"Mrs. [Mary Baker] Eddy once said to a student that she longed for the day to come when no one could enter a Christian Science church, no matter how sick or how sorrowing that one might be, without being healed, and that this day can come only when every member of the church studies and demonstrates the truth contained in the Lesson-Sermon, and takes with him to the service the consciousness thus prepared." KJV texts | King
James Version (KJV) -- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision
of the KJV. Today's editions of the KJV are based upon Dr.
Blayney's revision, which like many of its KJV-revision predecessors,
does not include the Apocrypha and the marginal notes that were
in the original 1611 KJV. Spelling and punctuation also are quite
different from the 1611 edition. Even in today's editions of the KJV,
there remain some punctuation and spelling differences among major publishers.

KJV - 5 ...the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
10 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
25 To whom then will ye
liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high,
and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number:
he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong
in power; not one faileth.
NRSV - 5 ...the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
10 See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in;
25 To whom then will
you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes
on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers
them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power,
not one is missing.
TEV - "Words of Hope" - 3 A voice cries out, "Prepare in the wilderness a road for the LORD! Clear the way in the desert for our God! 4 Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. 5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind will see it. The LORD himself has promised this."
10 The Sovereign LORD is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. 11 He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers.
"Israel's Incomparable God" - 12 Can anyone measure the ocean by handfuls or measure the sky with his hands? Can anyone hold the soil of the earth in a cup or weigh the mountains and hills on scales? 13 Can anyone tell the LORD what to do? Who can teach him or give him advice? 14 With whom does God consult in order to know and understand and to learn how things should be done?
21 Do you not know? Were
you not told long ago? Have you not heard how the world began? 22 It was
made by the one who sits on his throne above the earth and beyond the sky; the
people below look as tiny as ants. He stretched out the sky like a curtain,
like a tent in which to live. 23 He brings down powerful rulers and reduces
them to nothing. 24 They are like young plants, just set out and barely rooted.
When the LORD sends a wind, they dry up and blow away like straw. 25 To whom
can the holy God be compared? Is there anyone else like him? 26 Look up at the
sky! Who created the stars you see? The one who leads them out like an army,
he knows how many there are and calls each one by name! His power is so great
-- not one of them is ever missing!

NRSV - 24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who by myself spread out the earth;
TEV - "The LORD, the Creator and Savior" - 24 "I am the LORD, your savior; I am the one who created you. I am the LORD, the Creator of all things. I alone stretched out the heavens; when I made the earth, no one helped me. 25 I make fools of fortunetellers and frustrate the predictions of astrologers. KJV - 24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
30 Thou sendest forth thy
spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. 31 The glory
of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.
NRSV - 24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
30 When you send forth
your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. 31 May
the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works --
TEV - "In Praise of the Creator" - 24 LORD, you have made so many things! How wisely you made them all! The earth is filled with your creatures. 25 There is the ocean, large and wide, where countless creatures live, large and small alike. 26 The ships sail on it, and in it plays Leviathan, that sea monster which you made.
27 All of them depend on
you to give them food when they need it. 28 You give it to them, and they eat
it; you provide food, and they are satisfied. 29 When you turn away, they are
afraid; when you take away your breath, they die and go back to the dust from
which they came. 30 But when you give them breath, they are created; you
give new life to the earth. 31 May the glory of the LORD last forever! May the
LORD be happy with what he has made! 32 He looks at the earth, and it trembles;
he touches the mountains, and they pour out smoke. 33 I will sing to the LORD
all my life; as long as I live I will sing praises to my God. 34 May he be pleased
with my song, for my gladness comes from him. 35 May sinners be destroyed from
the earth; may the wicked be no more. Praise the LORD, my soul! Praise the LORD!

KJV - 21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: 24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.
33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
36 And it came to pass
at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet
came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known
this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I
have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this
people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their
heart back again. 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt
sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water
that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their
faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.
NRSV - 21 Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." The people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets number four hundred fifty. 23 Let two bulls be given to us; let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the LORD; the god who answers by fire is indeed God." All the people answered, "Well spoken!"
26 So they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, crying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no answer. They limped about the altar that they had made.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come closer to me"; and all the people came closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down;
33 Next he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood."
36 At the time of the
offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said, "O LORD,
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God
in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at
your bidding. 37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so that this people may know
that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back."
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood,
the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, "The
LORD indeed is God; the LORD indeed is God."
TEV - "Elijah and the Prophets of Baal" - 20 So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal to meet at Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went up to the people and said, "How much longer will it take you to make up your minds? If the LORD is God, worship him; but if Baal is God, worship him!" But the people didn't say a word. 22 Then Elijah said, "I am the only prophet of the LORD still left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal. 23 Bring two bulls; let the prophets of Baal take one, kill it, cut it in pieces, and put it on the wood -- but don't light the fire. I will do the same with the other bull. 24 Then let the prophets of Baal pray to their god, and I will pray to the LORD, and the one who answers by sending fire -- he is God." The people shouted their approval. 25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Since there are so many of you, you take a bull and prepare it first. Pray to your god, but don't set fire to the wood." 26 They took the bull that was brought to them, prepared it, and prayed to Baal until noon. They shouted, "Answer us, Baal!" and kept dancing around the altar they had built. But no answer came.
30 Then Elijah said to the people, "Come closer to me," and they all gathered around him. He set about repairing the altar of the LORD which had been torn down. 31 He took twelve stones, one for each of the twelve tribes named for the sons of Jacob, the man to whom the LORD had given the name Israel. 32 With these stones he rebuilt the altar for the worship of the LORD. He dug a trench around it, large enough to hold about four gallons of water. 33 Then he placed the wood on the altar, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the offering and the wood." They did so, 34 and he said, "Do it again" -- and they did. "Do it once more," he said -- and they did. 35 The water ran down around the altar and filled the trench. 36 At the hour of the afternoon sacrifice the prophet Elijah approached the altar and prayed, "O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove now that you are the God of Israel and that I am your servant and have done all this at your command. 37 Answer me, LORD, answer me, so that this people will know that you, the LORD, are God and that you are bringing them back to yourself." 38 The LORD sent fire down, and it burned up the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones, scorched the earth and dried up the water in the trench. 39 When the people saw this, they threw themselves on the ground and exclaimed, "The LORD is God; the LORD alone is God!" 40 Elijah ordered, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any of them get away!" The people seized them all, and Elijah led them down to Kishon Brook and killed them.

KJV - 9 ...call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
NRSV - 9 ...call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father -- the one in heaven.
TEV - "Jesus Warns against the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees" - 6 They love the best places at feasts and the reserved seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to have people call them "Teacher.' 8 You must not be called "Teacher,' because you are all brothers of one another and have only one Teacher. 9 And you must not call anyone here on earth "Father,' because you have only the one Father in heaven. 10 Nor should you be called "Leader,' because your one and only leader is the Messiah. 11 The greatest one among you must be your servant. 12 Whoever makes himself great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be made great.
Sherman E. Johnson, in his commentary on Matthew for The Interpreter's Bible, Volume 7 (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1951, pages 530-532) comments:
8-10. These are words of a Christian prophet or teacher. The title rabbi, by which Jesus was sometimes addressed, is reserved for that teacher (i.e., Christ) alone. Though there must be teachers in the church (16:19; 18:18), you are all brethren and there can be no external distinction of rank. Elisha addressed Elijah as father (II Kings 2:12; cf. also II Kings 6:21). In N.T. times the term usually refered to the patriarchs (e.g., Rom. 9:5). It may also have been applied to distinguished scribes of the past, for one tractate of the Mishnah is called Aboth ("The Father"). This would have been very natural. The word "abbot" is derived from the Aramaic 'abba, "father," and in the last century it has become customary in English-speaking lands to address not only monks but all priests as "father." Matthew deplores all insignia of rank; only God is Father and only Christ is master, i.e., "teacher" or "professor." If one takes this command literally, the titles "doctor" and "professor," as well as "rabbi" and "father," are forgbidden to Christians in addressing their leaders.
Barklay M. Newman and Philip C. Stine, in A Handbook on The Gospel of Matthew (NY: United Bible Societies, 1988, page 707) write:
And call no man your father is not a prohibition against using the noun of address of one's biological father; rather the injunction is against using it as an honorific in addressing someone of superior rank. See the NJB footnote, which points out that in this context father is "another title of honour." One may then translate "Do not give anyone on earth the honorary title of 'Father.' The only one worthy of this title is your Father in heaven."

forth? 11 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me
of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command
ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands,
have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. 13 I have
raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways:...
NRSV - 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god...
10 Woe to anyone who
says to a father, "What are you begetting?" or to a woman, "With
what are you in labor?" 11 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel,
and its Maker: Will you question me about my children, or command me concerning
the work of my hands? 12 I made the earth, and created humankind upon it; it
was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.
13 I have aroused Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his paths straight;...
TEV - "The LORD Appoints Cyrus" - 5 "I am the LORD; there is no other god. I will give you the strength you need, although you do not know me. 6 I do this so that everyone from one end of the world to the other may know that I am the LORD and that there is no other god. 7 I create both light and darkness; I bring both blessing and disaster. I, the LORD, do all these things. 8 I will send victory from the sky like rain; the earth will open to receive it and will blossom with freedom and justice. I, the LORD, will make this happen."
"The LORD of Creation
and History" - 9 Does a clay pot dare argue with its maker, a pot that
is like all the others? Does the clay ask the potter what he is doing? Does
the pot complain that its maker has no skill? 10 Does anyone dare say to
his parents, "Why did you make me like this?" 11 The LORD, the holy
God of Israel, the one who shapes the future, says: "You have no right
to question me about my children or to tell me what I ought to do! 12 I am the
one who made the earth and created mankind to live there. By my power I stretched
out the heavens; I control the sun, the moon, and the stars. 13 I myself have
stirred Cyrus to action to fulfill my purpose and put things right. I will straighten
out every road that he travels. He will rebuild my city, Jerusalem, and
set my captive people free. No one has hired him or bribed him to do this."
The LORD Almighty has spoken.

KJV - 14 Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
NRSV - 14 ...he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.
TEV - "Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men" - 13 When Jesus heard the news about John, he left there in a boat and went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard about it, and so they left their towns and followed him by land. 14 Jesus got out of the boat, and when he saw the large crowd, his heart was filled with pity for them, and he healed their sick. 15 That evening his disciples came to him and said, "It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away and let them go to the villages to buy food for themselves." 16 "They don't have to leave," answered Jesus. "You yourselves give them something to eat!" 17 "All we have here are five loaves and two fish," they replied.

KJV - 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
NRSV - 2 And just then some people were carrying a paralyzed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." 3 Then some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 4 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, "Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, "Stand up and walk'? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" -- he then said to the paralytic -- "Stand up, take your bed and go to your home." 7 And he stood up and went to his home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings.
TEV - "Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man" - 1 Jesus got into the boat and went back across the lake to his own town, 2 where some people brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the paralyzed man, "Courage, my son! Your sins are forgiven." 3 Then some teachers of the Law said to themselves, "This man is speaking blasphemy!" 4 Jesus perceived what they were thinking, and so he said, "Why are you thinking such evil things? 5 Is it easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, "Get up and walk'? 6 I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man, "Get up, pick up your bed, and go home!" 7 The man got up and went home. 8 When the people saw it, they were afraid, and praised God for giving such authority to men.

KJV - 44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
49 For I have not spoken
of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should
say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting:
whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
NRSV - 44 Then Jesus cried aloud: "Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me.
49 for I have not spoken
on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about
what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal
life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me."
TEV - "Judgment by Jesus' Words" - 44 Jesus said in a loud voice, "Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in him who sent me. 45 Whoever sees me sees also him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. 47 If anyone hears my message and does not obey it, I will not judge him. I came, not to judge the world, but to save it. 48 Whoever rejects me and does not accept my message has one who will judge him. The words I have spoken will be his judge on the last day! 49 This is true, because I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has commanded me what I must say and speak. 50 And I know that his command brings eternal life. What I say, then, is what the Father has told me to say."

KJV - 30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
NRSV - 30 "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
TEV - "Witnesses to Jesus" - 30 "I can do nothing on my own authority; I judge only as God tells me, so my judgment is right, because I am not trying to do what I want, but only what he who sent me wants. 31 "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say is not to be accepted as real proof. 32 But there is someone else who testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. 33 John is the one to whom you sent your messengers, and he spoke on behalf of the truth. 34 It is not that I must have a man's witness; I say this only in order that you may be saved. 35 John was like a lamp, burning and shining, and you were willing for a while to enjoy his light.

KJV - 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
12 Wherefore, my beloved,
as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my
absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God
which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
NRSV - 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
TEV - "Christ's Humility and Greatness" - 1 Your life in Christ makes you strong, and his love comforts you. You have fellowship with the Spirit, and you have kindness and compassion for one another. 2 I urge you, then, to make me completely happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and being one in soul and mind. 3 Don't do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves. 4 And look out for one another's interests, not just for your own. 5 The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had:
"Shining as Lights
in the World" - 12 So then, dear friends, as you always obeyed me
when I was with you, it is even more important that you obey me now while I
am away from you. Keep on working with fear and trembling to complete your salvation,
13 because God is always at work in you to make you willing and able to obey
his own purpose. 14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so
that you may be innocent and pure as God's perfect children, who live in a world
of corrupt and sinful people. You must shine among them like stars lighting
up the sky, 16 as you offer them the message of life. If you do so, I shall
have reason to be proud of you on the Day of Christ, because it will show that
all my effort and work have not been wasted.
