GT - 1Co 15 |
KJV <Strong's #> - 49 ...as we have borne <5409> the image <1504> of the earthy <5517>, we shall also <2532> bear <5409> the image <1504> of the heavenly <2032>.
KJV - 49 ...as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
NRSV - 49 ...as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.
TEV - "The Resurrection Body" - 47 The first Adam, made of earth, came from the earth; the second Adam came from heaven. 48 Those who belong to the earth are like the one who was made of earth; those who are of heaven are like the one who came from heaven. 49 Just as we wear the likeness of the man made of earth, so we will wear the likeness of the Man from heaven.

KJV <Strong's #> - 16 The people <2992> which <3588> sat <2521> in darkness <4655> saw <1492> great <3173> light <5457>;...
17 From that time <5119> Jesus <2424> began <756> to preach <2784>, and to say <3004>, Repent <3340>: for the kingdom <932> of heaven <3772> is at <1448> hand <1448>.
KJV - 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light;...
17 From that time Jesus
began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
NRSV - 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,...
17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
TEV - "Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee" - 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he went away to Galilee. 13 He did not stay in Nazareth, but went to live in Capernaum, a town by Lake Galilee, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was done to make come true what the prophet Isaiah had said, 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee, land of the Gentiles! 16 The people who live in darkness will see a great light. On those who live in the dark land of death the light will shine." 17 From that time Jesus began to preach his message: "Turn away from your sins, because the Kingdom of heaven is near!"
RR2 - Mat 22 |
KJV <Strong's #> - 23 The same <1565> day <2250> came <4334> to him the Sadducees <4523>, which <3588> say <3004> that there is no <3361> resurrection <386>, and asked <1905>him, 24 Saying <3004>, Master <1320>, Moses <3475> said <2036>, If <1437> aman <5100> die <599>, having <2192> no <3361> children <5043>, his brother<80> shall marry <1918> his wife <1135>, and raise <450> up seed <4690> untohis brother <80>. 25 Now <1161> there were with us seven <2033> brethren <80>:and the first <4413>, when he had married <1060> a wife, deceased <5053>, and,having <2192> no <3361> issue <4690>, left <863> his wife <1135> unto hisbrother <80>: 26 Likewise <3668> the second <1208> also <2532>, and the third<5154>, unto the seventh <2033>. 27 And last <5305> of all <3956> the woman<1135> died <599> also <2532>. 28 Therefore <3767> in the resurrection <386>whose <5101> wife <1135> shall she be of the seven <2033>?
29 Jesus <2424> answered
<611> and said <2036> unto them, Yedo err <4105>, not knowing
<1492> the scriptures <1124>, nor <3366> the power<1411>
of God <2316>. 30 For in the resurrection <386> they neither <3777>
marry <1060>, nor <3777> are given <1547> in marriage <1547>,
but are as the angels <32> of God <2316> in heaven <3772>.
31 But as touching <4012> the resurrection <386> of the dead <3498>,
have ye not read <314> that which <3588> was spoken <4483>
unto you by God <2316>, saying <3004>, 32 I am <1510> the
God <2316> of Abraham <11>, and the God <2316> of Isaac <2464>,
and the God <2316> of Jacob <2384>? God <2316> is not the
God <2316> of the dead <3498>, but of the living <2198>.
KJV - 23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, 24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. 27 And last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven?...
29 Jesus answered and said
unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For
in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as
the angels of God in heaven. 31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead,
have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, 32 I am the
God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God
of the dead, but of the living.
NRSV - 23 The same day some Sadducees came to him, saying there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, 24 "Teacher, Moses said, "If a man dies childless, his brother shall marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother.' 25 Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died childless, leaving the widow to his brother. 26 The second did the same, so also the third, down to the seventh. 27 Last of all, the woman herself died. 28 In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be?...
29 Jesus answered them,
"You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of
God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have
you not read what was said to you by God, 32 "I am the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is God not of the dead, but of the
living."
TEV - "The Question about Rising from Death" - 23 That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and claimed that people will not rise from death. 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses said that if a man who has no children dies, his brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children. 25 Now, there were seven brothers who used to live here. The oldest got married and died without having children, so he left his widow to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second brother, to the third, and finally to all seven. 27 Last of all, the woman died. 28 Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All of them had married her." 29 Jesus answered them, "How wrong you are! It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. 30 For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. 31 Now, as for the dead rising to life: haven't you ever read what God has told you? He said, 32 "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' He is the God of the living, not of the dead." 33 When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching.

KJV <Strong's #> - 3 LORD <03068>, what <04100> [is] man <0120>, that thou takest <03947> knowledge <03045> of him! [or] the son <01121> of man <0582>, that thou makest account <02803> of him!
7 Send <07971> thine hand <03027> from above <04791>;...
11 Rid <06475> me,
and deliver <05337> me from the hand <03027> of strange <02114>
children <01121>, whose <0834> mouth <06310> speaketh <01696>
vanity <07723>, and their right <03225> hand <03225> [is]
a right <03225> hand <03225> of falsehood <08267>: 12 That
our sons <01121> [may be] as plants <05195> grown <01431>
up in their youth <05271>; [that] our daughters <01121> [may be]
as corner <02106> stones <02106>, polished <02404> [after]
the similitude <08403> of a palace <01964>:
KJV - 3 Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
7 Send thine hand from above;...
11 Rid me,
and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity,
and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood: 12 That our sons may be as
plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones,
polished after the similitude of a palace:
NRSV - 3 O LORD, what are human beings that you regard them, or mortals that you think of them?
7 Stretch out your hand from on high;...
11 Rescue me from the cruel
sword, and deliver me from the hand of aliens, whose mouths speak lies, and
whose right hands are false. 12 May our sons in their youth be like plants full
grown, our daughters like corner pillars, cut for the building of a palace.
TEV - "A King Thanks God for Victory" - 3 LORD, what is man, that you notice him; mere man, that you pay attention to him? 4 He is like a puff of wind; his days are like a passing shadow. 5 O LORD, tear the sky open and come down; touch the mountains, and they will pour out smoke. 6 Send flashes of lightning and scatter your enemies; shoot your arrows and send them running. 7 Reach down from above, pull me out of the deep water, and rescue me; save me from the power of foreigners, 8 who never tell the truth and lie even under oath. 9 I will sing you a new song, O God; I will play the harp and sing to you. 10 You give victory to kings and rescue your servant David. 11 Save me from my cruel enemies; rescue me from the power of foreigners, who never tell the truth and lie even under oath. 12 May our sons in their youth be like plants that grow up strong. May our daughters be like stately columns which adorn the corners of a palace. 13 May our barns be filled with crops of every kind. May the sheep in our fields bear young by the tens of thousands. 14 May our cattle reproduce plentifully without miscarriage or loss. May there be no cries of distress in our streets. 15 Happy is the nation of whom this is true; happy are the people whose God is the LORD!
B2 - Rom 8 |
KJV <Strong's #> - 9 ...ye are not in the flesh <4561>, but in the Spirit <4151>, if <1512> so be that the Spirit <4151> of God <2316> dwell <3611> in you. Now <1161> if <1487> any <5100> man have <2192> not the Spirit <4151> of Christ <5547>, he is none <3756> of his.
12 Therefore <3767>, brethren <80>, we are debtors <3781>, not to the flesh <4561>, to live <2198> after <2596> the flesh <4561>. 13 For if <1437> ye live <2198> after <2596> the flesh <4561>, ye shall die <599>: but if <1487> ye through the Spirit <4151> do mortify <2289> the deeds <4234> of the body <4983>, ye shall live <2198>. 14 For as many <3745> as are led <71> by the Spirit <4151> of God <2316>, they are the sons <5207> of God <2316>. 15 For ye have not received <2983> the spirit <4151> of bondage <1397> again <3825> to fear <5401>; but ye have received <2983> the Spirit <4151> of adoption <5206>, whereby <3739> we cry <2896>, Abba <5>, Father <3962>.
19 For the earnest <603>
expectation <603> of the creature <2937> waiteth <553> for
the manifestation <602> of the sons <5207> of God <2316>.
20 For the creature <2937> was made <5293> subject <5293>
to vanity <3153>, not willingly <1635>, but by reason <1223>
of him who hath subjected <5293> [the same] in hope <1680> ,
21 Because [that] <3754> the creature <2937> itself
<846> also <2532> shall be delivered <1659> from the bondage
<1397> of corruption <5356> into <1519> the glorious <1391>
liberty <1657> of the children <5043> of God <2316>.
KJV - 9 ...ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
19 For the earnest expectation
of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20 For the
creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who
hath subjected the same in hope , 21 Because
[that] the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of
corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
NRSV - 9 ...you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh -- 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!"
19 For the creation waits
with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation
was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one
who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from
its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children
of God.
TEV - "The Conflict in Man" - 9 But you do not live as your human nature tells you to; instead, you live as the Spirit tells you to -- if, in fact, God's Spirit lives in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ lives in you, the Spirit is life for you because you have been put right with God, even though your bodies are going to die because of sin. 11 If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from death, lives in you, then he who raised Christ from death will also give life to your mortal bodies by the presence of his Spirit in you. 12 So then, my brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to live as our human nature wants us to. 13 For if you live according to your human nature, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death your sinful actions, you will live. 14 Those who are led by God's Spirit are God's sons. 15 For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God's children, and by the Spirit's power we cry out to God, "Father! my Father!" 16 God's Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God's children. 17 Since we are his children, we will possess the blessings he keeps for his people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him; for if we share Christ's suffering, we will also share his glory.
"The Future Glory"
- 18 I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared
at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us. 19 All of creation
waits with eager longing for God to reveal his sons. 20 For creation was condemned
to lose its purpose, not of its own will, but because God willed it to be
so. Yet there was the hope 21 that creation itself would one day be set free
from its slavery to decay and would share the glorious freedom of the children
of God. 22 For we know that up to the present time all of creation groans
with pain, like the pain of childbirth.
"In hope" is the beginning of a prepositional clause that begins in Rom 8:20 and continues in Rom 8:21. Unfortunately, the KJV punctuates these verses poorly. The comma should precede "in hope" rather than follow it. And the Greek word hoti <Strong's # 3754> should be translated "that" instead of "because". This was a case where the KJV translators had the correct Greek text, but the translators themselves apparently did not understand the meaning. (When reading from the KJV, one should feel free to change the punctuation to reflect the originally intended meaning.)
The original 1611 edition of the KJV read exactly as follows:
20 For the creature was made subiect to vanitie, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subiected the same in hope: 21 Because the creature it selfe also shall bee deliuered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious libertie of the children of God.
(There are no typographical errors in the above quote. The 1611 KJV used different spelling and punctuation than our current versions of the KJV. In some cases it also used different words than our several current versions of the KJV. For further details, see http://www.bibletexts.com/kjv-tr.htm.)
The TEV translates these two verses:
[20] For creation was condemned to lose its purpose, not of its own will, but because God willed it to be so. {See Gen 3:17-19} Yet there was the hope [21] that creation itself would one day be set free from its slavery to decay and would share the glorious freedom of the children of God.
The NRSV translates these two verses:
[20] for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope [21] that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Regarding this passage, the Harper's Bible Commentary (Edited by James Luther Mays, New York: Harper and Row, Publishers, Inc., 1988) writes, "The world’s futility and 'decay' (i.e., its vulnerability to the ravages of time), two of its most characteristic marks to Hellenistic thinking, are not the result of anything it has done; there is no 'fall' of creation. Rather, they are part of the created order and fall under God’s own 'expectation that the creation itself will be set free' to share in the glorious liberty of God’s children (Rom. 8:20-21), so bearing their own testimony to God’s transcending future."
This passage may be better understood in light of 1Co 15:22-24,45-58. S&H 566:1 also sheds some significant light on this, as do S&H 288:31-290:2 and S&H 316:3-7.

KJV <Strong's #> - 5 If <03588> brethren <0251> dwell <03427> together <03162>, and one <0259> of them die <04191>, and have no <0369> child <01121>, the wife <0802> of the dead <04191> shall not marry without <02351> unto a stranger: her husband's <02993> brother <02993> shall go <0935> in unto her, and take <03947> her to him to wife <0802>, and perform the duty of an husband's <02992> brother <02992> unto her.
KJV - 5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
NRSV - 5 When brothers reside together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband's brother shall go in to her, taking her in marriage, and performing the duty of a husband's brother to her,
TEV - "Duty to a Dead Brother" - 5 "If two brothers live on the same property and one of them dies, leaving no son, then his widow is not to be married to someone outside the family; it is the duty of the dead man's brother to marry her. 6 The first son that they have will be considered the son of the dead man, so that his family line will continue in Israel. 7 But if the dead man's brother does not want to marry her, she is to go before the town leaders and say, "My husband's brother will not do his duty; he refuses to give his brother a descendant among the people of Israel.'

KJV <Strong's #> - 11 Then said <0559> Judah <03063> to Tamar <08559> his daughter <03618> in law <03618>, Remain <03427> a widow <0490> at thy father's <01> house <01004>, till <05704> Shelah <07956> my son <01121> be grown <01431>: for he said <0559>, Lest <06435> peradventure he die <04191> also <01571>, as his brethren <0251> [did]...
13 And it was told <05046> Tamar <08559>, saying <0559>, Behold <02009> thy father <02524> in law <02524> goeth <05927> up to Timnath <08553> to shear <01494> his sheep <06629>.
14 And she put <05493> her widow's <0491> garments <0899> off <05921> from her, and covered <03680> her with a vail <06809>, and wrapped <05968> herself, and sat <03427> in an open <05869> place <06607>, which <0834> [is] by the way <01870> to Timnath <08553>; for she saw <07200> that Shelah <07956> was grown <01431>, and she was not given <05414> unto him to wife <0802>. 15 When Judah <03063> saw <07200> her, he thought <02803> her [to be] an harlot <02181>; because <03588> she had covered <03680> her face <06440>. 16 And he turned <05186> unto her by the way <01870>, and said <0559>, Go <03051> to, I pray <04994> thee, let me come <0935> in unto thee; (for he knew <03045> not that she [was] his daughter <03618> in law <03618>.)...
18 And he said <0559>, What <0834> pledge <06162> shall I give <05414> thee? And she said <0559>, Thy signet <02368>, and thy bracelets <06616>, and thy staff <04294> that [is] in thine hand <03027>. And he gave <05414> [it] her, and came <0935> in unto her, and she conceived <02030> by him.
24 And it came <01961>
to pass about three <07969> months <02320> after, that it was
told <05046> Judah <03063>, saying <0559>, Tamar <08559>
thy daughter <03618> in law <03618> hath played the harlot <02181>;
and also <01571>, behold <02009>, she [is] with child <02030>
by whoredom <02183>. And Judah <03063> said <0559>, Bring
<03318> her forth <03318>, and let her be burnt <08313>.
25 When she [was] brought <03318> forth <03318>, she sent <07971>
to her father <02524> in law <02524>, saying <0559>, By
the man <0376>, whose <0834> these <0428> [are, am] I
with child <02030>: and she said <0559>, Discern <05234>,
I pray <04994> thee, whose <0834> [are] these <0428>,
the signet <02858>, and bracelets <06616>, and staff <04294>.
26 And Judah <03063> acknowledged <05234> [them], and said <0559>,
She hath been more righteous <06663> than I; because <03588>
that I gave <05414> her not to Shelah <07956> my son <01121>.
And he knew <03045> her again <03254> no <03808> more
<05750>.
KJV - 11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did...
13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep. 14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. 16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.)...
18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
24 And it came to pass
about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter
in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom.
And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 25 When she was brought
forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are,
am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the
signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said,
She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah
my son. And he knew her again no more.
NRSV - 11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up" -- for he feared that he too would die, like his brothers...
13 When Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep," 14 she put off her widow's garments, put on a veil, wrapped herself up, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. She saw that Shelah was grown up, yet she had not been given to him in marriage. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He went over to her at the road side, and said, "Come, let me come in to you," for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"
18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She replied, "Your signet and your cord, and the staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.
24 About three months
later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the whore;
moreover she is pregnant as a result of whoredom." And Judah said,
"Bring her out, and let her be burned." 25 As she was being brought
out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "It was the owner of these
who made me pregnant." And she said, "Take note, please, whose
these are, the signet and the cord and the staff." 26 Then Judah acknowledged
them and said, "She is more in the right than I, since I did not give
her to my son Shelah." And he did not lie with her again.
TEV - "Judah and Tamar" - 11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Return to your father's house and remain a widow until my son Shelah grows up." He said this because he was afraid that Shelah would be killed, as his brothers had been. So Tamar went back home. 12 After some time Judah's wife died. When he had finished the time of mourning, he and his friend Hirah of Adullam went to Timnah, where his sheep were being sheared. 13 Someone told Tamar that her father-in-law was going to Timnah to shear his sheep. 14 So she changed from the widow's clothes she had been wearing, covered her face with a veil, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, a town on the road to Timnah. As she well knew, Judah's youngest son Shelah was now grown up, and yet she had not been given to him in marriage. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, because she had her face covered. 16 He went over to her at the side of the road and said, "All right, how much do you charge?" (He did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.) She said, "What will you give me?" 17 He answered, "I will send you a young goat from my flock." She said, "All right, if you will give me something to keep as a pledge until you send the goat." 18 "What shall I give you as a pledge?" he asked. She answered, "Your seal with its cord and the walking stick you are carrying." He gave them to her. Then they had intercourse, and she became pregnant. 19 Tamar went home, took off her veil, and put her widow's clothes back on.
24 About three months later someone told Judah, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has been acting like a whore, and now she is pregnant." Judah ordered, "Take her out and burn her to death." 25 As she was being taken out, she sent word to her father-in-law: "I am pregnant by the man who owns these things. Look at them and see whose they are -- this seal with its cord and this walking stick." 26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is in the right. I have failed in my obligation to her -- I should have given her to my son Shelah in marriage." And Judah never had intercourse with her again.

And do not plan ways of harming one another.' 11 "But my people stubbornly refused to listen. They closed their minds 12 and made their hearts as hard as rock. Because they would not listen to the teaching which I sent through the prophets who lived long ago, I became very angry. 13 Because they did not listen when I spoke, I did not answer when they prayed. 14 Like a storm I swept them away to live in foreign countries. And the angel <32> came <1525> in unto her, and said <2036>,
Hail <5463>, [thou that art] highly favoured <5487>, the Lord
<2962> [is] with thee: blessed <2127> [art] thou among
<1722> women <1135>.
31 And, behold <2400>, thou shalt conceive <4815> in thy womb <1064>, and bring <5088> forth <5088> a son <5207>, and shalt call <2564> his name <3686> JESUS <2424>.

- 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city
of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name
was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And
the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured,
the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
46 And Mary said, My
soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from
henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty
hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is
on them that fear him from generation to generation.
NRSV - 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."
31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.
33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" 35 The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.
38 Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.
46 And Mary said, "My
soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from
now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done
great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who
fear him from generation to generation.
TEV - "The Birth of Jesus Is Announced" - 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. 27 He had a message for a girl promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. The girl's name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, "Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!" 29 Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. 30 The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. 31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, 33 and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!" 34 Mary said to the angel, "I am a virgin. How, then, can this be?" 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God. 36 Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. 37 For there is nothing that God cannot do." 38 "I am the Lord's servant," said Mary; "may it happen to me as you have said." And the angel left her.
"Mary's Song of Praise" - 46 Mary said, "My heart praises the Lord; 47 my soul is glad because of God my Savior, 48 for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, 49 because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; 50 from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. 51 He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. 52 He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.
"Kai <and> eiselthon <having gone in> pros <to> auten <her> eipen <he said>, chaire <Greetings, or Be full of joy>, kecharitomene <one having been favored>, ho <the> kurios <Lord> meta <with> sou <you>."
The NRSV correctly reads:
"And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."
It is only the
King James Version and other less accurate (and generally
older) versions that have the errors in Luk 1:28. They are based
upon the so-called Textus Receptus. (For a history of the
Textus Receptus, browse: http://www.bibletexts.com/kjv-tr.htm.)
Sometime during the transmission of Luk 1:28, copyists added two
different phrases that appear translated in the KJV: "the
angel" and "blessed art thou among women."

a fear <5401> on all <537>: and they glorified <1392>
God <2316>, saying <3004>, That a great <3173> prophet
<4396> is risen <1453> up among <1722> us; and, That God
<2316> hath visited <1980> his people <2992>.
KJV - 1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
11 And it came to pass
the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples
went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of
the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his
mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her,
Weep not. 14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood
still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15 And he that was
dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 16
And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great
prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
NRSV - 1 After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
11 Soon afterwards he
went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with
him. 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being
carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with
her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion
for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he came forward
and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young
man, I say to you, rise!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak,
and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and they glorified
God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God
has looked favorably on his people!"
TEV - "Jesus Heals a Roman Officer's Servant" - 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum. 2 A Roman officer there had a servant who was very dear to him; the man was sick and about to die. 3 When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant. 4 They came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, "This man really deserves your help. 5 He loves our people and he himself built a synagogue for us."
"Jesus Raises
a Widow's Son" - 11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a town named
Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12 Just as he arrived
at the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out. The dead man
was the only son of a woman who was a widow, and a large crowd from the
town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity
for her, and he said to her, "Don't cry." 14 Then he walked over
and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, "Young
man! Get up, I tell you!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk,
and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They all were filled with fear
and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us!" they
said; "God has come to save his people!" 17 This news about
Jesus went out through all the country and the surrounding territory.

KJV <Strong's #> - 9 ...ye [are] a chosen <1588> generation <1085>, a royal <934> priesthood <2406>, an holy <40> nation <1484>, a peculiar <4047> people <2992>; that ye should shew <1804> forth <1804> the praises <703> of him who hath called <2564> you out of darkness <4655> into <1519> his marvellous <2298> light <5457>: 10 Which <3588> in time <4218> past [were] not a people <2992>, but [are] now <3568> the people <2992> of God <2316>: which <3588> had not obtained <1653> mercy <1653>, but now <3568> have obtained <1653> mercy <1653>.
KJV - 9 ...ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
NRSV - 9 ...you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
TEV - "The Living Stone and the Holy Nation" - 9 But you are the chosen race, the King's priests, the holy nation, God's own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light. 10 At one time you were not God's people, but now you are his people; at one time you did not know God's mercy, but now you have received his mercy.

KJV <Strong's #> - 8 Finally <5056>, [be ye] all <3956> of one <3675> mind <3675>, having compassion <4835> one of another <4835>, love <5361> as brethren <5361>, [be] pitiful <2155>, [be] courteous <5391>: 9 Not rendering <591> evil <2556> for evil <2556>, or <2228> railing <3059> for railing <3059>: but contrariwise <5121> blessing <2129>; knowing <1492> that ye are thereunto <5124> called <2564>, that ye should inherit <2816> a blessing <2127>. 10 For he that will <2309> love <25> life <2222>, and see <1492> good <18> days <2250>, let him refrain <3973> his tongue <1100> from evil <2556>, and his lips <5491> that they speak <2980> no <3361> guile <1388>: 11 Let him eschew <1578> evil <2556>, and do <4160> good <18>; let him seek <2212> peace <1515>, and ensue <1377> it. 12 For the eyes <3788> of the Lord <2962> [are] over <1909> the righteous <1342>, and his ears <3775> [are open] unto their prayers <1162>: but the face <4383> of the Lord <2962> [is] against <1909> them that do <4160> evil <2556>.
KJV - 8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers:...
NRSV - 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called -- that you might inherit a blessing. 10 For "Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; 11 let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
TEV - "Suffering for Doing Right" - 8 To conclude: you must all have the same attitude and the same feelings; love one another as brothers, and be kind and humble with one another. 9 Do not pay back evil with evil or cursing with cursing; instead, pay back with a blessing, because a blessing is what God promised to give you when he called you. 10 As the scripture says, "Whoever wants to enjoy life and wishes to see good times, must keep from speaking evil and stop telling lies. 11 He must turn away from evil and do good; he must strive for peace with all his heart. 12 For the Lord watches over the righteous and listens to their prayers; but he opposes those who do evil."
Daniel C. Arichea and Eugene A. Nida (A Translator's Handbook on the First Letter from Peter, New York: United Bible Socieities, 1980, page 100) comment:
In accordance with his practice of using the Old Testament to support his arguments, Peter again quotes an Old Testament passage. This particular quotation is from Psalm 34.12-16, but with some modifications to fit his purpose. The quotation is introduced simply by the word "For" connecting it with the theme of the whole section, namely, good conduct. By introducing the quotation with As the scripture says, the TEV has made it explicit that what follows is a quotation from the Old Testament.

King James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers. In

Strong's numbers identify the Hebrew (OT) or Greek words (NT) from which the KJV words were translated, and they are enclosed in less-than and greater-than signs < >. Keep in mind that the Strong's numbers do not necessarily represent the Hebrew and Greek words in the original texts. They represent the Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated.
