KJV <Strong's #> - 6 My soul <05315> [waiteth] for the Lord <0136> more than they that watch <08104> for the morning <01242>: [I say, more than] they that watch <08104> for the morning <01242>.

KJV - 6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

NRSV - 6 my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

TEV - "A Prayer for Help" - 1 From the depths of my despair I call to you, LORD. 2 Hear my cry, O Lord; listen to my call for help! 3 If you kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned? 4 But you forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of you. 5 I wait eagerly for the LORD's help, and in his word I trust. 6 I wait for the Lord more eagerly than watchmen wait for the dawn -- than watchmen wait for the dawn.

KJV <Strong's #> - 1 Unto thee, O LORD <03068>, do I lift <05375> up my soul <05315>.

8 Good <02896> and upright <03477> [is] the LORD <03068>:...

9 The meek <06035> will he guide <01869> in judgment <04941>: and the meek <06035> will he teach <03925> his way <01870>. 10 All <03605> the paths <0734> of the LORD <03068> [are] mercy <02617> and truth <0571> unto such as keep <05341> his covenant <01285> and his testimonies <05713>.

12 What <04310> man <0376> [is] he that feareth <03373> the LORD <03068>? him shall he teach <03384> in the way <01870> [that] he shall choose <0977>. 13 His soul <05315> shall dwell <03885> at ease <02896>; and his seed <02233> shall inherit <03423> the earth <0776>.

15 Mine eyes <05869> [are] ever <08548> toward <0413> the LORD <03068>;...

20 O keep <08104> my soul <05315>, and deliver <05337> me: let me not be ashamed <0954>; for I put my trust <02620> in thee.

KJV - 1 Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

8 Good and upright is the Lord:…

9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. 10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

12 What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. 13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

15 Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord;…

20 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

NRSV - 1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.

8 Good and upright is the LORD;...

9 He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. 10 All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

12 Who are they that fear the LORD? He will teach them the way that they should choose. 13 They will abide in prosperity, and their children shall possess the land.

15 My eyes are ever toward the LORD,...

20 O guard my life, and deliver me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

TEV - "A Prayer for Guidance and Protection" - 1 To you, O LORD, I offer my prayer; 2 in you, my God, I trust. Save me from the shame of defeat; don't let my enemies gloat over me! 3 Defeat does not come to those who trust in you, but to those who are quick to rebel against you.

8 Because the LORD is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow. 9 He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will. 10 With faithfulness and love he leads all who keep his covenant and obey his commands. 11 Keep your promise, LORD, and forgive my sins, for they are many. 12 Those who have reverence for the LORD will learn from him the path they should follow. 13 They will always be prosperous, and their children will possess the land. 14 The LORD is the friend of those who obey him and he affirms his covenant with them. 15 I look to the LORD for help at all times, and he rescues me from danger. 16 Turn to me, LORD, and be merciful to me, because I am lonely and weak. 17 Relieve me of my worries and save me from all my troubles. 18 Consider my distress and suffering and forgive all my sins. 19 See how many enemies I have; see how much they hate me. 20 Protect me and save me; keep me from defeat. I come to you for safety. 21 May my goodness and honesty preserve me, because I trust in you.

KJV <Strong's #> - 5 Thou hast beset <06696> me behind <0268> and before <06924>, and laid <07896> thine hand <03709> upon me.

14 I will praise <03034> thee; for I am fearfully <03372> [and] wonderfully <06395> made: marvellous <06381> [are] thy works <04639>; and [that] my soul <05315> knoweth <03045> right well.

KJV - 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

NRSV - 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.

TEV - "God's Complete Knowledge and Care" - 1 LORD, you have examined me and you know me. 2 You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts. 3 You see me, whether I am working or resting; you know all my actions. 4 Even before I speak, you already know what I will say. 5 You are all around me on every side; you protect me with your power. 6 Your knowledge of me is too deep; it is beyond my understanding.

13 You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart. 15 When my bones were being formed, carefully put together in my mother's womb, when I was growing there in secret, you knew that I was there -- 16 you saw me before I was born. The days allotted to me had all been recorded in your book, before any of them ever began.

KJV <Strong's #> - 11 Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068>, the Holy <06918> One of Israel <03478>, and his Maker <03335>, Ask <07592> me of things to come <0857> concerning <05921> my sons <01121>, and concerning <05921> the work <06467> of my hands <03027> command <06680> ye me. 12 I have made <06213> the earth <0776>, and created <01254> man <0120> upon it: I, [even] my hands <03027>, have stretched <05186> out the heavens <08064>, and all <03605> their host <06635> have I commanded <06680>. 13 I have raised <05782> him up in righteousness <06664>, and I will direct <03474> all <03605> his ways <01870>: he shall build <01129> my city <05892>, and he shall let go <07971> my captives <01546>, not for price <04242> nor <03808> reward <07810>, saith <0559> the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>.

18 For thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> that created <01254> the heavens <08064>; God <0430> himself <01931> that formed <03335> the earth <0776> and made <06213> it; he hath established <03559> it, he created <01254> it not in vain <08414>, he formed <03335> it to be inhabited <03427>: I [am] the LORD <03068>; and [there is] none <0369> else <05750>.

23 I have sworn <07650> by myself, the word <01697> is gone <03318> out of my mouth <06310> [in] righteousness <06666>, and shall not return <07725>, That unto me every <03605> knee <01290> shall bow <03766>, every <03605> tongue <03956> shall swear <07650>.

KJV - 11 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. 13 I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways:…

18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.

23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

NRSV - 11 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: Will you question me about my children, or command me concerning the work of my hands? 12 I made the earth, and created humankind upon it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host. 13 I have aroused Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his paths straight;...

18 For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it a chaos, he formed it to be inhabited!): I am the LORD, and there is no other.

23 By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: "To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear."

TEV - "The LORD of Creation and History" - 9 Does a clay pot dare argue with its maker, a pot that is like all the others? Does the clay ask the potter what he is doing? Does the pot complain that its maker has no skill? 10 Does anyone dare say to his parents, "Why did you make me like this?" 11 The LORD, the holy God of Israel, the one who shapes the future, says: "You have no right to question me about my children or to tell me what I ought to do! 12 I am the one who made the earth and created mankind to live there. By my power I stretched out the heavens; I control the sun, the moon, and the stars. 13 I myself have stirred Cyrus to action to fulfill my purpose and put things right. I will straighten out every road that he travels. He will rebuild my city, Jerusalem, and set my captive people free. No one has hired him or bribed him to do this." The LORD Almighty has spoken.

18 The LORD created the heavens -- he is the one who is God! He formed and made the earth -- he made it firm and lasting. He did not make it a desolate waste, but a place for people to live. It is he who says, "I am the LORD, and there is no other god. 19 I have not spoken in secret or kept my purpose hidden. I did not require the people of Israel to look for me in a desolate waste. I am the LORD, and I speak the truth; I make known what is right."

"The LORD of the World and the Idols of Babylon" - 22 "Turn to me now and be saved, people all over the world! I am the only God there is. 23 My promise is true, and it will not be changed. I solemnly promise by all that I am: Everyone will come and kneel before me and vow to be loyal to me. 24 "They will say that only through me are victory and strength to be found; but all who hate me will suffer disgrace. 25 I, the LORD, will rescue all the descendants of Jacob, and they will give me praise.

KJV <Strong's #> - 24 God <2316> that made <4160> the world <2889> and all <3956> things therein <846>, seeing that he is Lord <2962> of heaven <3772> and earth <1093>, dwelleth <2730> not in temples <3485> made <5499> with hands <5499>; 25 Neither <3761> is worshipped <2323> with men's <444> [human <442>] hands <5495>, as though he needed <4326> any <5100> thing, seeing he giveth <1325> to all <3956> life <2222>, and breath <4157>, and all <3956> things; 26 And hath made <4160> of one <1520> blood <129> all <3956> nations <1484> of men <444> for to dwell <2730> on <1909> all <3956> the face <4383> of the earth <1093>, and hath determined <3724> the times <2540> before <4384> appointed <4384>, and the bounds <3734> of their habitation <2733>; 27 That they should seek <2212> the Lord <2962> [God <2316>], if <1487> haply <686> they might feel <5584> after him, and find <2147> him, though <2544> he be not far <3112> from every <1538> one <1520> of us: 28 For in him we live <2198>, and move <2795>, and have our being <2070>; as certain <5100> also <2532> of your <5209> own <2596> poets <4163> have said <2046>, For we are also <2532> his <5120> offspring <1085>

KJV - 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men's [human] hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord [God], if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

NRSV - 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26 From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27 so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him -- though indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28 For "In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said, "For we too are his offspring.'

TEV - "In Athens" - 22 Paul stood up in front of the city council and said, "I see that in every way you Athenians are very religious. 23 For as I walked through your city and looked at the places where you worship, I found an altar on which is written, "To an Unknown God.' That which you worship, then, even though you do not know it, is what I now proclaim to you. 24 God, who made the world and everything in it, is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in man-made temples. 25 Nor does he need anything that we can supply by working for him, since it is he himself who gives life and breath and everything else to everyone. 26 From one man he created all races of mankind and made them live throughout the whole earth. He himself fixed beforehand the exact times and the limits of the places where they would live. 27 He did this so that they would look for him, and perhaps find him as they felt around for him. Yet God is actually not far from any one of us; 28 as someone has said, "In him we live and move and exist.' It is as some of your poets have said, "We too are his children.' 29 Since we are God's children, we should not suppose that his nature is anything like an image of gold or silver or stone, shaped by the art and skill of man. 30 God has overlooked the times when people did not know him, but now he commands all of them everywhere to turn away from their evil ways.

KJV <Strong's #> - 9 For we are labourers <4904> together <4904> with God <2316>: ye are God's <2316> husbandry <1091>, [ye are] God's <2316> building <3619>.

KJV - 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

NRSV - 9 For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building.

TEV - "Servants of God" - 5 After all, who is Apollos? And who is Paul? We are simply God's servants, by whom you were led to believe. Each one of us does the work which the Lord gave him to do: 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow. 7 The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is God who matters, because he makes the plant grow. 8 There is no difference between the man who plants and the man who waters; God will reward each one according to the work he has done. 9 For we are partners working together for God, and you are God's field. You are also God's building.10 Using the gift that God gave me, I did the work of an expert builder and laid the foundation, and another man is building on it. But each one must be careful how he builds.

KJV <Strong's #> - 9 ...as it is written <1125>, Eye <3788> hath not seen <1492>, nor <3756> ear <3775> heard <191>, neither <3756> have entered <305> into <1909> the heart <2588> of man <444>, the things which <3739> God <2316> hath prepared <2090> for them that love <25> him. 10 But God <2316> hath revealed <601> [them] unto us by his Spirit <4151>: for the Spirit <4151> searcheth <2045> all <3956> things, yea <2532>, the deep <899> things of God <2316>. 11 For what <5101> man <444> knoweth <1492> the things of a man <444>, save <1508> the spirit <4151> of man <444> which <3588> is in him? even <2532> so <3779> the things of God <2316> knoweth <1492> [perceives <1097] no <3762> man <3762>, but the Spirit <4151> of God <2316>. 12 Now <1161> we have received <2983>, not the spirit <4151> of the world <2889>, but the spirit <4151> which <3588> is of God <2316>; that we might know <1492> the things that are freely given <5483> to us of God <2316>. 13 Which <3739> things also <2532> we speak <2980>, not in the words <3056> which man's <442> wisdom <4678> teacheth <1318>, but which the Holy <40> Ghost [Spirit] <4151> teacheth <1318>; comparing <4793> spiritual <4152> things with spiritual <4152>.

KJV - 9 …as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth [perceives] no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost [Spirit] teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

NRSV - 9 ...as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him" -- 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13 And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.

TEV - "God's Wisdom" - 9 However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only a person's own spirit within him that knows all about him; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us. 13 So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit. 14 Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them; they are nonsense to him, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis.

KJV <Strong's #> - 1 For we know <1492> that if <1437> our earthly <1919> house <3614> of [this] tabernacle <4636> were dissolved <2647>, we have <2192> a building <3619> of God <2316>, an house <3614> not made <886> with hands <886>, eternal <166> in the heavens <3772>.

6 Therefore <3767> [we are] always <3842> confident <2292>, knowing <1492> that, whilst we are at <1722> home <1736> in the body <4983>, we are absent <1553> from the Lord <2962>: 7 (For we walk <4043> by faith <4102>, not by sight <1491>:) 8 We are confident <2292>, [I say], and willing <2106> rather <3123> to be absent <1553> from the body <4983>, and to be present <1736> with the Lord <2962>.

KJV - 1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

NRSV - 1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord -- 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

TEV - "Living by Faith" - 1 For we know that when this tent we live in -- our body here on earth -- is torn down, God will have a house in heaven for us to live in, a home he himself has made, which will last forever. 2 And now we sigh, so great is our desire that our home which comes from heaven should be put on over us; 3 by being clothed with it we shall not be without a body. 4 While we live in this earthly tent, we groan with a feeling of oppression; it is not that we want to get rid of our earthly body, but that we want to have the heavenly one put on over us, so that what is mortal will be transformed by life. 5 God is the one who has prepared us for this change, and he gave us his Spirit as the guarantee of all that he has in store for us. 6 So we are always full of courage. We know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord's home. 7 For our life is a matter of faith, not of sight. 8 We are full of courage and would much prefer to leave our home in the body and be at home with the Lord. 9 More than anything else, however, we want to please him, whether in our home here or there. 10 For all of us must appear before Christ, to be judged by him. Each one will receive what he deserves, according to everything he has done, good or bad, in his bodily life.

KJV - 1 Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake. 2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. 5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. 9 O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.

NRSV - 1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness. 2 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" 3 Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. 6 They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. 7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; they make no sound in their throats. 8 Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them. 9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

TEV - "The One True God" - 1 To you alone, O LORD, to you alone, and not to us, must glory be given because of your constant love and faithfulness. 2 Why should the nations ask us, "Where is your God?" 3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever he wishes. 4 Their gods are made of silver and gold, formed by human hands. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see. 6 They have ears, but cannot hear, and noses, but cannot smell. 7 They have hands, but cannot feel, and feet, but cannot walk; they cannot make a sound. 8 May all who made them and who trust in them become like the idols they have made. 9 Trust in the LORD, you people of Israel. He helps you and protects you. 10 Trust in the LORD, you priests of God. He helps you and protects you. 11 Trust in the LORD, all you that worship him. He helps you and protects you. 12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us; he will bless the people of Israel and all the priests of God. 13 He will bless everyone who honors him, the great and the small alike. 14 May the LORD give you children -- you and your descendants! 15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

TEV - "The LORD Will Punish the Earth" - 4 The earth dries up and withers; the whole world grows weak; both earth and sky decay. 5 The people have defiled the earth by breaking God's laws and by violating the covenant he made to last forever. 6 So God has pronounced a curse on the earth. Its people are paying for what they have done. Fewer and fewer remain alive. 7 The grapevines wither, and wine is becoming scarce. Everyone who was once happy is now sad, 8 and the joyful music of their harps and drums has ceased. 9 There is no more happy singing over wine; no one enjoys its taste any more. 10 In the city everything is in chaos, and people lock themselves in their houses for safety. 11 People shout in the streets because there is no more wine. Happiness is gone forever; it has been banished from the land.

10 The Lord hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God.

8 Suddenly Babylon has fallen and is shattered;...

10 The LORD has brought forth our vindication; come, let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God.

TEV - "Further Judgment on Babylonia" - 5 I, the LORD God Almighty, have not abandoned Israel and Judah, even though they have sinned against me, the Holy One of Israel. 6 Run away from Babylonia! Run for your lives! Do not be killed because of Babylonia's sin. I am now taking my revenge and punishing it as it deserves. 7 Babylonia was like a gold cup in my hand, making the whole world drunk. The nations drank its wine and went out of their minds. 8 Babylonia has suddenly fallen and is destroyed! Mourn over it! Get medicine for its wounds, and maybe it can be healed. 9 Foreigners living there said, "We tried to help Babylonia, but it was too late. Let's leave now and go back home. God has punished Babylonia with all his might and has destroyed it completely." 10 The LORD says, "My people shout, "The LORD has shown that we are in the right. Let's go and tell the people in Jerusalem what the LORD our God has done."

KJV - 34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

NRSV - 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

TEV - "Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men" - 33 Many people, however, saw them leave and knew at once who they were; so they went from all the towns and ran ahead by land and arrived at the place ahead of Jesus and his disciples. 34 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw this large crowd, and his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things. 35 When it was getting late, his disciples came to him and said, "It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. 36 Send the people away, and let them go to the nearby farms and villages in order to buy themselves something to eat."

34 And looking <308> up to heaven <3772>, he sighed <4727>, and saith <3004> unto him, Ephphatha <2188>, that is <3603>, Be opened <1272>. 35 And straightway <2112> his ears <189> were opened <1272>, and the string <1199> of his tongue <1100> was loosed <3089>, and he spake <2980> plain <3723>. 36 And he charged <1291> them that they should tell <2036> no <3367> man <3367>: but the more <3745> he charged <1291> them, so much <3123> the more <3123> a great <3123> deal <4054> they published <2784> [it]; 37 And were beyond <5249> measure <5249> astonished <1605>, saying <3004>, He hath done <4160> all <3956> things well <2573>: he maketh <4160> both <5037> the deaf <2974> to hear <191>, and the dumb <216> to speak <2980>.

KJV - 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. 36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; 37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

NRSV - 32 They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him.

34 Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." 35 And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

TEV - "Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute" - 31 Jesus then left the neighborhood of Tyre and went on through Sidon to Lake Galilee, going by way of the territory of the Ten Towns. 32 Some people brought him a man who was deaf and could hardly speak, and they begged Jesus to place his hands on him. 33 So Jesus took him off alone, away from the crowd, put his fingers in the man's ears, spat, and touched the man's tongue. 34 Then Jesus looked up to heaven, gave a deep groan, and said to the man, "Ephphatha," which means, "Open up!" 35 At once the man was able to hear, his speech impediment was removed, and he began to talk without any trouble. 36 Then Jesus ordered the people not to speak of it to anyone; but the more he ordered them not to, the more they told it. 37 And all who heard were completely amazed. "How well he does everything!" they exclaimed. "He even causes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak!"

NRSV - 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.

TEV - "Running toward the Goal" - 17 Keep on imitating me, my brothers. They are proud of what they should be ashamed of, and they think only of things that belong to this world. 20 We, however, are citizens of heaven, and we eagerly wait for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven. 21 He will change our weak mortal bodies and make them like his own glorious body, using that power by which he is able to bring all things under his rule.

King James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

In the KJV texts above, the strike-through words are those that were not in the original Hebrew (OT), Aramaic (Daniel only), or Greek (NT) texts of the Bible. [Bold-type bracketed words] are additions or corrections to enable the KJV text to better conform to what today's scholars believe to have been the original text, as published in the United Bible Society's definitive Hebrew Old Testament (Biblica Hebraica Stuttsgartensia) and Greek New Testament, 4th Revised Edition). [Regular-type bracketed words] are those words that are italized in the printed edition of the KJV. They are words that were added by the KJV translators without any corresponding Hebrew or Greek words.

Strong's numbers

Strong's numbers identify the Hebrew (OT) or Greek words (NT) from which the KJV words were translated, and they are enclosed in less-than and greater-than signs < >. Keep in mind that the Strong's numbers do not necessarily represent the Hebrew and Greek words in the original texts. They represent the Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated. The following two resources are available to use the Strong's numbers:

On each Bible citation toolbar -- You will find links to Strong's Heb and Strong's Gr lexicons, which will enable you to use the Strong's numbers to explore the Hebrew and Greek words in the texts from which the KJV was translated. When inputting Strong's number into one of those online lexicons, delete any preceding zeros (0's). The easiest way to do this is to copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the number (1 to 4 digits) from the KJV text to the online lexicon's input field, then click on the lexicon's "Find" button.

On each Bible citation toolbar and S&H toolbar -- You will find a Strong's S&H link. This provides links to descriptions of those Hebrew and Greek words that are used in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Each word is identified by its respective Strong's numbers.
