The ancients viewed the process of leaven as corrupting the loaf, like a corpse, causing it to swell up. Therefore leaven is unclean, something to be avoided (16:11). Leaven is the symbol of the unholy (Exod 12:15).

...The parable may also be seen as reinforcing certain literary and social conventions. First the mention of three measures of flour (cf. Luke 13:21) recalls the amount Sarah kneaded for the heavenly messengers (Gen. 18:6; see also Judg. 6:19; 1 Sam. 1:24; Hos. 7:4) This was approximately a bushel and was thus the largest amount of dough a person could knead. The bread produced could feed about one hundred people. Here work traditionally associated with women is recognized as having value. Second, against the prevailing negative image of leaven (Ex. 12:15-20; 23:18; 34:25; Lev. 2:11; Matt. 16:5-12; 1 Cor. 5:6-8; Gal. 5:9; but cf. Lev. 7:13-14; 23:17) is a positive picture of its use. The final point is that the message of the basilea ("realm"), although hidden like a small bit of leaven in a mound of dough, will become -- through this woman's efforts -- the bread of life.

Robert Gordis, in Koheleth, the man and his world: a study of Ecclesiastes, Third Augmented Edition (New York: Schocken Books, 1968, pages 282-285), comments:

This famous passage in which Koheleth [the name of the author of Ecclesiates] expresses his distrust of women testifies to the attraction they hold over him... That this is only one aspect of Koheleth's attitude toward women is clear from his counsel urging, "behold life with the woman thou lovest" (9:9). The ideal remains before him, no matter how often the reality has brought him disappointment -- a clue to the idealistic source from which his cynicism flows... The two attitudes are, of course, very common in Wisdom literature... It is generally overlooked that Koheleth does not have too high a regard for the character of the male sex either, since he finds men only one-tenth of one percent better than the women! Having reached this result, he concludes by saying that the human race itself leaves much to be desired... This weakness Koheleth attributes not to God's implanting but to men's propensity to eschew the straight path in favor of machinations. That evil is not God's will, but man's doing, is the general standpoint of Judaism as a whole.

• Note: There are so many corrections of the KJV's text of Revelation, because the KJV's Greek text of Revelation (from Erasmus' Greek text, which later became known as the Textus Receptus) was of very unreliable quality.

  James R. White (The King James Only Controversy: Can You Trust the Modern Translations?, Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1995, p. 55) comments:

  It is well known that Erasmus struggled with the text of Revelation. Not finding any manuscripts that contained the book, he borrowed one from his friend Reuchlin. Erasmus was quite pleased with the text, feeling that it was "of such great age that it might be thought to have been written in the time of the apostles." He had an unknown copyist make a fresh copy and returned the original to Reuchlin. The copyist had difficulty with the text (the manuscript contained a commentary on the book of Revelation, and the actual text of Scripture was imbedded in the commentary), and as a result made some mistakes that found their way into the printed editions of Erasmus' Greek text, and finally into the text of the King James Version.

  Bruce M. Metzger, The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration, Third, Enlarged Edition, NY: Oxford University Press, 1992, pp. 99-100) comments:

  For the Book of Revelation he had but one manuscript, dating from the twelfth century, which he had borrowed from his friend Reuchlin. Unfortunately, this manuscript lacked the final leaf, which had contained the last six verses of the book. For these verses, as well as a few other passages throughout the book where the Greek text of the Apocalypse and the adjoining Greek commentary with which the manuscript was supplied are so mixed up as to be almost indistinguishable, Erasmus depended upon the Latin Vulgate, translating this text into Greek. As would be expected from such a procedure, here and there in Erasmus' self-made Greek text are readings which have never been found in any known Greek manuscript - but which are still perpetuated today in printings of the so-called Textus Receptus of the Greek New Testament.
