 11 Trust in the LORD, all you that worship him. He helps you and protects you. 12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us; he will bless the people of Israel and all the priests of God. 13 He will bless everyone who honors him, the great and the small alike. 14 May the LORD give you children -- you and your descendants! 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

KJV - 7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance?...
NRSV - 7 Look at what is before your eyes...
TEV - "Paul Defends His Ministry" - 7 You are looking at the outward appearance of things. Is there someone there who reckons himself to belong to Christ? Well, let him think again about himself, because we belong to Christ just as much as he does. 8 For I am not ashamed, even if I have boasted somewhat too much about the authority that the Lord has given us -- authority to build you up, not to tear you down. 9 I do not want it to appear that I am trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 Someone will say, "Paul's letters are severe and strong, but when he is with us in person, he is weak, and his words are nothing!" 11 Such a person must understand that there is no difference between what we write in our letters when we are away and what we will do when we are there with you.

KJV - 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan;...
NRSV - 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother's son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan...
TEV - "God's Call to Abram" - 4 When Abram was seventy-five years old, he started out from Haran, as the LORD had told him to do; and Lot went with him. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the wealth and all the slaves they had acquired in Haran, and they started out for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the land until he came to the sacred tree of Moreh, the holy place at Shechem. (At that time the Canaanites were still living in the land.) 7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "This is the country that I am going to give to your descendants." Then Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
B3 - Gen 13 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle:...
8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. 9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. 12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
14 And the Lord said
unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes,
and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward,
and westward: 15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give
it, and to thy seed for ever.
NRSV - 7 and there was strife between the herders of Abram's livestock and the herders of Lot's livestock...
8 Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herders and my herders; for we are kindred. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left." 10 Lot looked about him, and saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the LORD had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward; thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain and moved his tent as far as Sodom.
14 The LORD said to
Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Raise your eyes now, and
look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward
and westward; 15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to
your offspring forever.
TEV - "Abram and Lot Separate" - 5 Lot also had sheep, goats, and cattle, as well as his own family and servants. 6 And so there was not enough pasture land for the two of them to stay together, because they had too many animals. 7 So quarrels broke out between the men who took care of Abram's animals and those who took care of Lot's animals. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were still living in the land.) 8 Then Abram said to Lot, "We are relatives, and your men and my men shouldn't be quarreling. 9 So let's separate. Choose any part of the land you want. You go one way, and I'll go the other." 10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole Jordan Valley, all the way to Zoar, had plenty of water, like the Garden of the LORD or like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD had destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose the whole Jordan Valley for himself and moved away toward the east. That is how the two men parted. 12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled among the cities in the valley and camped near Sodom, 13 whose people were wicked and sinned against the LORD.
"Abram Moves
to Hebron" - 14 After Lot had left, the LORD said to Abram,
"From where you are, look carefully in all directions. 15 I am going
to give you and your descendants all the land that you see, and it will
be yours forever. 16 I am going to give you so many descendants that
no one will be able to count them all; it would be as easy to count all
the specks of dust on earth! 17 Now, go and look over the whole land, because
I am going to give it all to you." 18 So Abram moved his camp and settled
near the sacred trees of Mamre at Hebron, and there he built an altar to
the LORD.

KJV - 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
10 For he looked for
a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
NRSV - 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going.
10 For he looked forward
to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
TEV - "Faith" - 8 It was faith that made Abraham obey when God called him to go out to a country which God had promised to give him. He left his own country without knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he lived as a foreigner in the country that God had promised him. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who received the same promise from God. 10 For Abraham was waiting for the city which God has designed and built, the city with permanent foundations.

KJV - 9 ...as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
NRSV - 9 ...as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him" -- 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
TEV - "God's Wisdom" - 9 However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only a person's own spirit within him that knows all about him; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us.

KJV - 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise
in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom
of this world is foolishness with God...
NRSV - 16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?
18 Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age,
you should become fools so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of
this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches
the wise in their craftiness,"
TEV - "Servants of God" - 16 Surely you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you! 17 So if anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you yourselves are his temple. 18 No one should fool himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise by this world's standards, he should become a fool, in order to be really wise. 19 For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the scripture says, "God traps the wise in their cleverness"; 20 and another scripture says, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless." 21 No one, then, should boast about what men can do. Actually everything belongs to you: 22 Paul, Apollos, and Peter; this world, life and death, the present and the future -- all these are yours, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
B7 - 1Jo 4 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
4 Ye are of God, little
children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you,
than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they
of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth
God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the
spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
NRSV - 1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
4 Little children, you
are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater
than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore what
they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from
God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not
listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
TEV - "The True Spirit and the False Spirit" - 1 My dear friends, do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit, but test them to find out if the spirit they have comes from God. For many false prophets have gone out everywhere. 2 This is how you will be able to know whether it is God's Spirit: anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ came as a human being has the Spirit who comes from God. 3 But anyone who denies this about Jesus does not have the Spirit from God. The spirit that he has is from the Enemy of Christ; you heard that it would come, and now it is here in the world already. 4 But you belong to God, my children, and have defeated the false prophets, because the Spirit who is in you is more powerful than the spirit in those who belong to the world. 5 Those false prophets speak about matters of the world, and the world listens to them because they belong to the world. 6 But we belong to God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever does not belong to God does not listen to us. This, then, is how we can tell the difference between the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

KJV - 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
NRSV - 7 for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
TEV - "Thanksgiving and Encouragement" - 3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did. I thank him as I remember you always in my prayers night and day. 4 I remember your tears, and I want to see you very much, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I remember the sincere faith you have, the kind of faith that your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice also had. I am sure that you have it also. 6 For this reason I remind you to keep alive the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control.

KJV - 2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
5 There were they in
great fear, where no fear was:...
NRSV - 2 God looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.
5 There they shall be
in great terror, in terror such as has not been...
TEV - "The Wickedness of Men" - 2 God looks down from heaven at mankind to see if there are any who are wise, any who worship him. 3 But they have all turned away; they are all equally bad. Not one of them does what is right, not a single one. 4 "Don't they know?" God asks. "Are these evildoers ignorant? They live by robbing my people, and they never pray to me." 5 But then they will become terrified, as they have never been before, for God will scatter the bones of the enemies of his people. God has rejected them, and so Israel will totally defeat them. 6 How I pray that victory will come to Israel from Zion. How happy the people of Israel will be when God makes them prosperous again!

NRSV - 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence. 13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
TEV - "A Prayer of Praise" - 11 Teach me, LORD, what you want me to do, and lead me along a safe path, because I have many enemies. 12 Don't abandon me to my enemies, who attack me with lies and threats. 13 I know that I will live to see the LORD's goodness in this present life. 14 Trust in the LORD. TEV - "The Good News of Deliverance" - 10 People of Jerusalem, go out of the city And build a road for your returning people! Prepare a highway; clear it of stones! Put up a signal so that the nations can know 11 That the LORD is announcing to all the earth: "Tell the people of Jerusalem That the LORD is coming to save you, Bringing with him the people he has rescued." 12 You will be called "God's Holy People," "The People the LORD Has Saved." KJV - 1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
5 As long as I am in
the world, I am the light of the world. 6 When he had thus spoken, he spat
on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of
the blind man with the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of
Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and
washed, and came seeing.
NRSV - 1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God's works might be revealed in him.
5 As long as I am in
the world, I am the light of the world." 6 When he had said this, he
spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the
man's eyes, 7 saying to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam"
(which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see.
TEV - "Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind" - 1 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been born blind. 2 His disciples asked him, "Teacher, whose sin caused him to be born blind? Was it his own or his parents' sin?" 3 Jesus answered, "His blindness has nothing to do with his sins or his parents' sins. He is blind so that God's power might be seen at work in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me; night is coming when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light for the world." 6 After he said this, Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the spittle; he rubbed the mud on the man's eyes 7 and told him, "Go and wash your face in the Pool of Siloam." (This name means "Sent.") So the man went, washed his face, and came back seeing.

So you must live like people who belong to the light, 9 for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

B16 - Pro 23 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?...
6 Eat thou not the
bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to
thee; but his heart is not with thee.
NRSV - 5 When your eyes light upon it, it is gone;...
6 Do not eat the bread of the stingy; do not desire their delicacies; 7 for like a hair in the throat, so are they. "Eat and drink!" they say to you; but they do not mean it.
TEV - "7th Wise Saying" - 4 Be wise enough not to wear yourself out trying to get rich. 5 Your money can be gone in a flash, as if it had grown wings and flown away like an eagle.
"8th Wise Saying" - 6 Don't eat at the table of a stingy man or be greedy for the fine food he serves. 7 "Come on and have some more," he says, but he doesn't mean it. What he thinks is what he really is. 8 You will vomit up what you have eaten, and all your flattery will be wasted
4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to desist. 5 When your eyes light upon it, it is gone; for suddenly it takes wings to itself, flying like an eagle toward heaven. (NRSV)
'Do not wear yourself out making wealth' is close to 'Cast not thy heart in pursuit of riches', and 'It takes to itself wings, like an eagle it flies heavenwards' to 'They have made themnselves wings like geese and are flown away to the heavens' (with a change of similes)... There is an appeal to intellectual discrimination (bina), rather than to a theological concept of order which allots to a man his place under the sun and sets limits to his self-assertiveness. The man who clarifies his thoughts will realize the futility of waring himself out in the effort to get rich, because wealth is fickle and unpredictable; it is here today and gone tomorrow, and then it is as unattainable and as hopelessless distant as the eagle which has soared towards the heavens.

KJV - 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
NRSV - 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
TEV - "Slaves of Righteousness" - 15 What, then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law but under God's grace? By no means! 16 Surely you know that when you surrender yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are in fact the slaves of the master you obey -- either of sin, which results in death, or of obedience, which results in being put right with God.
B18 - Rom 8 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
NRSV - 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
TEV - "The Conflict in Man" - 5 Those who live as their human nature tells them to, have their minds controlled by what human nature wants. Those who live as the Spirit tells them to, have their minds controlled by what the Spirit wants. 6 To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace. 7 And so a person becomes an enemy of God when he is controlled by his human nature; for he does not obey God's law, and in fact he cannot obey it. 8 Those who obey their human nature cannot please God.
B19 - 1Jo 2 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
21 I have not written
unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that
no lie is of the truth.
NRSV - 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; 16 for all that is in the world -- the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches -- comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live forever.
21 I write to you, not
because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and you know
that no lie comes from the truth.
TEV - "The New Command" - 14 I write to you, my children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong; the word of God lives in you, and you have defeated the Evil One. 15 Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father. 16 Everything that belongs to the world -- what the sinful self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of -- none of this comes from the Father; it all comes from the world. 17 The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but he who does the will of God lives forever.
"The Enemy of Christ" - 18 My children, the end is near! You were told that the Enemy of Christ would come; and now many enemies of Christ have already appeared, and so we know that the end is near. 19 These people really did not belong to our fellowship, and that is why they left us; if they had belonged to our fellowship, they would have stayed with us. But they left so that it might be clear that none of them really belonged to us. 20 But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth. 21 I write you, then, not because you do not know the truth; instead, it is because you do know it, and you also know that no lie ever comes from the truth.

KJV - 6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
NRSV - 6 Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight."
TEV - "Wisdom and Stupidity" - 1 Wisdom has built her house and made seven columns for it. 2 She has had an animal killed for a feast, mixed spices in the wine, and set the table. 3 She has sent her servant girls to call out from the highest place in town: 4 "Come in, ignorant people!" And to the foolish man she says, 5 "Come, eat my food and drink the wine that I have mixed. 6 Leave the company of ignorant people, and live. Follow the way of knowledge." 7 If you correct a conceited man, you will only be insulted. If you reprimand an evil man, you will only get hurt. 8 Never correct a conceited man; he will hate you for it. But if you correct a wise man, he will respect you. 9 Anything you say to a wise man will make him wiser. Whatever you tell a righteous man will add to his knowledge.

KJV - 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
NRSV - 18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.
TEV - "Advice to Young Men" - 11 Son, when the LORD corrects you, pay close attention and take it as a warning. 12 The LORD corrects those he loves, as a father corrects a son of whom he is proud. 13 Happy is the man who becomes wise -- who comes to have understanding. 14 There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. 15 Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. 16 Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. 17 Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. 18 Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life. 19 The LORD created the earth by his wisdom; by his knowledge he set the sky in place.

KJV - 13 ...I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
NRSV - 13 ...I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differently about anything, this too God will reveal to you.
TEV - "Running toward the Goal" - 12 I do not claim that I have already succeeded or have already become perfect. I keep striving to win the prize for which Christ Jesus has already won me to himself. 13 Of course, my brothers, I really do not think that I have already won it; the one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead. 14 So I run straight toward the goal in order to win the prize, which is God's call through Christ Jesus to the life above. 15 All of us who are spiritually mature should have this same attitude. But if some of you have a different attitude, God will make this clear to you. 16 However that may be, let us go forward according to the same rules we have followed until now.

KJV - 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
9 For in him dwelleth
all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which
is the head of all principality and power:
NRSV - 6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
9 For in him the whole
fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have come to fullness in him,
who is the head of every ruler and authority.
TEV - "Fullness of Life in Christ" - 6 Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. 7 Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving. 8 See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by men and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ. 9 For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity, 10 and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.
B24 - Col 3 | Bible Lesson | BL questions | Bibles online | Commentary | Bible Terms>> | Dict | S&H | Strong's>> | KJV & NAS | Heb | Gr | S&H |
KJV - 1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
NRSV - 1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
TEV - "Dying and Living with Christ" - 1 You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. 2 Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory!

King James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

Strong's numbers |
Strong's numbers identify the Hebrew (OT) or Greek words (NT) from which the English words were translated. In BibleTexts.com footnotes, the numbers are enclosed in less-than and greater-than signs < >. Keep in mind that the Strong's numbers in the KJV do not necessarily represent the Hebrew and Greek words in the original texts. They represent the Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated. The following toolbars with resources based upon Strong's numbers:
