What is included in this Bible Lesson Online Study Aid and in the actual Bible lesson?
Bible Lesson Online Study Aid - The Bible Lesson Online Study Aid is not the Bible Lesson, but it does contain a variety of tools for exploring the Bible Lesson, including:
Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson - The Bible Lesson itself has three components:
All three components can be read or purchased at any Christian Science Reading Room and can be read online at http://www.spirituality.com/dt/studyguide.jhtml. A worldwide listing of Reading Rooms is available at http://168.203.8.11/Church.qry?function=form.
Special topical index on "Overcoming Terrorism and Revenge" - In light of the September 11 attacks on the US, the continuing threats in the US, and the military retaliation in Afghanistan, a special topical index has been developing to address the issues of terrorism, revenge, contagion, fear, and other related issues. New online web articles are frequently added. This index can be browsed at http://www.bibletexts.com/topics/overcomingviolence.htm. Below are a few of the many articles listed in the index.
<GT> Ecclesiastes 7 - [To use other Bible research tools to further explore this citation - click here]
KJV - 29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
NRSV - 29 See, this alone I found, that God made human beings [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] straightforward, but they have devised many schemes.
TEV - "Thoughts about Life" - 26 I found something more bitter than death -- the woman who is like a trap. The love she offers you will catch you like a net; and her arms round you will hold you like a chain. A man who pleases God can get away, but she will catch the sinner. 27 Yes, said the Philosopher, I found this out little by little while I was looking for answers. 28 I have looked for other answers but have found none. I found one man in a thousand that I could respect, but not one woman. 29 This is all that I have learnt: God made us [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated.
This famous passage in which Koheleth [the name of the author of Ecclesiates] expresses his distrust of women testifies to the attraction they hold over him... That this is only one aspect of Koheleth's attitude toward women is clear from his counsel urging, "behold life with the woman thou lovest" (9:9). The ideal remains before him, no matter how often the reality has brought him disappointment -- a clue to the idealistic source from which his cynicism flows... The two attitudes are, of course, very common in Wisdom literature... It is generally overlooked that Koheleth does not have too high a regard for the character of the male sex either, since he finds men only one-tenth of one percent better than the women! Having reached this result, he concludes by saying that the human race itself leaves much to be desired... This weakness Koheleth attributes not to God's implanting but to men's propensity to eschew the straight path in favor of machinations. That evil is not God's will, but man's doing, is the general standpoint of Judaism as a whole.
KJV - 18 The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time:…
23 The steps of a good man [Hebrew: ghehber, Strong's #1397] are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. 28 For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. 30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
34 Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land:…
37 Mark the perfect man [Hebrew: ghehber, Strong's #1397], and behold the upright: for the end of that man [Hebrew: ish, Strong's #376] is peace.
NRSV - 18 The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will abide forever; 19 they are not put to shame in evil times,...
23 Our steps are made firm by the LORD, when he delights in our way;
27 Depart from evil, and do good; so you shall abide forever. 28 For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his faithful ones. The righteous shall be kept safe forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever. 30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak justice. 31 The law of their God is in their hearts; their steps do not slip.
34 Wait for the LORD, and keep to his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land;...
37 Mark the blameless, and behold the upright, for there is posterity for the peaceable.
TEV - "The Destiny of the Wicked and of the Good" - 16 The little that a good man owns is worth more than the wealth of all the wicked, 17 because the LORD will take away the strength of the wicked, but protect those who are good. 18 The LORD takes care of those who obey him, and the land will be theirs forever. 19 They will not suffer when times are bad; they will have enough in time of famine. 20 But the wicked will die; the enemies of the LORD will vanish like wild flowers; they will disappear like smoke. 21 The wicked man borrows and never pays back, but the good man is generous with his gifts. 22 Those who are blessed by the LORD will possess the land, but those who are cursed by him will be driven out. 23 The LORD guides a man [Hebrew: ghehber, Strong's #1397] in the way he should go and protects those who please him. 24 If they fall, they will not stay down, because the LORD will help them up.
27 Turn away from evil and do good, and your descendants will always live in the land; 28 for the LORD loves what is right and does not abandon his faithful people. He protects them forever, but the descendants of the wicked will be driven out. 29 The righteous will possess the land and live in it forever. 30 A good man's words are wise, and he is always fair. 31 He keeps the law of his God in his heart and never departs from it. 32 A wicked man watches a good man and tries to kill him; 33 but the LORD will not abandon him to his enemy's power or let him be condemned when he is on trial. 34 Put your hope in the LORD and obey his commands; he will honor you by giving you the land, and you will see the wicked driven out. 35 I once knew a wicked man who was a tyrant; he towered over everyone like a cedar of Lebanon; 36 but later I passed by, and he wasn't there; I looked for him, but couldn't find him. 37 Notice the good man, observe the righteous man [Hebrew: ghehber, Strong's #1397]; a peaceful man [Hebrew: ish, Strong's #376] has descendants, 38 but sinners are completely destroyed, and their descendants are wiped out.
<B1> Psalms 148 - [To use other Bible research tools to further explore this citation - click here]
KJV - 1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. 4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created.
NRSV - 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights!
3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created.
TEV - "A Call for the Universe to Praise God" - 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from heaven, you that live in the heights above. 2 Praise him, all his angels, all his heavenly armies. 3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, shining stars. 4 Praise him, highest heavens, and the waters above the sky. 5 Let them all praise the name of the LORD! He commanded, and they were created; 6 by his command they were fixed in their places forever, and they cannot disobey. 7 Praise the LORD from the earth, sea monsters and all ocean depths; 8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, strong winds that obey his command.
KJV - 26 And God said, Let us make man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] in our image, after our likeness:..
27 So God created man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good…
NRSV - 26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] in our image, according to our likeness;...
27 So God created humankind [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."
31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good...
TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120]; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small." 27 So God created human beings [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, 28 blessed them, and said, "Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. 29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food" -- and it was done. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came -- that was the sixth day.
Then God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground." God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.
Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (edited by Brown, Driver, and Briggs, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1978, page 9)
1. a man... 2. coll. man, mankind... 3. Adam, first man... 4. city in Jordan valley...
Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, Volume 1 (edited by Botterweck and Ringgren, translated by John T. Willis, Grand Rapids, Michigan: Eerdmans, 1977, page 75-87)
'adham, meaning "man" or the proper name "Adam"... usually appears in prose texts with the article, and in poetic texts without the article. Predominantly, this word occurs as a collective singluar designating a class (as "man" in English), and therefore can be translated by "mankind" or as a plural "men." At the same time, it is often used of individuals... and functions adjectivally ("human") or indefinitely ("someone"), but never appears in the plural or in the construct... {page 75}
The use of the word 'adham in the OT presents one of the strongest evidences for ancient Israelite universalism. In most passages using 'adham, including the earliest texts, it is clear that this word is not intended to refer particularly to Israelites, but to all men... {pages 83-84}
A Theological Word Book of the Bible (edited by Alan Richardson, New York: Macmillan, 1950, page 15)
Adam. The word means originally a human being (cf. Gen. 2.5) or mankind collectively (Gen.1.26). Only for the purposes of the myth [the Adam and Eve story] does it become a proper name. (The precise etymology of the word is doubtful.) Thus we may claim biblical sanction for the statement that Adam is Everyman. The myth was, of course, taken literally for centuries; it was traditionally held that Adam was the first human being...
KJV - 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] became a living soul.
NRSV - 6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground -- 7 then the LORD God formed man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] became a living being.
TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 4b When the LORD God made the universe, 5 there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 6 but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground. 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.
KJV - 22 Cease ye from man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
NRSV - 22 Turn away from mortals [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], who have only breath in their nostrils, for of what account are they?
TEV - "Arrogance Will Be Destroyed" - 19 People will hide in caves in the rocky hills or dig holes in the ground to try to escape from the LORD's anger and to hide from his power and glory, when he comes to shake the earth. 20 When that day comes, they will throw away the gold and silver idols they have made, and abandon them to the moles and the bats. 21 When the LORD comes to shake the earth, people will hide in holes and caves in the rocky hills to try to escape from his anger and to hide from his power and glory. 22 Put no more confidence in mortal men [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120]. What are they worth?

KJV - 8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
15 And the Lord God took the man[Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] , and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
NRSV - 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
15 The LORD God took the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."
TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 7 Then the LORD God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] he had formed. 9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.
15 Then the LORD God placed the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. 16 He told him [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], "You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 17 except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day."
KJV - 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
NRSV - 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
TEV - "A Tree and Its Fruit" - 15 "Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you looking like sheep on the outside, but on the inside they are really like wild wolves. 16 You will know them by what they do. Thorn bushes do not bear grapes, and briers do not bear figs. 17 A healthy tree bears good fruit, but a poor tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a poor tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 And any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire. 20 So then, you will know the false prophets by what they do.

KJV - 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120].
NRSV - 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120].
TEV - "The Garden of Eden" - 21 Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120]. 23 Then the man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind -- Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. "Woman' is her name because she was taken out of man." 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.
KJV - 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
NRSV - 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, "You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 but God said, "You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die."' 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; 5 for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.
TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 1 Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the LORD God had made. The snake asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?" 2 "We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden," the woman answered, 3 "except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die." 4 The snake replied, "That's not true; you will not die. 5 God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God and know what is good and what is bad." 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 7 As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. 8 That evening they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, and they hid from him among the trees. 9 But the LORD God called out to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." 11 "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?"
KJV - 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
NRSV - 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
TEV - "God's Wisdom" - 9 However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only a person's own spirit within him that knows all about him; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us.

KJV - 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children;…
NRSV - 9 But the LORD God called to the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] , and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent tricked me, and I ate."
16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pangs in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children,..."
TEV - "The Disobedience of Man" - 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. 9 But the LORD God called out to the man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120], "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." 11 "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?" 12 The man [Hebrew: adam, Strong's #0120] answered, "The woman you put here with me gave me the fruit, and I ate it." 13 The LORD God asked the woman, "Why did you do this?" She replied, "The snake tricked me into eating it."
"God Pronounces Judgment" - 14 Then the LORD God said to the snake, "You will be punished for this; you alone of all the animals must bear this curse: From now on you will crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust as long as you live. 15 I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite their heel." 16 And he said to the woman, "I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him."
KJV - 2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
NRSV - 2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.
TEV - "More of Solomon's Proverbs" - 1 Praise for a fool is out of place, like snow in summer or rain at harvest time. 2 Curses cannot hurt you unless you deserve them. They are like birds that fly by and never light. 3 You have to whip a horse, you have to bridle a donkey, and you have to beat a fool. 4 If you answer a silly question, you are just as silly as the person who asked it. 5 Give a silly answer to a silly question, and the one who asked it will realize that he's not as smart as he thinks. 6 If you let a fool deliver a message, you might as well cut off your own feet; you are asking for trouble. 7 A fool can use a proverb about as well as a crippled man can use his legs.
KJV - 22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
NRSV - 22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 20 A good man's words are like pure silver; a wicked man's ideas are worthless. 21 A good man's words will benefit many people, but you can kill yourself with stupidity. 22 It is the LORD's blessing that makes you wealthy. Hard work can make you no richer. 23 It is foolish to enjoy doing wrong. Intelligent people take pleasure in wisdom. 24 The righteous get what they want, but the wicked will get what they fear most. 25 Storms come, and the wicked are blown away, but honest people are always safe.
<B13> Romans 5 - [To use other Bible research tools to further explore this citation - click here]
KJV - 19 …as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
NRSV - 19 ...just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.
TEV - "Adam and Christ" - 18 So then, as the one sin condemned all mankind, in the same way the one righteous act sets all mankind free and gives them life. 19 And just as all people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way they will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man. 20 Law was introduced in order to increase wrongdoing; but where sin increased, God's grace increased much more. 21 So then, just as sin ruled by means of death, so also God's grace rules by means of righteousness, leading us to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
20 the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised. 21 For just as death came by means of a man, in the same way the rising from death comes by means of a man. 22 For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ... 56 Death gets its power to hurt from sin, and sin gets its power from the Law. 57 But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
KJV - 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners;…
NRSV - 15 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners...
TEV - "Gratitude for God's Mercy" - 15 This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I am the worst of them, 16 but God was merciful to me in order that Christ Jesus might show his full patience in dealing with me, the worst of sinners, as an example for all those who would later believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God -- to him be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen.
KJV - 1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
NRSV - 1 And after getting into a boat he crossed the sea and came to his own town. 2 And just then some people were carrying a paralyzed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." 3 Then some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 4 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, "Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, "Stand up and walk'? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" -- he then said to the paralytic -- "Stand up, take your bed and go to your home." 7 And he stood up and went to his home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings.
TEV - "Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man" - 1 Jesus got into the boat and went back across the lake to his own town, 2 where some people brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the paralyzed man, "Courage, my son! Your sins are forgiven." 3 Then some teachers of the Law said to themselves, "This man is speaking blasphemy!" 4 Jesus perceived what they were thinking, and so he said, "Why are you thinking such evil things? 5 Is it easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, "Get up and walk'? 6 I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man, "Get up, pick up your bed, and go home!" 7 The man got up and went home. 8 When the people saw it, they were afraid, and praised God for giving such authority to men.

NRSV - 11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
TEV - "Confession and Forgiveness" - 8 The LORD says, "I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you. 9 Don't be stupid like a horse or a mule, which must be controlled with a bit and bridle to make it submit." 10 The wicked will have to suffer, but those who trust in the LORD are protected by his constant love. 11 You that are righteous, be glad and rejoice because of what the LORD has done. You that obey him, shout for joy!
KJV - 1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. 10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 Having the glory of God:…
NRSV - 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10 And in the spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It has the glory of God...
TEV - "The New Heaven and the New Earth" - 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and the sea vanished. 2 And I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared and ready, like a bride dressed to meet her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice speaking from the throne: "Now God's home is with mankind! He will live with them, and they shall be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God. 4 He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more grief or crying or pain. The old things have disappeared."
"The New Jerusalem" - 9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came to me and said, "Come, and I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10 The Spirit took control of me, and the angel carried me to the top of a very high mountain. He showed me Jerusalem, the Holy City, coming down out of heaven from God 11 and shining with the glory of God. The city shone like a precious stone, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates and with twelve angels in charge of the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of the people of Israel. 13 There were three gates on each side: three on the east, three on the south, three on the north, and three on the west.
KJV - 1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse:…
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
NRSV - 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river, is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing accursed will be found there any more...
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.
TEV - "The New Jerusalem" - 1 The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 and flowing down the middle of the city's street. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month; and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing that is under God's curse will be found in the city. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no more night, and they will not need lamps or sunlight, because the Lord God will be their light, and they will rule as kings forever and ever.
"The Coming of Jesus" - 12 "Listen!" says Jesus. "I am coming soon! I will bring my rewards with me, to give to each one according to what he has done. 13 I am the first and the last, the beginning and the end." 14 Happy are those who wash their robes clean and so have the right to eat the fruit from the tree of life and to go through the gates into the city. 15 But outside the city are the perverts and those who practice magic, the immoral and the murderers, those who worship idols and those who are liars both in words and deeds. 16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to announce these things to you in the churches. I am descended from the family of David; I am the bright morning star."
