KJV texts | King
James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision
of the KJV. Today's editions of the KJV are based upon Dr.
Blayney's revision, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors,
does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were
in the original 1611 KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite
different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV,
there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

GT - Jer 23 |
KJV
- 17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great
power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
NRSV - 17 Ah Lord GOD! It is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
TEV - "Jeremiah's Prayer" - 16 After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch, I prayed, 17 "Sovereign LORD, you made the earth and the sky by your great power and might; nothing is too difficult for you. 18 You have shown constant love to thousands, but you also punish people for the sins of their parents. You are a great and powerful God; you are the LORD Almighty. 19 You make wise plans and do mighty things; you see everything that people do, and you reward them according to their actions. 20 Long ago you performed miracles and wonders in Egypt, and you have continued to perform them to this day, both in Israel and among all the other nations, so that you are now known everywhere. 21 By means of miracles and wonders that terrified our enemies, you used your power and might to bring your people Israel out of Egypt.
RR1 - Psa 89 |
KJV - 5 ...the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
7 God is greatly to be
feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them
that are about him.
NRSV - 5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.
7 a God feared
in the council of the holy ones, great and awesome above all that are around
him?
TEV - "A Hymn in Time of National Trouble" - 5 The heavens sing of the wonderful things you do; the holy ones sing of your faithfulness, LORD. 6 No one in heaven is like you, LORD; none of the heavenly beings is your equal. 7 You are feared in the council of the holy ones; they all stand in awe of you.
RR2 - Psa 104 |
KJV - 14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
16 The trees of the Lord
are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; 17 Where the
birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. 18 The
high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. 19
He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.
NRSV - 14 You cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth,
16 The trees of
the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. 17 In
them the birds build their nests; the stork has its home in the fir trees. 18
The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the coneys.
19 You have made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting.
TEV - "In Praise of the Creator" - 10 You make springs flow in the valleys, and rivers run between the hills. 11 They provide water for the wild animals; there the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 In the trees near by, the birds make their nests and sing. 13 From the sky you send rain on the hills, and the earth is filled with your blessings. 14 You make grass grow for the cattle and plants for man to use, so that he can grow his crops 15 and produce wine to make him happy, olive oil to make him cheerful, and bread to give him strength. 16 The cedars of Lebanon get plenty of rain -- the LORD's own trees, which he planted. 17 There the birds build their nests; the storks nest in the fir trees. 18 The wild goats live in the high mountains, and the rock badgers hide in the cliffs. 19 You created the moon to mark the months; the sun knows the time to set. 20 You made the night, and in the darkness all the wild animals come out. 21 The young lions roar while they hunt, looking for the food that God provides. 22 When the sun rises, they go back and lie down in their dens. 23 Then people go out to do their work and keep working until evening.
RR3 - Psa 111 |
KJV - 4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
NRSV - 4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the LORD is gracious and merciful.
TEV - "In Praise of the LORD" - 1 Praise the LORD! With all my heart I will thank the LORD in the assembly of his people. 2 How wonderful are the things the LORD does! All who are delighted with them want to understand them. 3 All he does is full of honor and majesty; his righteousness is eternal. 4 The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful. 5 He provides food for those who honor him; he never forgets his covenant. 6 He has shown his power to his people by giving them the lands of foreigners.
B1 - Job 37 |
KJV - 14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
NRSV - 14 "Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God.
TEV - "The Speeches of Elihu" - 13 God sends rain to water the earth; he may send it to punish men, or to show them his favor. 14 Pause a moment, Job, and listen; consider the wonderful things God does. 15 Do you know how God gives the command and makes lightning flash from the clouds? 16 Do you know how clouds float in the sky, the work of God's amazing skill? 17 No, you can only suffer in the heat when the south wind oppresses the land. 18 Can you help God stretch out the sky and make it as hard as polished metal? 19 Teach us what to say to God; our minds are blank; we have nothing to say.
B2 - Job 38 |
KJV - 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
6 Whereupon are the foundations
thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7 When the morning
stars sang together, and all the sons of God [heavenly beings]
shouted for joy?
31 Canst thou bind the
sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? 32 Canst thou bring
forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof
in the earth?
NRSV - 4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
31 "Can you bind
the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion? 32 Can you lead forth
the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule
on the earth?
TEV - "The LORD Answers Job" - 4 Were you there when I made the world? If you know so much, tell me about it. 5 Who decided how large it would be? Who stretched the measuring line over it? Do you know all the answers? 6 What holds up the pillars that support the earth? Who laid the cornerstone of the world? 7 In the dawn of that day the stars sang together, and the heavenly beings shouted for joy.
31 Can you tie the Pleiades together or loosen the bonds that hold Orion? 32 Can you guide the stars season by season and direct the Big and the Little Dipper? 33 Do you know the laws that govern the skies, and can you make them apply to the earth?
B3 - Psa 8 |
KJV - 1 O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
3 When I consider thy heavens,
the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest
him? 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned
him with glory and honour.
NRSV - 1 O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
3 When I look at your
heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
4 what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care
for them? 5 Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them
with glory and honor.
TEV - "God's Glory and Man's Dignity" - 1 O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world! Your praise reaches up to the heavens; 2 it is sung by children and babies. You are safe and secure from all your enemies; you stop anyone who opposes you. 3 When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places -- 4 what is man, that you think of him; mere man, that you care for him? 5 Yet you made him inferior only to yourself; you crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You appointed him ruler over everything you made; you placed him over all creation: 7 sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too; 8 the birds and the fish and the creatures in the seas.
B4 - Psa 33 |
KJV - 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
NRSV - 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
TEV - "A Song of Praise" - 8 Worship the LORD, all the earth! Honor him, all peoples of the world! 9 When he spoke, the world was created; at his command everything appeared. 10 The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. 11 But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD; happy are the people he has chosen for his own!

B5 - Job 39 |
KJV - 1 Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?
19 Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
21 He paweth in the valley,
and rejoiceth in his strength:...
NRSV - 1 "Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the deer?
19 "Do you give the horse its might? Do you clothe its neck with mane?
21 It paws violently,
exults mightily; it goes out to meet the weapons.
TEV - "The LORD Answers Job" - 1 Do you know when mountain goats are born? Have you watched wild deer give birth? 2 Do you know how long they carry their young? Do you know the time for their birth? 3 Do you know when they will crouch down and bring their young into the world? 4 In the wilds their young grow strong; they go away and don't come back.
19 Was it you, Job,
who made horses so strong and gave them their flowing manes? 20 Did you
make them leap like locusts and frighten men with their snorting? 21 They
eagerly paw the ground in the valley; they rush into battle with all their strength.
22 They do not know the meaning of fear, and no sword can turn them back. 23
The weapons which their riders carry rattle and flash in the sun. 24 Trembling
with excitement, the horses race ahead; when the trumpet blows, they can't stand
still. 25 At each blast of the trumpet they snort; they can smell a battle before
they get near, and they hear the officers shouting commands.
B6 - Job 42 |
KJV - 1 Then Job answered the Lord, and said, 2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
NRSV - 1 Then Job answered the LORD: 2 "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
TEV - "Job" - 1 Then Job answered the LORD. 2 I know, LORD, that you are all-powerful; that you can do everything you want. 3 You ask how I dare question your wisdom when I am so very ignorant. I talked about things I did not understand, about marvels too great for me to know. 4 You told me to listen while you spoke and to try to answer your questions. 5 In the past I knew only what others had told me, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. 6 So I am ashamed of all I have said and repent in dust and ashes.
B7 - Psa 36 |
KJV - 5 Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. 6 Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.
NRSV - 5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O LORD.
TEV - "The Goodness of God" - 5 LORD, your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is towering like the mountains; your justice is like the depths of the sea. Men and animals are in your care.
B8 - Psa 91 |
KJV - 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
10 There shall no evil
befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
NRSV - 2 will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."
5 You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, 6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
10 no evil shall befall
you, no scourge come near your tent.
TEV - "God Our Protector" - 1 Whoever goes to the LORD for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, 2 can say to him, "You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust." 3 He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers and from all deadly diseases. 4 He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you. 5 You need not fear any dangers at night or sudden attacks during the day 6 or the plagues that strike in the dark or the evils that kill in daylight.
9 You have made the LORD
your defender, the Most High your protector, 10 and so no disaster
will strike you, no violence will come near your home. 11 God will put his
angels in charge of you to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you
up with their hands to keep you from hurting your feet on the stones. 13 You
will trample down lions and snakes, fierce lions and poisonous snakes.
B9 - Psa 50 |
KJV - 1 The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
10 For every beast of the
forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11 I know all the fowls
of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
NRSV - 1 The mighty one, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
10 For every wild animal
of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds
of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine.
TEV - "True Worship" - 1 The Almighty God, the LORD, speaks; he calls to the whole earth from east to west. 2 God shines from Zion, the city perfect in its beauty.
7 "Listen, my people,
and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel. I am God, your God. 8
I do not reprimand you because of your sacrifices and the burnt offerings you
always bring me. 9 And yet I do not need bulls from your farms or goats from
your flocks; 10 all the animals in the forest are mine and the cattle on
thousands of hills. 11 All the wild birds are mine and all living things in
the fields.

B10 - 1Ki 17 |
KJV - 1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. 2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. 5 So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
NRSV - 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word." 2 The word of the LORD came to him, saying, 3 "Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the wadi, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." 5 So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the wadi.
TEV - "Elijah and the Drought" - 1 A prophet named Elijah, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to King Ahab, "In the name of the LORD, the living God of Israel, whom I serve, I tell you that there will be no dew or rain for the next two or three years until I say so." 2 Then the LORD said to Elijah, 3 "Leave this place and go east and hide yourself near Cherith Brook, east of the Jordan. 4 The brook will supply you with water to drink, and I have commanded ravens to bring you food there." 5 Elijah obeyed the LORD's command, and went and stayed by Cherith Brook. 6 He drank water from the brook, and ravens brought him bread and meat every morning and every evening. 7 After a while the brook dried up because of the lack of rain.
B11 - Job 12 |
KJV - 7 ...ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
9 Who knoweth not in all
these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this? 10 In whose hand is the soul
of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
NRSV - 7 "But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
9 Who among all these
does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? 10 In his hand is the
life of every living thing and the breath of every human being.
TEV - "The First Dialogue" - 7 Even birds and animals have much they could teach you; 8 ask the creatures of earth and sea for their wisdom. 9 All of them know that the LORD's hand made them. 10 It is God who directs the lives of his creatures; every man's life is in his power. 11 But just as your tongue enjoys tasting food, your ears enjoy hearing words.

B12 - 1Ki 17 |
KJV - 7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. 8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, 9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. 12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.
NRSV - 7 But after a while the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 9 "Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you." 10 So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." 11 As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." 12 But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." 13 Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth." 15 She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.
"Elijah and the
Widow in Zarephath" - 8 Then the LORD said to Elijah, 9 "Now
go to the town of Zarephath, near Sidon, and stay there. I have commanded a
widow who lives there to feed you." 10 So Elijah went to Zarephath, and
as he came to the town gate, he saw a widow gathering firewood. "Please
bring me a drink of water," he said to her. 11 And as she was going to
get it, he called out, "And please bring me some bread, too." 12 She
answered, "By the living LORD your God I swear that I don't have any bread.
All I have is a handful of flour in a bowl and a bit of olive oil in a jar.
I came here to gather some firewood to take back home and prepare what little
I have for my son and me. That will be our last meal, and then we will starve
to death." 13 "Don't worry," Elijah said to her. "Go on
and prepare your meal. But first make a small loaf from what you have and bring
it to me, and then prepare the rest for you and your son. 14 For this is what
the LORD, the God of Israel, says: "The bowl will not run out of flour
or the jar run out of oil before the day that I, the LORD, send rain."
15 The widow went and did as Elijah had told her, and all of them had enough
food for many days. 16 As the LORD had promised through Elijah, the bowl did
not run out of flour nor did the jar run out of oil.

B13 - Job 33 |
KJV - 4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
NRSV - 4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
TEV - "The Speeches of Elihu" - 1 And now, Job, listen carefully to all that I have to say. 2 I am ready to say what's on my mind. 3 All my words are sincere, and I am speaking the truth. 4 God's spirit made me and gave me life. 5 Answer me if you can. Prepare your arguments. 6 You and I are the same in God's sight, both of us were formed from clay. 7 So you have no reason to fear me; I will not overpower you.
B14 - Mat 4 |
KJV - 23 And Jesus went about [in] all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
NRSV - 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
TEV - "Jesus Teaches, Preaches, and Heals" - 23 Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people who had all kinds of disease and sickness. 24 The news about him spread through the whole country of Syria, so that people brought to him all those who were sick, suffering from all kinds of diseases and disorders: people with demons, and epileptics, and paralytics -- and Jesus healed them all. 25 Large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Ten Towns, from Jerusalem, Judea, and the land on the other side of the Jordan.
B15 - Mat 5 |
KJV - 1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
NRSV - 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
TEV - "The Sermon on the Mount" - 1 Jesus saw the crowds and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them:
B16 - Mat 6 |
KJV - 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
NRSV - 24 "No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
TEV - "God and Possessions" - 24 "No one can be a slave of two masters; he will hate one and love the other; he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25 "This is why I tell you: do not be worried about the food and drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your body. After all, isn't life worth more than food? And isn't the body worth more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren't you worth much more than birds? 27 Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?
B17 - Mat 7 |
KJV - 16 ...Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
28 And it came to pass,
when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the
[their] scribes.
NRSV - 16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
28 Now when Jesus had
finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, 29
for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
TEV - "A Tree and Its Fruit" - 15 "Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you looking like sheep on the outside, but on the inside they are really like wild wolves. 16 You will know them by what they do. Thorn bushes do not bear grapes, and briers do not bear figs. 17 A healthy tree bears good fruit, but a poor tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a poor tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 And any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire. 20 So then, you will know the false prophets by what they do.
"The Authority of Jesus" - 28 When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowd was amazed at the way he taught. 29 He wasn't like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority.

NRSV - 1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, at three o'clock in the afternoon. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate so that he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for alms. 4 Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, "Look at us." 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, "I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk." 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 Jumping up, he stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 All the people saw him walking and praising God,
TEV - "A Lame Man Is Healed" - 1 One day Peter and John went to the Temple at three o'clock in the afternoon, the hour for prayer. 2 There at the Beautiful Gate, as it was called, was a man who had been lame all his life. Every day he was carried to the gate to beg for money from the people who were going into the Temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John going in, he begged them to give him something. 4 They looked straight at him, and Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So he looked at them, expecting to get something from them. 6 But Peter said to him, "I have no money at all, but I give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I order you to get up and walk!" 7 Then he took him by his right hand and helped him up. At once the man's feet and ankles became strong; 8 he jumped up, stood on his feet, and started walking around. Then he went into the Temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. 9 The people there saw him walking and praising God, 10 and when they recognized him as the beggar who had sat at the Beautiful Gate, they were all surprised and amazed at what had happened to him.

We thank you that you have taken your great power and have begun to rule!
