"God and Possessions" - 24 "No one can be a slave of two masters; he will hate one and love the other; he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25 "This is why I tell you: do not be worried about the food and drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your body. After all, isn't life worth more than food? And isn't the body worth more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren't you worth much more than birds? 27 Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it? 28 "And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves. 29 But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers. 30 It is God who clothes the wild grass -- grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, burned up in the oven. Won't he be all the more sure to clothe you? Your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things. 33 Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things. 34 So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.

[17-21] ...As for the gifts which she [Wisdom] bestows or bequeathes (lehanhil, v. 21), these include material prosperity, which, however, as in vv. 10f, is distinguished from vulgar opulence. The fruit of Wisdom is better than gold and her produce better than silver. What she offers is wealth or property (yes, v. 21) with kabod and sedaqa. This is not meretricious or speculative wealth; it is located in a framework of values and is an ingredient of a way of life which bestows gravitas and social wholeness. Hence wealth with kabod is solid wealth or wealth with a basis in a traditional evaluation of what constitutes the good life (hon 'ateq, v. 18). The paradox is that when wealth is the chief end of life it corrupts, whereas when it is subordinated to wisdom it may be enjoyed as an aspect of welfare and honour... What Wisdom gives essentially is a way of life which possesses ethical fitness and equity (v. 20).

TEV - "Hezekiah's Wealth and Splendor" - 27 King Hezekiah became very wealthy, and everyone held him in honor. He had storerooms built for his gold, silver, precious stones, spices, shields, and other valuable objects. 28 In addition, he had storehouses built for his grain, wine, and olive oil; barns for his cattle; and pens for his sheep. 29 Besides all this, God gave him sheep and cattle and so much other wealth that he built many cities. 30 It was King Hezekiah who blocked the outlet for Gihon Spring and channeled the water to flow through a tunnel to a point inside the walls of Jerusalem. But their time to rob and betray will end, and they themselves will become victims of robbery and treachery. 2 LORD, have mercy on us. We have put our hope in you. Protect us day by day and save us in times of trouble. 3 When you fight for us, nations run away from the noise of battle. 4 Their belongings are pounced upon and taken as loot. 5 How great the LORD is! He rules over everything. He will fill Jerusalem with justice and integrity 6 and give stability to the nation. He always protects his people and gives them wisdom and knowledge. Their greatest treasure is their reverence for the LORD.

that the Amalekites had taken; and David rescued his two wives. 19 Nothing

that had been taken; David brought back everything.
TEV - "The War against the Amalekites" - 1 Two days later David and his men arrived back at Ziklag. The Amalekites had raided southern Judah and attacked Ziklag. They had burned down the town 2 and captured all the women; they had not killed anyone, but had taken everyone with them when they left. 3 When David and his men arrived, they found that the town had been burned down and that their wives, sons, and daughters had been carried away. 4 David and his men started crying and did not stop until they were completely exhausted. 5 Even David's two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail, had been taken away. 6 David was now in great trouble, because his men were all very bitter about losing their children, and they were threatening to stone him; but the LORD his God gave him courage. 7 David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the ephod," and Abiathar brought it to him. 8 David asked the LORD, "Shall I go after those raiders? And will I catch them?" He answered, "Go after them; you will catch them and rescue the captives." 9 So David and his six hundred men started out, and when they arrived at Besor Brook, some of them stayed there. 10 David continued on his way with four hundred men; the other two hundred men were too tired to cross the brook and so stayed behind. 11 The men with David found an Egyptian boy out in the country and brought him to David. They gave him some food and water, 12 some dried figs, and two bunches of raisins. After he had eaten, his strength returned; he had not had anything to eat or drink for three full days. 13 David asked him, "Who is your master, and where are you from?" "I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite," he answered. Robert G. Bratcher and WIlliam D. Reyburn (A Handbook on Psalms, New York: United Bible Societies, 1991, p. 479) comment:...The Masoretic Text is literally "the constant love of God (is) all day," which TEV has translated "God's faithfulness is eternal" (similarly Weiser; TOB, NJV, AT, GECL, SPCL). But this statement seems inappropriate in the context, and other translations are proposed. There are several ways in which the text has been changed:
(1) following in part the Syriac, instead of the Masoretic Text "constant love of God," read "against the godly," and join the phrase "all the day" with what follows in verse 3 (so Oesterley; RSV, FRCL, NEB, ZUR also has "against the godly" but keeps "all the day" with this line instead of joining it to the next); (2) following in part the Septuagint, take the Hebrew word chesed (see 5.7) in its Aramaic sense of "infamy" and translate "hero of infamy," and join "all the day" with what follows in verse 3 (BJ, NJB, FRCL, NAB);(3) delete "the constant love of God" as a later gloss (Briggs).
The Masoretic Text can be translated, but the meaning it provides does not seem as appropriate to the context as that supplied by the proposed changes in the Hebrew text. A.A. Anderson (New Century Bible: The Book of Psalms, Volume 1, Attic Press, Greenwood, SC: 1972, page 404) comments: against the godly: so RSV following S [Syriac] and reading 'el hasid; M.T. [Masoretic Text] has 'the mercy of God' (RV). If M.T. has preserved the original text, we could render: 'Why do you brag about evil, O man of (ruthless) might? (Don't you see that) the Covenant loyalty of God (lasts) continually?' C. Schedl (BZ, N.F, v (1961), pp. 259f.) links the Hebrew hsd with its Syriac cognate which comes from 'to revile, scorn', and M.T. could be rendered '(why do you ) revile God all day long?', regarding hsd as a pi'el infinitive absolute used instead of a finite verb (cf. GK 113y).

TEV - "Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath" - 10 One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in a synagogue. 11 A woman there had an evil spirit that had kept her sick for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called out to her, "Woman, you are free from your sickness!" 13 He placed his hands on her, and at once she straightened herself up and praised God. 14 The official of the synagogue was angry that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, so he spoke up and said to the people, "There are six days in which we should work; so come during those days and be healed, but not on the Sabbath!"

TEV - "False Teaching and True Riches" - 6 Well, religion does make a person very rich, if he is satisfied with what he has. 7 What did we bring into the world? Nothing! Nothing! 8 So then, if we have food and clothes, that should be enough for us. 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are caught in the trap of many foolish and harmful desires, which pull them down to ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a source of all kinds of evil. Some have been so eager to have it that they have wandered away from the faith and have broken their hearts with many sorrows.
"Personal Instructions" - 11 But you, man of God, avoid all these things. Strive for righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. 12 Run your best in the race of faith, and win eternal life for yourself; for it was to this life that God called you when you firmly professed your faith before many witnesses. 13 Before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who firmly professed his faith before Pontius Pilate, I command you 14 to obey your orders and keep them faithfully until the Day when our Lord Jesus Christ will appear. 15 His appearing will be brought about at the right time by God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. 16 He alone is immortal; he lives in the light that no one can approach. James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's
1769 revision of the KJV. Almost all of today's printed and electronic
editions of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's 1769 revision,
which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include
the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were in the original
1611 edition of the KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite
different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV,
there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.
