KJV texts | King James Version (KJV)
-- Dr. Benjamin Blayney's 1769 revision of the KJV. Today's editions
of the KJV are based upon Dr. Blayney's revision, which like many
of its KJV-revision predecessors, does not include the Apocrypha
and the marginal notes that were in the original 1611 KJV. Spelling
and punctuation also are quite different from the 1611 edition. Even in
today's editions of the KJV, there remain some punctuation and spelling
differences among major publishers. |

KJV - 13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.
NRSV - 13 Be silent, all people, before the LORD; for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.
TEV - "The Exiles Are Called to Come Home" - 11 At that time many nations will come to the LORD and become his people. He will live among you, and you will know that he has sent me to you. 12 Once again Judah will be the special possession of the LORD in his sacred land, and Jerusalem will be the city he loves most of all. 13 Be silent, everyone, in the presence of the LORD, for he is coming from his holy dwelling place.

KJV - 1 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. 5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. 6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
10 But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king:…
NRSV - 1 Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Do not learn the way of the nations, or be dismayed at the signs of the heavens; for the nations are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are false: a tree from the forest is cut down, and worked with an ax by the hands of an artisan; 4 people deck it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. 5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor is it in them to do good. 6 There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might.
8 They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction given by idols is no better than wood!
10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King...
TEV - "Idolatry and True Worship" - 1 People of Israel, listen to the message that the LORD has for you. 2 He says, "Do not follow the ways of other nations; do not be disturbed by unusual sights in the sky, even though other nations are terrified. 3 The religion of these people is worthless. A tree is cut down in the forest; it is carved by the tools of the woodworker 4 and decorated with silver and gold. It is fastened down with nails to keep it from falling over. 5 Such idols are like scarecrows in a field of melons; they cannot speak; they have to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them: they can cause you no harm, and they can do you no good." 6 LORD, there is no one like you; you are mighty, and your name is great and powerful. 7 Who would not honor you, the king of all nations? You deserve to be honored. There is no one like you among all the wise men of the nations or among any of their kings. 8 All of them are stupid and foolish. What can they learn from wooden idols? 9 Their idols are covered with silver from Spain and with gold from Uphaz, all the work of artists; they are dressed in violet and purple cloth woven by skilled weavers. 10 But you, LORD, are the true God, you are the living God and the eternal king. When you are angry, the world trembles; the nations cannot endure your anger.

NRSV - 7 Where can I go from your spirit? KJV - 5 For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.
15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. 16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; 17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. 18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.
NRSV - 5 For I know that the LORD is great; our Lord is above all gods.
15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 16 They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; 17 they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them and all who trust them shall become like them.
TEV - "A Hymn of Praise" - 5 I know that our LORD is great, greater than all the gods. 6 He does whatever he wishes in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in the depths below. 7 He brings storm clouds from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning for the storms, and he brings out the wind from his storeroom.
15 The gods of the nations are made of silver and gold; they are formed by human hands. 16 They have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see. 17 They have ears, but cannot hear; they are not even able to breathe. 18 May all who made them and who trust in them become like the idols they have made!

KJV - 12 …where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
NRSV - 12 "...where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
14 The deep says, "It is not in me,' and the sea says, "It is not with me.'
20 "Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?
23 "God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.
TEV - "In Praise of Wisdom" - 9 Men dig the hardest rocks, Dig mountains away at their base. 10 As they tunnel through the rocks, They discover precious stones. 11 They dig to the sources of rivers And bring to light what is hidden. 12 But where can wisdom be found? Where can we learn to understand? 13 Wisdom is not to be found among men; No one knows its true value. 14 The depths of the oceans and seas Say that wisdom is not found there. 15 It cannot be bought with silver or gold. 16 The finest gold and jewels Cannot equal its value. 17 It is worth more than gold, Than a gold vase or finest glass. 18 The value of wisdom is more Than coral or crystal or rubies. 19 The finest topaz and the purest gold Cannot compare with the value of wisdom. 20 Where, then, is the source of wisdom? Where can we learn to understand? 21 No living creature can see it, Not even a bird in flight. 22 Even death and destruction Admit they have heard only rumors. 23 God alone knows the way, Knows the place where wisdom is found, 24 Because he sees the ends of the earth, Sees everything under the sky. 25 When God gave the wind its power And determined the size of the sea; 26 When God decided where the rain would fall, And the path that the thunderclouds travel; 27 It was then he saw wisdom and tested its worth -- He gave it his approval. 28 God said to men, "To be wise, you must have reverence for the Lord. To understand, you must turn from evil."

NRSV - 23 Thus says the LORD: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth; 24 but let those who boast boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the LORD; I act with steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the LORD.
TEV - "The People of Jerusalem Cry Out for Help" - 23 The LORD says, "Wise men should not boast of their wisdom, nor strong men of their strength, nor rich men of their wealth. 24 If anyone wants to boast, he should boast that he knows and understands me, because my love is constant, and I do what is just and right. These are the things that please me. I, the LORD, have spoken."

KJV - 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
NRSV - 5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.
17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
TEV - "Faith and Wisdom" - 2 My brothers, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way, 3 for you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, the result is the ability to endure. 4 Make sure that your endurance carries you all the way without failing, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should pray to God, who will give it to him; because God gives generously and graciously to all. 6 But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt at all. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is driven and blown about by the wind. 7...8 A person like that, unable to make up his mind and undecided in all he does, must not think that he will receive anything from the Lord.
"Testing and Tempting" - 16 Do not be deceived, my dear brothers! 17 Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning. 18 By his own will he brought us into being through the word of truth, so that we should have first place among all his creatures.

TEV - "Confidence in the Law of the LORD" - 49 Remember your promise to me, your servant; it has given me hope. 50 Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life. 51 The proud are always scornful of me, but I have not departed from your law. 52 I remember your judgments of long ago, and they bring me comfort, O LORD. 53 When I see the wicked breaking your law, I am filled with anger. 54 During my brief earthly life I compose songs about your commands. 55 In the night I remember you, LORD, and I think about your law. 56 I find my happiness in obeying your commands.
"Faith in the Law of the LORD" - 89 Your word, O LORD, will last forever; it is eternal in heaven. 90 Your faithfulness endures through all the ages; you have set the earth in place, and it remains. 91 All things remain to this day because of your command, because they are all your servants. 92 If your law had not been the source of my joy, I would have died from my sufferings. 93 I will never neglect your instructions, because by them you have kept me alive. 94 I am yours -- save me! I have tried to obey your commands. 95 Wicked men are waiting to kill me, but I will meditate on your laws.
"Safety in the Law of the LORD" - 113 I hate those who are not completely loyal to you, but I love your law. 114 You are my defender and protector; I put my hope in your promise. 115 Go away from me, you sinful people. I will obey the commands of my God. 116 Give me strength, as you promised, and I shall live; don't let me be disappointed in my hope! 117 Hold me, and I will be safe, and I will always pay attention to your commands. 118 You reject everyone who disobeys your laws; their deceitful schemes are useless. 119 You treat all the wicked like rubbish, and so I love your instructions.
"A Prayer for Deliverance" - 145 With all my heart I call to you; answer me, LORD, and I will obey your commands! 146 I call to you; save me, and I will keep your laws. 147 Before sunrise I call to you for help; I place my hope in your promise. 148 All night long I lie awake, to meditate on your instructions. 149 Because your love is constant, hear me, O LORD; show your mercy, and preserve my life! 150 My cruel persecutors are coming closer, people who never keep your law. 151 But you are near to me, LORD, and all your commands are permanent.

NRSV - 8 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. 10 For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit. 11 You show me the path of life. KJV - 22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get
into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the
multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up
into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there
alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea
[now was away from the land a great distance], tossed with waves: for
the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went
unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking
on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried
out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good
cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord,
if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come.
And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to
go [and went] to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the [strong]
wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying,
Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught
him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come [climbed] into the ship,
the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped
him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
NRSV - 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." 28 Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
TEV - "Jesus Walks on the Water" - 22 Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people away. 23 After sending the people away, he went up a hill by himself to pray. When evening came, Jesus was there alone; 24 and by this time the boat was far out in the lake, tossed about by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it. 25 Between three and six o'clock in the morning Jesus came to the disciples, walking on the water. 26 When they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and screamed with fear. 27 Jesus spoke to them at once. "Courage!" he said. "It is I. Don't be afraid!" 28 Then Peter spoke up. "Lord, if it is really you, order me to come out on the water to you." 29 "Come!" answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. "Save me, Lord!" he cried. 31 At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, "What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?" 32 They both got into the boat, and the wind died down. 33 Then the disciples in the boat worshiped Jesus. "Truly you are the Son of God!" they exclaimed.

KJV - 6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. 9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? 10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
NRSV - 6 On another sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would cure on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. 8 Even though he knew what they were thinking, he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and stand here." He got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?" 10 After looking around at all of them, he said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was restored.
TEV - "The Man with a Paralyzed Hand" - 6 On another Sabbath Jesus went into a synagogue and taught. A man was there whose right hand was paralyzed. 7 Some teachers of the Law and some Pharisees wanted a reason to accuse Jesus of doing wrong, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man, "Stand up and come here to the front." The man got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you: What does our Law allow us to do on the Sabbath? To help or to harm? To save a man's life or destroy it?" 10 He looked around at them all; then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand became well again.

understanding [with an insightful
psalm]. 8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the
throne of his holiness.

TEV - "The Supreme Ruler" - 5 God goes up to his throne. There are shouts of joy and the blast of trumpets, as the LORD goes up. 6 Sing praise to God; sing praise to our king! 7 God is king over all the world; praise him with songs! 8 God sits on his sacred throne; he rules over the nations. 9 The rulers of the nations assemble with the people of the God of Abraham. More powerful than all armies is he; he rules supreme.
maskil. The Hiphil participle used as a noun appears in the titles of Pss 32, 42, 44, 45, 52-55, 74, 78, 88, 89, 142. In addition, Ps 47:7 [H 8] emphasizes that one is to sing praises in accordance with a maskil psalm. Some have considered a maskil to be a didactic poem which causes consideration or gives insight. Others have suggested it to be an artistic song having insight. More probably this can be considered a contemplative poem, with elements of the other two... Except for its first occurence (Ps 32) maskil is always linked with an individual or the Sons of Korah. David is included in Ps 52-55 and 142, Asaph in 74 and 78 and Heman in 88 and 89. The root, skl, denotes "insight" or "wisdom," so these psalms may be noted for their special instruction or their musical difficulty.

KJV - 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us;…
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
NRSV - 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. 6 The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us;...

TEV - "God Is with Us" - 1 God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. 2 So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depths; 3 even if the seas roar and rage, and the hills are shaken by the violence. 4 There is a river that brings joy to the city of God, to the sacred house of the Most High. 5 God is in that city, and it will never be destroyed; at early dawn he will come to its aid. 6 Nations are terrified, kingdoms are shaken; God thunders, and the earth dissolves. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 Come and see what the LORD has done. See what amazing things he has done on earth. 9 He stops wars all over the world; he breaks bows, destroys spears, and sets shields on fire. 10 "Stop fighting," he says, "and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme over the world." 11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

KJV - 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord [our Lord
and God], to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created
all things, and for thy pleasure they are [existed]
and were created.
NRSV - 11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."
TEV - "Worship in Heaven" - 9 The four living creatures sing songs of glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns down in front of the throne and say, 11 "Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power.
