KJV <Strong's #> - 14 ...Awake <1453> thou that sleepest <2518>, and arise <450> from the dead <3498>, and Christ <5547> shall give thee light <2017>.

KJV - 14 ...Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

NRSV - 14 ..."Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

TEV - "Living in the Light" - 11 Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light. (12 It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.) 13 And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed; 14 for anything that is clearly revealed becomes light. That is why it is said, "Wake up, sleeper, and rise from death, and Christ will shine on you."

NRSV - 18 ...the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

TEV - "The Benefits of Wisdom" - 18 The road the righteous travel is like the sunrise, getting brighter and brighter until daylight has come. 19 The road of the wicked, however, is dark as night. They fall, but cannot see what they have stumbled over.

KJV <Strong's #> - 16 For a just <06662> [man] falleth <05307> seven <07651> times, and riseth <06965> up again: but the wicked <07563> shall fall <03782> into mischief <07451>.

30 I went <05674> by the field <07704> of the slothful <06102>, and by the vineyard <03754> of the man <0120> void <02638> of understanding <03820>; 31 And, lo <02009>, it was all <03605> grown <05927> over <05927> with thorns <07063>, [and] nettles <02738> had covered <03680> the face <06440> thereof, and the stone <068> wall <01444> thereof was broken <02040> down <02040>. 32 Then I saw <02372>, [and] considered [it] well <03190>: I looked <07200> upon [it, and] received <03947> instruction <04148>. 33 [Yet] a little <04592> sleep <08142>, a little <04592> slumber <08572>, a little <04592> folding <02264> of the hands <03027> to sleep <07901>:

KJV - 16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; 31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. 32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. 33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

NRSV - 16 for though they fall seven times, they will rise again; but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

30 I passed by the field of one who was lazy, by the vineyard of a stupid person; 31 and see, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. 32 Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,

TEV - "...27..." - 15 Don't be like the wicked who scheme to rob an honest man or to take away his home. 16 No matter how often an honest man falls, he always gets up again; but disaster destroys the wicked.

"More Wise Sayings" - 30 I walked through the fields and vineyards of a lazy, stupid man. 31 They were full of thorn bushes and overgrown with weeds. The stone wall around them had fallen down. 32 I looked at this, thought about it, and learned a lesson from it: 33 Go ahead and take your nap; go ahead and sleep. Fold your hands and rest awhile, 34 but while you are asleep, poverty will attack you like an armed robber.

KJV <Strong's #> - 15 Slothfulness <06103> casteth <05307> into a deep <08639> sleep <03462>; and an idle <07423> soul <05315> shall suffer hunger <07456>. 16 He that keepeth <08104> the commandment <04687> keepeth <08104> his own soul <05315>; [but] he that despiseth <0959> his ways <01870> shall die <04191>.

23 The fear <03374> of the LORD <03068> [tendeth] to life <02416>: and [he that hath it] shall abide <03885> satisfied <07649>;...

KJV - 15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. 16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul;...

20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. 21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

23 The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied;...

NRSV - 15 Laziness brings on deep sleep; an idle person will suffer hunger. 16 Those who keep the commandment will live; those who are heedless of their ways will die.

20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future. 21 The human mind may devise many plans, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will be established.

23 The fear of the LORD is life indeed; filled with it one rests secure....

TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 12 The king's anger is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like welcome rain. 13 A stupid son can bring his father to ruin. A nagging wife is like water going drip-drip-drip. 14 A man can inherit a house and money from his parents, but only the LORD can give him a sensible wife. 15 Go ahead and be lazy; sleep on, but you will go hungry. 16 Keep God's laws and you will live longer; if you ignore them, you will die. 17 When you give to the poor, it is like lending to the LORD, and the LORD will pay you back. 18 Discipline your children while they are young enough to learn. If you don't, you are helping them destroy themselves. 19 If someone has a hot temper, let him take the consequences. If you get him out of trouble once, you will have to do it again. 20 If you listen to advice and are willing to learn, one day you will be wise. 21 People may plan all kinds of things, but the LORD's will is going to be done. 22 It is a disgrace to be greedy; poor people are better off than liars. 23 Obey the LORD and you will live a long life, content and safe from harm. 24 Some people are too lazy to put food in their own mouths. 25 Arrogance should be punished, so that people who don't know any better can learn a lesson. If you are wise, you will learn when you are corrected. 26 Only a shameful, disgraceful person would mistreat his father or turn his mother away from his home.

KJV <Strong's #> - 3 ...God <0430> said <0559>, Let there be light <0216>: and there was light <0216>.

26 And God <0430> said <0559>, Let us make <06213> man <0120> in our image <06754>, after our likeness <01823>: and let them have dominion <07287> over the fish <01710> of the sea <03220>, and over the fowl <05775> of the air <08064>, and over the cattle <0929>, and over all <03605> the earth <0776>, and over every <03605> creeping <07431> thing that creepeth <07430> upon the earth <0776>.

KJV - 3 ...God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

NRSV - 3 ...God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."

TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 1 In the beginning, when God created the universe, 2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water. 3 Then God commanded, "Let there be light" -- and light appeared. 4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness, 5 and he named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening passed and morning came -- that was the first day.

26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small."

KJV <Strong's #> - 1 Thus the heavens <08064> and the earth <0776> were finished <03615>, and all <03605> the host <06635> of them.

6 But there went <05927> up a mist <0108> from the earth <0776>, and watered <08248> the whole face <06440> of the ground <0127>. 7 And the LORD <03068> God <0430> formed <03335> man <0120> [of] the dust <06083> of the ground <0127>, and breathed <05301> into his nostrils <0639> the breath <05397> of life <02416>; and man <0120> became <01961> a living <02416> soul <05315>.

21 And the LORD <03068> God <0430> caused a deep <08639> sleep <03462> to fall <05307> upon Adam <0121>, and he slept <03462>: and he took <03947> one <0259> of his ribs <06763>, and closed <05462> up the flesh <01320> instead <08478> thereof;

KJV - 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;...

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept:...

NRSV - 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude.

6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground -- 7 then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.

21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.

TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 1 And so the whole universe was completed. 2 By the seventh day God finished what he had been doing and stopped working. 3 He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day, because by that day he had completed his creation and stopped working. 4a And that is how the universe was created.

"The Garden of Eden" - 4b When the LORD God made the universe, 5 there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 6 but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground. 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.

21 Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 23 Then the man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind -- Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. "Woman' is her name because she was taken out of man." 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

KJV <Strong's #> - 4 Give <05414> not sleep <08142> to thine eyes <05869>, nor slumber <08572> to thine eyelids <06079>.

9 How <05704> long <05704> wilt thou sleep <07901>, O sluggard <06102>? when <04970> wilt thou arise <06965> out of thy sleep <08142>?

KJV - 4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

NRSV - 4 Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber;

9 How long will you lie there, O lazybones? When will you rise from your sleep?

TEV - "More Warnings" - 1 Son, have you promised to be responsible for someone else's debts? 2 Have you been caught by your own words, trapped by your own promises? 3 Well then, son, you are in that man's power, but this is how to get out of it: hurry to him, and beg him to release you. 4 Don't let yourself go to sleep or even stop to rest. 5 Get out of the trap like a bird or a deer escaping from a hunter. 6 Lazy people should learn a lesson from the way ants live. 7 They have no leader, chief, or ruler, 8 but they store up their food during the summer, getting ready for winter. 9 How long is the lazy man going to lie around? When is he ever going to get up? 10 "I'll just take a short nap," he says; "I'll fold my hands and rest a while." 11 But while he sleeps, poverty will attack him like an armed robber.

KJV <Strong's #> - 9 And the LORD <03068> God <0430> called <07121> unto Adam <0120>, and said <0559> unto him, Where <0335> [art] thou? 10 And he said <0559>, I heard <08085> thy voice <06963> in the garden <01588>, and I was afraid <03372>, because <03588> I [was] naked <05903>; and I hid <02244> myself. 11 And he said <0559>, Who <04310> told <05046> thee that thou [wast] naked <05903>? And the woman <0802> said <0559>, The serpent <05175> beguiled <05377> me, and I did eat <0398>.

17 And unto Adam <0121> he said <0559>, Because <03588> thou hast hearkened <08085> unto the voice <06963> of thy wife <0802>, and hast eaten <0398> of the tree <06086>, of which <0834> I commanded <06680> thee, saying <0559>, Thou shalt not eat <0398> of it: cursed <0779> [is] the ground <0127> for thy sake <05668>; in sorrow <06093> shalt thou eat <0398> [of] it all <03605> the days <03117> of thy life <02416>; 18 Thorns <06975> also and thistles <01863> shall it bring <06779> forth <06779> to thee; and thou shalt eat <0398> the herb <06212> of the field <07704>;

22 And the LORD <03068> God <0430> said <0559>, Behold <02005>, the man <0120> is become <01961> as one <0259> of us, to know <03045> good <02896> and evil <07451>: and now <06258>, lest <06435> he put <07971> forth <07971> his hand <03027>, and take <03947> also <01571> of the tree <06086> of life <02416>, and eat <0398>, and live <02425> for ever <05769>: 23 Therefore the LORD <03068> God <0430> sent <07971> him forth from the garden <01588> of Eden <05731>, to till <05647> the ground <0127> from whence he was taken <03947>. 24 So he drove <01644> out the man <0120>; and he placed <07931> at the east <06924> of the garden <01588> of Eden <05731> Cherubims <03742>, and a flaming <03858> sword <02719> which turned <02015> every way, to keep <08104> the way of the tree <06086> of life <02416>.

KJV - 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee;...

22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man;...

NRSV - 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent tricked me, and I ate."

17 And to the man he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, "You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.

22 Then the LORD God said, "See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever" -- 23 therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life.

TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 7 As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. 8 That evening they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, and they hid from him among the trees. 9 But the LORD God called out to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." 11 "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?" 12 The man answered, "The woman you put here with me gave me the fruit, and I ate it." 13 The LORD God asked the woman, "Why did you do this?" She replied, "The snake tricked me into eating it."

"God Pronounces Judgment" - 17 And he said to the man, "You listened to your wife and ate the fruit which I told you not to eat. Because of what you have done, the ground will be under a curse. You will have to work hard all your life to make it produce enough food for you. 18 It will produce weeds and thorns, and you will have to eat wild plants. 19 You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed. You were made from soil, and you will become soil again."

"Adam and Eve Are Sent Out of the Garden" - 22 Then the LORD God said, "Now the man has become like one of us and has knowledge of what is good and what is bad. He must not be allowed to take fruit from the tree that gives life, eat it, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God sent him out of the Garden of Eden and made him cultivate the soil from which he had been formed. 24 Then at the east side of the garden he put living creatures and a flaming sword which turned in all directions. This was to keep anyone from coming near the tree that gives life.

KJV <Strong's #> - 28 The prophet <05030> that hath a dream <02472>, let him tell <05608> a dream <02472>; and he that hath my word <01697>, let him speak <01696> my word <01697> faithfully <0571>. What <04100> [is] the chaff <08401> to the wheat <01250>? saith <05002> the LORD <03068>.

KJV - 28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord.

NRSV - 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the LORD.

TEV - "Jeremiah's Message about the Prophets" - 23 "I am a God who is everywhere and not in one place only. 24 No one can hide where I cannot see him. Do you not know that I am everywhere in heaven and on earth? 25 I know what those prophets have said who speak lies in my name and claim that I have given them my messages in their dreams. 26 How much longer will those prophets mislead my people with the lies they have invented? 27 They think that the dreams they tell will make my people forget me, just as their fathers forgot me and turned to Baal. 28 The prophet who has had a dream should say it is only a dream, but the prophet who has heard my message should proclaim that message faithfully. What good is straw compared with wheat? 29 My message is like a fire and like a hammer that breaks rocks in pieces.

KJV <Strong's #> - 12 The night <3571> is far spent <4298>, the day <2250> is at <1448> hand <1448>: let us therefore <3767> cast <659> off <659> the works <2041> of darkness <4655>, and let us put <1746> on <1746> the armour <3696> of light <5457>.

KJV - 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

NRSV - 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light;

TEV - "Duties toward One Another" - 11 You must do this, because you know that the time has come for you to wake up from your sleep. For the moment when we will be saved is closer now than it was when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over, day is almost here. Let us stop doing the things that belong to the dark, and let us take up weapons for fighting in the light. 13 Let us conduct ourselves properly, as people who live in the light of day -- no orgies or drunkenness, no immorality or indecency, no fighting or jealousy.14 But take up the weapons of the Lord Jesus Christ, and stop paying attention to your sinful nature and satisfying its desires.

KJV <Strong's #> - 2 ...Saul <07586> arose <06965>, and went <03381> down <03381> to the wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128>, having three <07969> thousand <0505> chosen <0970> men <0376> of Israel <03478> with him, to seek <01245> David <01732> in the wilderness <04057> of Ziph <02128>.

4 David <01732> therefore sent <07971> out spies <07270>, and understood <03045> that Saul <07586> was come <0935> in very <03559> deed <03559>.

6 Then answered <06030> David <01732> and said <0559> to Ahimelech <0288> the Hittite <02850>, and to Abishai <052> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>, brother <0251> to Joab <03097>, saying <0559>, Who <04310> will go <03381> down <03381> with me to Saul <07586> to the camp <04264>? And Abishai <052> said <0559>, I will go <03381> down <03381> with thee. 7 So David <01732> and Abishai <052> came <0935> to the people <05971> by night <03915>: and, behold <02009>, Saul <07586> lay <07901> sleeping <03463> within the trench <04570>, and his spear <02595> stuck <04600> in the ground <0776> at his bolster <04763>: but Abner <074> and the people <05971> lay <07901> round <05439> about him. 8 Then said <0559> Abishai <052> to David <01732>, God <0430> hath delivered <05462> thine enemy <0341> into thine hand <03027> this day <03117>:...

9 And David <01732> said <0559> to Abishai <052>, Destroy <07843> him not: for who <04310> can stretch <07971> forth his hand <03027> against the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>, and be guiltless <05352>?

12 So David <01732> took <03947> the spear <02595> and the cruse <06835> of water <04325> from Saul's <07586> bolster <04763>; and they gat <03212> them away <03212>, and no <0369> man saw <07200> [it], nor <0369> knew <03045> [it], neither <0369> awaked <06974>: for they [were] all <03605> asleep <03463>;...

13 Then David <01732> went <05674> over <05674> to the other <05676> side <05676>, and stood <05975> on <05921> the top <07218> of an hill <02022> afar <07350> off; a great <07227> space <04725> [being] between <0996> them: 14 And David <01732> cried <07121> to the people <05971>, and to Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, saying <0559>, Answerest <06030> thou not, Abner <074>? Then Abner <074> answered <06030> and said <0559>, Who <04310> [art] thou [that] criest <07121> to the king <04428>?

17 And Saul <07586> knew <05234> David's <01732> voice <06963>, and said <0559>, [Is] this <02088> thy voice <06963>, my son <01121> David <01732>?...

21 Then said <0559> Saul <07586>, I have sinned <02398>: return <07725>, my son <01121> David <01732>: for I will no <03808> more <05750> do thee harm <07489>, because my soul <05315> was precious <03365> in thine eyes <05869> this <02088> day <03117>: behold <02009>, I have played the fool <05528>, and have erred <07683> exceedingly. 22 And David <01732> answered <06030> and said <0559>, Behold <02009> the king's <04428> spear <02595>! and let one <0259> of the young <05288> men come <05674> over <05674> and fetch <03947> it. 23 The LORD <03068> render <07725> to every man <0376> his righteousness <06666> and his faithfulness <0530>:...

KJV - 2 ...Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.

6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee. 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. 8 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day:...

9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless?

12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep;...

13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them: 14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?

17 And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David?...

21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. 22 And David answered and said, Behold the king's spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it. 23 The Lord render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness:...

NRSV - 2 ...Saul rose and went down to the Wilderness of Ziph, with three thousand chosen men of Israel, to seek David in the Wilderness of Ziph.

4 David sent out spies, and learned that Saul had indeed arrived.

6 Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab's brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, "Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?" Abishai said, "I will go down with you." 7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night; there Saul lay sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the army lay around him. 8 Abishai said to David, "God has given your enemy into your hand today;...

9 But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can raise his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?"

12 So David took the spear that was at Saul's head and the water jar, and they went away. No one saw it, or knew it, nor did anyone awake; for they were all asleep,...

13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on top of a hill far away, with a great distance between them. 14 David called to the army and to Abner son of Ner, saying, "Abner! Will you not answer?" Then Abner replied, "Who are you that calls to the king?"

17 Saul recognized David's voice, and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?"...

21 Then Saul said, "I have done wrong; come back, my son David, for I will never harm you again, because my life was precious in your sight today; I have been a fool, and have made a great mistake." 22 David replied, "Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and get it. 23 The LORD rewards everyone for his righteousness and his faithfulness;...

TEV - "David Spares Saul's Life Again" - 1 Some men from Ziph came to Saul at Gibeah and told him that David was hiding on Mount Hachilah at the edge of the Judean wilderness. 2 Saul went at once with three thousand of the best soldiers in Israel to the wilderness of Ziph to look for David, 3 and camped by the road on Mount Hachilah. David was still in the wilderness, and when he learned that Saul had come to look for him, 4 he sent spies and found out that Saul was indeed there. 5 He went at once and located the exact place where Saul and Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, slept. Saul slept inside the camp, and his men camped around him. 6 Then David asked Ahimelech the Hittite, and Abishai the brother of Joab (their mother was Zeruiah), "Which of you two will go to Saul's camp with me?" "I will," Abishai answered. 7 So that night David and Abishai entered Saul's camp and found Saul sleeping in the center of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the troops were sleeping around him. 8 Abishai said to David, "God has put your enemy in your power tonight. Now let me plunge his own spear through him and pin him to the ground with just one blow -- I won't have to strike twice!" 9 But David said, "You must not harm him! The LORD will certainly punish whoever harms his chosen king. 10 By the living LORD," David continued, "I know that the LORD himself will kill Saul, either when his time comes to die a natural death or when he dies in battle. 11 The LORD forbid that I should try to harm the one whom the LORD has made king! Let's take his spear and his water jar, and go." 12 So David took the spear and the water jar from right beside Saul's head, and he and Abishai left. No one saw it or knew what had happened or even woke up -- they were all sound asleep, because the LORD had sent a heavy sleep on them all. 13 Then David crossed over to the other side of the valley to the top of the hill, a safe distance away, 14 and shouted to Saul's troops and to Abner, "Abner! Can you hear me?" "Who is that shouting and waking up the king?" Abner asked. 15 David answered, "Abner, aren't you the greatest man in Israel? So why aren't you protecting your master, the king? Just now someone entered the camp to kill your master. 16 You failed in your duty, Abner! I swear by the living LORD that all of you deserve to die, because you have not protected your master, whom the LORD made king. Look! Where is the king's spear? Where is the water jar that was right by his head?" 17 Saul recognized David's voice and asked, "David, is that you, my son?" "Yes, Your Majesty," David answered. 18 And he added, "Why, sir, are you still pursuing me, your servant? What have I done? What crime have I committed? 19 Your Majesty, listen to what I have to say. If it is the LORD who has turned you against me, an offering to him will make him change his mind; but if men have done it, may the LORD's curse fall on them. For they have driven me out from the LORD's land to a country where I can only worship foreign gods. 20 Don't let me be killed on foreign soil, away from the LORD. Why should the king of Israel come to kill a flea like me? Why should he hunt me down like a wild bird?" 21 Saul answered, "I have done wrong. Come back, David, my son! I will never harm you again, because you have spared my life tonight. I have been a fool! I have done a terrible thing!" 22 David replied, "Here is your spear, Your Majesty. Let one of your men come over and get it. 23 The LORD rewards those who are faithful and righteous. Today he put you in my power, but I did not harm you, whom the LORD made king. 24 Just as I have spared your life today, may the LORD do the same to me and free me from all troubles!" 25 Saul said to David, "God bless you, my son! You will succeed in everything you do!" So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.

KJV <Strong's #> - 10 And Jacob <03290> went <03318> out from Beersheba <0884>, and went <03212> toward Haran <02771>. 11 And he lighted <06293> upon a certain place <04725>, and tarried <03885> there <08033> all <03885> night, because <03588> the sun <08121> was set <0935>; and he took <03947> of the stones <068> of that place <04725>, and put <07760> [them for] his pillows <04763>, and lay <07901> down in that place <04725> to sleep <07901>. 12 And he dreamed <02492>, and behold <02009> a ladder <05551> set <05324> up on the earth <0776>, and the top <07218> of it reached <05060> to heaven <08064>: and behold <02009> the angels <04397> of God <0430> ascending <05927> and descending <03381> on it. 13 And, behold <02009>, the LORD <03068> stood <05324> above <05921> it, and said <0559>, I [am] the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Abraham <085> thy father <01>, and the God <0430> of Isaac <03327>: the land <0776> whereon thou liest <07901>, to thee will I give <05414> it, and to thy seed <02233>;

15 And, behold <02009>, I [am] with thee, and will keep <08104> thee in all <03605> [places] whither <0834> thou goest <03212>, and will bring <07725> thee again <07725> into <0413> this <02063> land <0127>; for I will not leave <05800> thee, until I have done <06213> [that] which <0834> I have spoken <01696> to thee of. 16 And Jacob <03290> awaked <03364> out of his sleep <08142>, and he said <0559>, Surely <0403> the LORD <03068> is in this <02088> place <04725>; and I knew <03045> [it] not.

KJV - 10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran. 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

NRSV - 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And the LORD stood beside him and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring;

15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place -- and I did not know it!"

TEV - "Jacob's Dream at Bethel" - 10 Jacob left Beersheba and started toward Haran. 11 At sunset he came to a holy place and camped there. He lay down to sleep, resting his head on a stone. 12 He dreamed that he saw a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and coming down on it. 13 And there was the LORD standing beside him. "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham and Isaac," he said. "I will give to you and to your descendants this land on which you are lying. 14 They will be as numerous as the specks of dust on the earth. They will extend their territory in all directions, and through you and your descendants I will bless all the nations. 15 Remember, I will be with you and protect you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done all that I have promised you." 16 Jacob woke up and said, "The LORD is here! He is in this place, and I didn't know it!" 17 He was afraid and said, "What a terrifying place this is! It must be the house of God; it must be the gate that opens into heaven."

KJV <Strong's #> - 1 Jesus <2424> went <4198> unto the mount <3735> of Olives <1636>. 2 And early <3722> in the morning he came <3854> again <3825> into <1519> the temple <2411>, and all <3956> the people <2992> came <2064> unto him; and he sat <2523> down <2523>, and taught <1321> them.

KJV - 1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

NRSV - 1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 [[Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."

TEV - "The Woman Caught in Adultery" - 1 {Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 "Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?" 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.

"Jesus the Light of the World" - 12 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. "I am the light of the world," he said. "Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness." 13 The Pharisees said to him, "Now you are testifying on your own behalf; what you say proves nothing."

KJV <Strong's #> - 7 And upon the first <3391> [day] of the week <4521>, when the disciples <3101> came <4863> together <4863> to break <2806> bread <740>, Paul <3972> preached <1256> unto them, ready <3195> to depart <1826> on the morrow <1887>; and continued <3905> his speech <3056> until <3360> midnight <3317>. 8 And there were many <2425> lights <2985> in the upper <5250> chamber <5253>, where <3757> they were gathered <4863> together <4863>. 9 And there sat <2521> in a window <2376> a certain <5100> young <3494> man <3494> named <3686> Eutychus <2161>, being fallen <2702> into a deep <901> sleep <5258>: and as Paul <3972> was long <4119> preaching <1256>, he sunk <2702> down <2736> with sleep <5258>, and fell <4098> down from the third <5152> loft <5152>, and was taken <142> up dead <3498>. 10 And Paul <3972> went <2597> down <2597>, and fell <1968> on <1968> him, and embracing <4843> [him] said <2036>, Trouble <2350> not yourselves; for his life <5590> is in him. 11 When he therefore <3767> was come <305> up again, and had broken <2806> bread <740>, and eaten <1089>, and talked <3656> a long <2425> while, even till <891> break <827> of day <827>, so <3779> he departed <1831>. 12 And they brought <71> the young <3816> man alive <2198>, and were not a little <3357> comforted <3870>.

KJV - 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. 12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.

NRSV - 7 On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul was holding a discussion with them; since he intended to leave the next day, he continued speaking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. 9 A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. 10 But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him." 11 Then Paul went upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he continued to converse with them until dawn; then he left. 12 Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive and were not a little comforted.

TEV - "Paul's Last Visit to Troas" - 7 On Saturday evening we gathered together for the fellowship meal. Paul spoke to the people and kept on speaking until midnight, since he was going to leave the next day. 8 Many lamps were burning in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window, and as Paul kept on talking, Eutychus got sleepier and sleepier, until he finally went sound asleep and fell from the third story to the ground. When they picked him up, he was dead. 10 But Paul went down and threw himself on him and hugged him. "Don't worry," he said, "he is still alive!" 11 Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. After talking with them for a long time, even until sunrise, Paul left. 12 They took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

KJV <Strong's #> - 11 ...now <2035> [it is] high time <5610> to awake <1453> out of sleep <5258>: for now <3568> [is] our salvation <4991> nearer <1452> than <2228> when <3753> we believed <4100>.

KJV - 11 ...now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

NRSV - 11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;

KJV <Strong's #> - 22 ...as in Adam <76> all <3956> die <599>, even <2532> so <3779> in Christ <5547> shall all <3956> be made <2227> alive <2227>.

45 And so <3779> it is written <1125>, The first <4413> man <444> Adam <76> was made <1096> a living <2198> soul <5590>; the last <2078> Adam <76> [was made] a quickening <2227> spirit <4151>.

47 The first <4413> man <444> [is] of the earth <1093>, earthy <5517>: the second <1208> man <444> [is] the Lord <2962> from heaven <3772>. 48 As [is] the earthy <5517>, such <5108> [are] they also <2532> that are earthy <5517>: and as [is] the heavenly <2032>, such <5108> [are] they also <2532> that are heavenly <2032>.

51 Behold <2400>, I shew <3004> you a mystery <3466>; We shall not all <3956> sleep <2837>, but we shall all <3956> be changed <236>, 52 In a moment <823>, in the twinkling <4493> of an eye <3788>, at <1722> the last <2078> trump <4536>:...

KJV - 22 ...as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all slee``p, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:...

NRSV - 22 ...as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ.

45 Thus it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven.

51 Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet...

TEV - "Our Resurrection" - 20 But the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised. 21 For just as death came by means of a man, in the same way the rising from death comes by means of a man. 22 For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. 23 But each one will be raised in his proper order: Christ, first of all; then, at the time of his coming, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come; Christ will overcome all spiritual rulers, authorities, and powers, and will hand over the Kingdom to God the Father. 25 For Christ must rule until God defeats all enemies and puts them under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be defeated will be death.

"The Resurrection Body" - 42 This is how it will be when the dead are raised to life. When the body is buried, it is mortal; when raised, it will be immortal. 43 When buried, it is ugly and weak; when raised, it will be beautiful and strong. 44 When buried, it is a physical body; when raised, it will be a spiritual body. There is, of course, a physical body, so there has to be a spiritual body. 45 For the scripture says, "The first man, Adam, was created a living being"; but the last Adam is the life-giving Spirit. 46 It is not the spiritual that comes first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. 47 The first Adam, made of earth, came from the earth; the second Adam came from heaven. 48 Those who belong to the earth are like the one who was made of earth; those who are of heaven are like the one who came from heaven. 49 Just as we wear the likeness of the man made of earth, so we will wear the likeness of the Man from heaven. 50 What I mean, brothers, is that what is made of flesh and blood cannot share in God's Kingdom, and what is mortal cannot possess immortality. 51...52 Listen to this secret truth: we shall not all die, but when the last trumpet sounds, we shall all be changed in an instant, as quickly as the blinking of an eye. For when the trumpet sounds, the dead will be raised, never to die again, and we shall all be changed. 53 For what is mortal must be changed into what is immortal; what will die must be changed into what cannot die. 54 So when this takes place, and the mortal has been changed into the immortal, then the scripture will come true: "Death is destroyed; victory is complete!"

KJV <Strong's #> - 1 But of the times <5550> and the seasons <2540>, brethren <80>, ye have <2192> no <3756> need <5532> that I write <1125> unto you.

5 Ye are all <3956> the children <5207> of light <5457>, and the children <5207> of the day <2250>: we are not of the night <3571>, nor <3761> of darkness <4655>. 6 Therefore <3767> let us not sleep <2518>, as [do] others <3062>;...

23 And the very <846> God <2316> of peace <1515> sanctify <37> you wholly <3651>; and [I pray God] your <3588> whole <3648> spirit <4151> and soul <5590> and body <4983> be preserved <5083> blameless <274> unto the coming <3952> of our Lord <2962> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>.

28 The grace <5485> of our Lord <2962> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> [be] with you. Amen <281>.

KJV - 1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others;...

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen...

NRSV - 1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you.

5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then let us not fall asleep as others do,...

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

TEV - "Be Ready for the Lord's Coming" - 1 There is no need to write you, brothers, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. 3 When people say, "Everything is quiet and safe," then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. 5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober.

"Final Instructions and Greetings" - 19 Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; 20 do not despise inspired messages. 21 Put all things to the test: keep what is good 22 and avoid every kind of evil. 23 May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being -- spirit, soul, and body -- free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful. 25 Pray also for us, brothers. 26 Greet all the believers with a brotherly kiss. 27 I urge you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

KJV

King James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

In the KJV texts above, the strike-through words are those that were not in the original Hebrew (OT), Aramaic (Daniel only), or Greek (NT) texts of the Bible. [Bold-type bracketed words] are additions or corrections to enable the KJV text to better conform to what today's scholars believe to have been the original text, as published in the United Bible Society's definitive Hebrew Old Testament (Biblica Hebraica Stuttsgartensia) and Greek New Testament, 4th Revised Edition). [Regular-type bracketed words] are those words that are italized in the printed edition of the KJV. They are words that were added by the KJV translators without any corresponding Hebrew or Greek words.

Strong's numbers

Strong's numbers identify the Hebrew (OT) or Greek words (NT) from which the KJV words were translated, and they are enclosed in less-than and greater-than signs < >. Keep in mind that the Strong's numbers do not necessarily represent the Hebrew and Greek words in the original texts. They represent the Hebrew and Greek texts from which the KJV was translated. The following two resources are available to use the Strong's numbers:

On each Bible citation toolbar -- You will find links to Strong's Heb and Strong's Gr lexicons, which will enable you to use the Strong's numbers to explore the Hebrew and Greek words in the texts from which the KJV was translated. When inputting Strong's number into one of those online lexicons, delete any preceding zeros (0's). The easiest way to do this is to copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the number (1 to 4 digits) from the KJV text to the online lexicon's input field, then click on the lexicon's "Find" button.

On each Bible citation toolbar and S&H toolbar -- You will find a Strong's S&H link. This provides links to descriptions of those Hebrew and Greek words that are used in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Each word is identified by its respective Strong's numbers.
